I have a problem with someone writing words over a Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards groove and claiming to be the 2nd coming.

1. I prefer real music by real musicians.

Actually, even though I've been a hip-hop head for over 20 years, I do too.

2. The image that has been spun by Clear Channel is more damaging than the genre itself could ever hope to be. Still, you have to look at the whole genre and not just what's done in America to understand how deep the rabbit hole really goes. Hip-hop is bigger than most people think it is.

I understand that, but you know as well as I do that the "Clear Channel" image is what passes for hip-hop. You have to go to Dilla and Doom, to Madlib and Guilty Simpson, to Black Milk, and yes, to the wise men of the game, PE, De La, Common, and others. Fortunately, true "organic" if you will hip-hop acts are getting more widespread recognition, Common and Mos being prime examples.

But again, the problem is HiT-PoP, which has so overwhelmed the game that true hip-hop is hidden in the margins.

I hate that whole gangster glorification, too although nowadays that mess is pretty much dead in the water. We are back into the "Fluff Daddy" phase of hip-hop with artists like Young Cheesy and Sold-yer Boy where a lot of the hip-hop is mindless dance music. Gangster rap was neutralized via Clear Channel when enough execs children started listening to it. Then it became a problem.

Funny, and true. The worst aspects of East Coast Bling and West/South Coast Gangsta have merged, and it ain't pretty.

Why are these beatmakers in rap called producers? They aren't producers. They make beats. They can't do what guys like Rick Rubin, Quincy Jones and George Martin (to name a few) can do.

Why? Semantics.
The term "producer" has such a wide definition that someone with no musical talent at all like Sean Fluffy Combs can call himself a producer. He can't even do what Kanye does. He just hires people. That, however is also part of producing. Combs is more of a "music supervisor" than anything else but since he's doing music and not music for movies, he gets to utilize the buzzword of producer. That's all "producer" is these days - a buzzword. Its just a crafty way for people with more money than talent to confuse the masses and make them believe that they are doing more than they actually are.

F*CK KANYE

The industry is falling, and it's taking trash like Kanye with it.

Watch all his "hardcore fans" disappear when he doesn't have the industry push.

c, i love ya baby but seriously? kanye's music does not hold up to repeat listening at all.

I totally agree with this. Look, I brought his first 2 CD and Kayne is talented but his music doesn't excite me at all and I haven't listened to those CD's since the time that I brought them and that's why I haven't brought his current one. Plus, his attitude sucks.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Exactly. The phrase "don't hate the player, hate the game" comes to mind. People always seem to blame the artists for doing what they do when the blame should in fact go to the very people feeding the public bullshit. Record labels who hire accountants and marketing experts for A&R reps. Its the people who know the least about music who are making all of the decisions regarding who stays and who goes at record labels. Its all business. You got a few older cats like Clive Davis who actually care about the music and the artists they push but most of the industry is full of sharks - literally. Attorneys who don't know shit about music but they know how to hire people to make a business run, even if its on pins and needles. The problem is that the MUSIC has been bred out of the music business. Sometimes I wonder if taking music out of the schools wasn't the record industry's doing in order to pump people full of this wack shit they sell nowadays and pass off as music. Its hard to know what music is if there's no one to teach you.
It still comes down to the heads in charge and is not the fault of the artists themselves. Swizz Beats would do what he does regardless. So would Kanye, Pharrell and Timbaland. It just so happens that they did enough work to work their way into the industry and when they industry played itself, they HAD to buy from somebody or change the way the game goes. Its cheaper to pay somebody than somebodies.
