Super Bowl XLII Halftime Show - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: any thoughts?

So who watched the Super Bowl halftime show? No disrespect to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who are some of the most solid rock performers in history, but if there was any halftime show in dire need of a bunch of large breasted bimbos running up on stage and taking off their tops and licking each other's breasts while a giant inflatable penis rises out of the background, this was it. The performance was solid but didn't translate well at all in a stadium setting. It just seemed really blah. bored sigh zzz

i only caught half of it but i enjoyed it better than the superbowl last year nod that was a pure snooze fest
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

i like Tom a lot, and I enjoyed the performance quite a bit, but when I heard that he was going to be the Halftime Show this year, I expected this. Tom's not a showman, never has been, never will be. He's a songwriter. And as such, you tend to need more of a showman to take over.

Having said that, who's left? Short of getting Led Zeppelin or Lenny Kravitz I can't think of anyone else who would have put on a really great SB Halftime show.

The performance is gonna catch alot of heat here I'm sure...but I thought it was good...Tom's a great songwriter and decent musician....the only difference between this year and last year was a lack of rain...both shows were simply two great artists performing songs...like I said in the other thread; to most non-Prince fans, last years half-time show was just another musician playing music...Tom's performance certainly had the crowd singing along...

I loved it. Since it lacked "funk" I expect many here won't like it.

Nothing, except maybe MJ coulda touched Prince last year.
That being said, I bet it was good. Tom Petty talked about how hard he practiced for it, earlier in the day.

That being said, I love Paula's pre show performance. Lip synced or not. She looks hot and her new track is amazing. Sorry for taking it off topic.

I wonder if there will be any people writing complaint letters to the FCC. That moving lit up guitar thingy at the beginning of Tom's performance looked phallic to me.

Is it just me or did Tom's performance seem longer than Prince's set? I'm sure they were the same duration, but while watching Tom's set, it just seemed longer to me.

It actually was shorter I think. It just seemed so long because it was boring. Good performances, though.

I was bored by it. Tom Petty is good and I liked some of the songs, but it just didn't grab and hold my attention. I spent half the show talking to my grandfather.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

You know, I found the sequence of his set to be a bit odd. He had the crowd singing along with "Free Fallin" and I thought that was going to be the finale. It might have been a better performance overall if he had changed the set list sequence and ended with the crowd participation instead of going on to another song.

Well, after Nipplegate, the NFL panicked and went looking for older acts that appeal mainly to baby boomers. I can understand why they don't want to book Soulja Boy and Lil' Mama for the halftime show, but this event needs something that is the right balance of musical experience and titilating pizazz that will appeal to younger audiences. Since they won't book any acts that will have porn stars rip off their tops and lick on each others' breasts, why don't they do the next best thing next year and book someone with real talent but will also have people drooling over their looks. Someone like.....Mariah Carey.

No...KISS

Lots of kids like KISS and of course the older crowd likes them.

They would be a hell of a lot better than Prince.

The live show would be incredible.

Tom was good and the band ws tight, im not a huge Petty fan but the guy is always on. I was one of the few that wasnt blown away by Prince's performance last year at all, mainly because i have seen him so much live in smaller venues, his performance was good by far from groundshaking like people were calling it, plus his band was OFF big time. Im just glad the show was live, im tired of hearing "records" during these half time shows. Mariah would be an interesting choice but she would need to do it "live" and not with tons of fill ins and clip tracks that she uses of pre-recording vocals.
