Fergie talks about recording "Beat it" "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Can all these wack pop stars just leave Michael Jackson's catalog alone? "Put down the MJ record and walk away slowly!"

Even though I don't care much for "Beat It 2008," props to Fergie for being a go-getter with regards to getting herself on Thriller 25. And if Michael liked it, which he apparently did, that matters for something to me.
Thank you for sharing this interview. Shocked there isn't a video interview of her somewhere talking about it, with all the Thriller 25 MySpace TV promo going on. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

Michael liked it, and Thriller was his baby, so as much as I agree with you, I'm gonna keep quiet about it. If it was good enough for him, I'll keep to myself. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

Yeah its a very line to walk between "artistic" and "cashing in" and just trying to be relevant to an audience that might not know you.
I still feel that missed the boat big time on this project, not because of Akon and Fergie and those remixes. But for the whole nostalgia of the album. I mean its the biggest album of all time, it influenced many, and for its anniversary all you can pull out is a demo and some remixes? Now for someone like Prince this would not shock me, he is not really gonna re-issue anything for anniversary purposes, though "Purple Rain" the dvd did get a re-issue, musically Prince didnt give us the "purple rain" ablum the way it originally was, a double record, but i was glad that he didnt give us, "Lets Go Crazy" featuring Akon. [Edited 2/7/08 9:56am] The more pertinent point is that Michael is a fucking liar! Michael did not select these artists because he likes them. He selected them because he wants to reach the kids and show how relevant he is. Therefore, no matter how badly they fucked up, Michael would say nice things about them. Haven't people figured out how phony he is yet? Check out The Home Movies program. He tells his colleagues privately how much he hates touring, then he faces the camera with a look of total sincerity and says "I love touring". Even his employees laughed because he was so shamelessly lying. If they hadn't laughed, he would have carried on lying and the fans would have believed it. Michael obviously included that in the program because he thought it was funny, but it actually revealed a lot more than he realised. [Edited 2/7/08 10:20am] I wouldn't say because he made a joke, he is phony. I am really quick to reserve judgements about Michael, simply because I remember back in 2004, everyone was saying the worst about Michael. (And I mean down-right shitty..) and people took it as truth. Fast forward to a year later, Michael was vindicated and a lot of those people were shown to have been lying to cash in. I'm not saying it isn't possible that Michael isn't SOMETIMES phony, however, I don't think it is fair to label him phony because of that. That being said, yes this was a more commercial venture. However, if it reaches the kids and reminds them why he matters, so be it. It isn't like people should be resentful for Michael doing things this way. Him doing this sort of thing dates back to like "The Legend Continues" VHS. Anyone remember that? Tons of people, who mattered back then, praising him. He also did the same thing with "The One" back in like 2003/04. He figures by sending these programs (and now anniversary albums) with people who matter to the kids, he will expand his audience. To some degree, I suppose it is true. I don't think him being business minding and wanting his audience to grow makes him phony. It just makes him crude, which probably had to something to do with why THRILLER IS THE BIGGEST SELLING ALBUM IN THE FIRST PLACE. It wasn't about, because it was the most fabulous artistically amazing thing he did. (Dangerous or HIStory take those prizes.) It is because, he was in touch with marketing and business. He was the first to make important music videos. As Q said recently, "Michael and MTV road each other to glory!" Thriller was about business back then and what better way to honor that, then by making it about business once again? MJ Fan 1992-Forever

Way too much twisted bullshit in here for me to waste time with it, so I'll just focus on the first sentence in bold there. Watch the clip again. Michael did not make a joke. One of his employees said that he should try and sound less negative about touring, and he said to them "Okay, but you all know the truth. I hate touring". Then he faced the camera and did what his advisor had suggested, but rather than just sound less negative, he went straight into his insincere "love, love, love" mode. Everyone in the room cracked up because it was so patently false. It just shows how phony Michael's warm and cosy platitudes are, which is why you would have to be NAIVE AS HELL to believe he really likes Fergie's rendition of "Beat It". “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Sure in this clip he lied, but in various interviews he has expressed his dislike of touring. And fans know that. That's not the point. The point is in the clip he had that totally sincere tone of voice at the same time as he was lying through his teeth. That tells you something about his character. He could have just moderated his tone a bit to be less negative, but instead he went totally over the top and started gushing about how he "loves" touring. That shows you how capable he is of faking these warm and cosy statements. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”
