Re-Newed Edition... (sigh)

New Edition Reunites for Album, Tour
Mon Oct 21, 7:22 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - New Edition, the first group to popularize the fusion of pop, R&B and hip-hop known as "New Jack Swing" plans to release its first album in seven years early next year, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy record label announced on Monday.

The group parted ways in 1987, but reunited to put out the 1996 album "Home Again," which made it to Number 1 on the R&B charts.

The group's smooth falsetto sound spawned hits like "Candy Girl," "Mr. Telephone Man" and "Cool It Now" and established them as the kings of black bubblegum rock in the 1980s.

Their stratospheric success, especially among teen-age girls, prompted music studios to try to replicate them with clones like the Backstreet Boys, Boyz II Men and New Kids on the Block.

The reconstituted New Edition, minus Bobby Brown, plans a 2003 tour, album and a bio-pic to celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Candy Girl," the 1983 hit that made stars of the boys from the Boston projects who began singing together for pocket money. The record for Combs was expected to be out in next spring. Further details were not disclosed.

The members of New Edition -- Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant -- sold a combined 31 million albums as soloists and bandmates and laid the foundation for the musical style called "New Jack Swing."

Minus Bobby Brown? As if he has plans 2 do something? What he's busy? I'm sure that will change by the time they hit the studio... sigh

But really, wasn't New Edition a clone of the Jackson 5?

Bobby should sign on. He's got nothing better to do.

I loved "Can You Stand the Rain" and "If It Isn't Love".

I don't understand why New Edition is'nt getting their props for blazing the trail for these other pop tart acts you see today. I hope they come back with a vengance. I hope they take these pop guys out today to school.

"Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike... If I like a girl, who cares who you like... Cool It Now"

I remember that shit... they were hot. U can bet that with P.Diddy producing, they will not sound like the New Edition u grew up listening 2... they'll sound like all the other shit that's being sampled, looped, rapped over and over-synthesized (sp?).

Still, it'd b nice 2 hear what they could come up with sans Jam&Lewis or Ray Parker, Jr.

We'll see, I do enjoy Ralph's voice.

What's next, Bell Biv Devoe's "BBD Part III"??

I saw their tour in Chicago in July. Mike Bivins said that Bobby would definately be a part of the reunion. I guess this was wishful thinking. He also said that it would not happen if Bobby did not participate.

Kinda like a Jacksons reunion without Jermaine, right? (which was actually the case, but at the last minute Jermaine stepped in).

New Edition was my first concert. Gosh, I loved their songs. I remember getting the 12' of "Crucial" for a friend's birthday. Wore that song out. I wanted to marry Ricky Bell lol They don't get enough props for their influence as an 80's R&B group. It's almost as if after the Jackson 5 it skipped to New Kids on the Block. I don't care if Bobby comes back in a way cuz he messed up the last reunion. He felt that he could make more money as a soloist, and could care less. King of R&B my foot.

Essence

P.Diddy produced two cuts from NE's last album (Home Again) anyways, so no real surprise.

Was mostly produced by Jam & Lewis with Jermaine Dupri contributions too, not a very inspired LP.

I Like there Greatest Hits&Whatnot.the Interesting thing about New Edtion for Me on a whole is that they had that Saturday Night Live thing&NWA thing going on:Meaning they had so many Acts Spin Off with Success&Careers.Bobby Brown,Ralph,BBD,Johnny Gill all had Good Runs.not even the Mighty Jackson Family had all that.so from the Spring-Off Perspective they set a Mark for all Group Acts that Followed them IMHO.Boyz11Men took there Name from one of there Songs.New Edtion though is at best a Decent Singles Act.but because of all of the Spin-Off Acts they should get Props for that Alone.as for Working with Puffy:well Puffy used "Candy Girl" on a Mase Song a few Years back.Maurice Starr who Discovered New Edtion once said after New Edtion left Him that He would go get 5 White Boys&Blow them up&He did with New Kids on The Block.that is the Pipeline back too New Edtion that you see through N-Synch,BackStreet,Boyz11Men,Etc...New Edtion is still trying too Cash in as a Group on It which is Something for the strangest of Reasons they haven't been able too do.folks like Hearing there name but Buy them more in Spin off Mode.
