The Greatest Record Store in NYC....

Record Runner! They are the best especially if you like any of the following.

Kylie
Janet
Duran Duran
a-Ha
Queen
Rem
Britney
Kim Wilde
Taylor Dayne
Morrissey
Depeche
Cure
Madonna
Roxette
Crowded House

Well theres too much to list so check them out

I've been going there for almost 20 years now and they have never changed, if you want it, they can get it somehow, may take time and money but if you want some rare vinyl, rare vhs, rare cdsingle whatever...they specialize in imports, so dont wonder in there asking for the new Soulja Boy. They are possibly the smallest store ever, located on 7 jones street in NYC, for those of you who dont know that street, its the infamous street from this Bob Dylan Album cover

They are the best when looking for anything like that, or when artists put out there singles in other countries they have the import that day. I havent been there in 6 months which is the longest i have gone without going there, but with alot of releases coming up and singles and stuff, thats where im always guaranteed my stuff.

Do you remember a record store in the West Village near that Chess store, the Chess Forum on Thompson Street? That used to be a great place for bootlegs. I miss that store. Can't recall the name as they've been closed for years.

Second Coming Records? I used to get alot of stuff from their, and then theres Generation Records which is still open. There used to be Revolver Records on 8th street, but they also closed and had concert bootlegs and stuff like that

Yeah, Second Coming! I was so sad when they closed. I gotta check out Generation. Weird how you can walk through NYC and not see any record/music stores. If a musical emergency should occur, I don't want to shop in Barnes & Nobles (for something they probably won't have anyway)! evil

Yeah once i left music retail i was sad mainly because of the fact that i didnt get my 40% discount anymore, but i was still hitting the city with Record Runner and Tower also for new releases and imports sometimes, but than Tower closed and that was really a sad day. Thank god for Record Runner because of their imports and things like that, alot of times i would go their for new releases the Friday before street date and they would have them early. Also another store that is pretty good, similar to Record Runner is Rebel Rebel on Bleecker street.

I used to love all those shops when I lived in NYC...the West Village was (and for the most part, still is) such a great place for wrecka stow shopping!

I'm also a big fan of Other Music, too. I always discover some new obscure weird music when I dig around there.

Sometimes I forget about the smaller shops since I'm not in NYC anymore. I used to run to Discorama alot out of convenience for some of the more popular stuff. I think there's only 2 out of the 3 left now.

For the smaller shops like Record Runner i dont know how he does it, since everything music wise is closing. But he has a loyal base, plus HUGE online sales from customers, back in the late 90's Billboard did an article on Record Runner about them toppint a million dollars in sales, which is amazing considering their size and the fact that they dont specialize in top 40 stuff for the most part. To me that shows that markets for things like Vinyl and Singles and Music Vhs/dvds are there, and alot of these groups that people didnt even think existed anymore have no trouble selling in stores like these.

Revolver was my store.. Guy named Ray used to work there always had a military hat on. Great dude hooked me up with tons of Prince bootlegs.

I miss that place...

Damn, that was several years ago.

I haven't been to Record Runner in a very long time. The owner hooked me up with a Malice Mizer album when he went to Japan. This was a very long time ago before those albums were easy to find on the internet.

Yeah John from Record Runner is super cool, everytime im in there, he knows if theres something that i would like he says "oh this came in, and this came in" this is why im always gonna respect what a "true" record store is, because when places like these go away, its really over.

Small world!@ I can't believe you know him. I think his brother was a good guitar player from what he spoke about him. But yes, that is a guy who if I ever hit lotto I would make sure he got a nice surprise check because he was that nice and cool. I spent a fortune there. the boots were $20 a cd, and I have about 75 cd's from there.

yeah me too, thats where my prince collection of vhs/dvd and cds came from. But Ray was a really good guy, and cracked me up. There was a girl at one time that worked there and i dont remember her name, she had long hair, but i do remember one day her and Ray got into an argument over something and it was so funny because they were cursing each other out while the store was packed with customers, hilarious shit.

I doubt it's still around, but back in the day, there was a great record store in the Village(I think) called Downstairs Records. It had all kinds of rare sh!t. That's where I got the Black Album and other Prince bootlegs.

all the cool record stores are dropping like flies. disbelief

i think there will always be a few around because of the specialty music fans and collectors who can't get what they want from purchasing downloads online, but still...it'll never be as fun as it was when you could hit up like 5 or 6 wrecka stows in one day. sigh
