you kiddin' ain't you?

None of these are rare and are easily available in the current SLY catalog. If you don't already have this stuff I guess it's cool, but a pimp-playa like you should know when he's being out-pimped!

BTW I found a true rarity a 2 disc compilation of SLY's TV and other LIVE performances. It's an unauthorized bootleg with some bad soundmixes, but it' s the kind of thing I had to have teh moment I saw it.

I'll post some details later tonight...

This sounds like a cool compilation for the casual fan,but how come there isn't a multi-disc box set containing rare tracks, live recordings, previously unreleased outtakes, and other goodies? That's what I'm waiting for.

Is it just me or does it seem like there are more greatest hits collections this year then usual? Lots of greatest hits from groups that already have a couple of greatest hits collections released. Aerosmith, Sting & the Police, Elvis, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, etc. How many greatest hits collections can you want?

You are dead on the money; which is exactly what i alluded to yesterday. These numerous compilatins are pure gravy for the labels VEry cheap toproduce since teh already own the rights. They make money and merely pay the artist a diminished royalties. Consumers are being pimped and unless the artist throws together a quick "HEY REMEMBER ME!" tour, he misses out on a golden opportunity.

Easy Money but the Industry has so Much Dead Weight that they are trying too Pimp down People's throats&truth be told not many people are being Reeled In with this Crap that is coming out so they gotta go for a sure Hit.but do you think Justin Timberlake,Nelly,Brittney,etc.. are gonna have 20 Greatest Hits Compilations just sitting around? No I don't think so.

But you gotta remember that all the "old" greatest hits albums usually get discontinued and younger, new fans buy these. My 13 yr old cousin bought her first Rolling Stomes album this week, 40 Licks. She never really thought about buying the other hits Stone albums, so I think it is mainly for new fans and collectors.

shrug
Being in So Calif spoils ya.
I guess I ain't too sympathetic to
folks trying to find stuff I see
in used bins all the time.

Still, the pimping continues... pimp2
Labels try to hook us oldheads in with
essays, photos, a "rare" track (that usually
deserved to be left off) or even hi bit
remastering.

THEE THESAURUS OF FUNKASAURUS by SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE is from BIG 'FRO DISCS in 2001. It was only intended for licensed broadcasts, but I found this at AMOEBA recods in LA for $14.95. IT is a 2 disc collection of Sly's TV perfomances dating from 1968 to 1983. Sound quality ranges from poor (muffled and back ground noise) to quite good. Included in the inlay trays are B&W pics of Sly at Madison Garden 1973 on guitar and keyboard (one pic has an enthusiastic Larry Graham looking on). The final production of the set is professional with high quality materials; not quite the reult of a hobbyist, but a well-heeled bootlegger. They're offshore; Europe or Japan.

Here's the breakdown:

DISC1

  • Life, Dance To The Music/Music Lover
    Kraft Music Hall 1968
  • M'Lady/Music Lover
    NBC Summer Showcase 1968
  • M'Lady
    Fillmore East 1968
  • Love City
    Ed Sullivan Show 1969
  • EveryDay People
    Leslie Uggams 1969
  • EveryDay People/Dance To The Music,Hot Fun In The Summertime/Don't CAll Me Nigger, Whitey/I Want To Take
    You Higher
    The Music Scene OCt 1969
  • Thank You, I Want To Take You Higher plus Interview before and after
    Dick Cavett Show 1970
  • M'Lady, Sing A Simple Song, Stand, Dance To The Music
Kasteel Groenveld, AMsterdam Sept 10, 1970

DISC2

  • You're The One, Stand
    Don Kirschner's Rock Concert 1973

This is great. I taped the portion of the Woodstock movie years ago when the movie was simulcast on a local public radio station. I lost the tape and was wondering why the one of the greatest bands ever never put out any live recordings.

this is only the beginning!! Sony has remastered in 24-bit sound. The double is part one, an extensive website is being built at slystone.com with rare radio footage (sly the DJ!!!) and the full catalog will be reissued through 2003 (no word on bonus tracks, but they are claiming Sly is helping... in what way, they are not saying)

All Sly's Epic work had been re-released with bonus tracks already. Bar of course his classic trio of "Stand", "Riot" and "Fresh". Hopefully these three finally get the treatment they're due.
