Grammy News: Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse & More! GRAMMY UPDATE Preparation for the Grammy awards have kicked into high gear, as the show is scheduled to air this Sunday. Word on the street is that Michael Jackson might actually show his, um, face. Who else will be there? The Grammys are this weekend! Yay! According to the NY Daily News, Michael Jackson will be in attendance to celebrate Thriller's 25th anniversary -- but he won't be performing. The paper says that the producers of the awards show wanted MJ to dance and sing, along with other big names who have joined Michael on some of his biggest hits, but the Glove One declined. "Michael can't go along with that," says a source. "He needs more time to rehearse new versions of the songs. And everything requires new choreography." The medley would have been awesome, with huge names performing old classics like, Will.i.am doing "The Girl Is Mine", Fergie singing on "Beat It", and possibly Kanye West helping out on "Billie Jean" and Akon on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'". Now, they are saying that Michael is just going to appear on stage, to show the world what a freak show he looks like now. What a bummer. In other Grammy news, it seems that Amy Winehouse is trying to making it to the show, as she stepped out of rehab yesterday, in attempt to get her Visa. "Amy was accompanied by a nurse as the appointment was under supervision," said her rep She has not left rehab and remains under the care of the clinic." He also added that there has been "no decision" made on whether or not Amy will actually be in attendance at Sunday's show. Source. He had all the time in the world to come up with new choreography for those tracks. If others perform his songs and not him, it gives the world a reason to say he's done, just like what happened at the WMA's when Chris Brown performed Thriller and MJ didn't do shit aside from that attempt at We Are the World
People will not take him as an individual seriously when it comes to music until his attitude changes. I'm not going to fathom another "he's been in it for 40 years, he can do what he wants" lecture either. If he wants to come back, he's going to have to do more than showing his face, and accepting yet another gold star for showing up. [Edited 2/5/08 12:09pm]

MJ is a legend, he's achieved everything, he's won every award, he physically cannot achieve anything else in music. He's been around for 40 years give the guy a break and let him bask in his success. Thats what this is about, its not about a Comeback, its about appreciating what he has achieved and exposing his achievements to the new generation.

Edit: Not you...^ I mean Alphastreet is right!
Yes, you're 100% right... just had a huge argument about this on a MJ board! And they gave me the exact "he's been in it for 40 years, he can do what he wants" lecture! Sometimes MJ fans (and MJ) are so goddamn annoying! [Edited 2/5/08 12:26pm]

Sorry, but I really don’t want to hear anyone else singing songs from Thriller while Michael pats his foot and nods his head in the audience. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

[Edited 2/5/08 12:09pm] i agree. i think it's lame that he's not performing his own songs. i don't want to see fergie up there doing jacko's songs as much as i actually like her. jacko is so ferice that he would probably only need 2 rehearsals in order to perform.

did anyone really think he WOULD perform to promote a 25 y.o album. He rarely does tv to promote even new material

The grammys are shaping up to be a nightmare this year and its REALLY going to expose todays hitmakers as really bad performers. Also the fact that they are dragging Whinehouse out for this show is a joke, what was she in rehab for 9 days, gimme a break, there are people nominated for awards this year that didnt even get invited. And these duets are going to be a nightmare and we know it, Tina and Beyonce, the Time and Rihanna?? My predictions are that niether Tina or the Time will have much airtime, they will be snuck out in the middle of the performance with a "cheesy" voice over. Yes yes, I know this is how it is with mj, but you're quoting him from Moonwalk, but guess what, times have changed, and if he wants to be favoured by the public, he will have to perform, or he can just retire. I won't even bother commenting on this at mj boards, cause I know what kind of answers I'll get, I've known for the past 10 years what kind of answers there will be. [Edited 2/5/08 14:25pm]

I love Michael Jackson music. He is one of my favorite popular musicians and entertainers. I think he is brilliant. However, he does not deserve to perform on the biggest music awards show. Is he even nominated? Moreover, it would be stupid shit for him to perform with fucking will.i.am, Akon, or Fergie. I can understand Beyonce and Tina Turner, but come on! MJ and Akon? MJ and Fergie?

wow so they have basically managed to make a whole article out of the fact michael jackson may turn up but wont perform when all it requires is one sentence
michael rarely performs and the idea of him performing at the grammys is silly he has nothing new to promote only thriller25 and people would only compare it to the 25th grammys when he performed billie jean so i can see no reason for him to perform i think the problem is people are getting desperate to see him do something and he just doesnt seem to care will be intresting to see whether amy winehouse will be given a visa or not With Love there is no Death

I'm not that thrilled at the thought either, but he DOES have an album to promote after all, he should be involved somehow and be able to make it work [Edited 2/5/08 14:30pm]

I think he and the brothers did some kind of performance of sorts sometime in '73. They sung songs that nominees were putting out on Record of the Year or Pop Vocal if I'm not mistaken.

I was just thinking the exact same thing. The magic is in seeing legendary performers do a bit of what we remember them for in the first place. There's so much overkill of young performers covering classics during these honor tributes, I'm fatigued from watching them. Sadly, all I ever really get out of it is realizing that many of these young folks are pretty bad at doing covers, and if I wanted to see good covers singers I'd be better off checking out local folks doing gigs up the street

If anyone expected Mike to perform. You're kidding yourselves. In his prime he rarely performed. That's how he creates hype, excitement, by rarely performing and appearing public. The rarer his appearances are the more excitement there is if he actually doe make an appearance. It's an old trick. He always does it. He was seen by the public once or twice during the Thriller years. He's very reclusive. That's his thing. That's what he thinks works for him. So don't upset if he doesn't perform at every possible opportunity. Who do you think he is? Prince?

Exactly, and at this rate, it seems the Thriller tribute will go down, with or without his performance. So he will show up, to get his award, but anyone expecting him to perform shouldn't hold their breath. Besides, word on the street is, he is saving his "performance" for his very own Thriller TV special or live performances. Where he can make some money off it. Way to go Mike! MJ Fan 1992-Forever

It is a shame about Amy's situation. From what I've heard, she is a mess.
I'm just now really starting to dig the song "Rehab" ironically. Call me late. Oh well. I remember hearing it back in July 2007 and liking it. However, I soon forgot about it. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

Too bad MJ doesn't perform, and I hope Amy goes back to rehab (maybe she should forget about performing - there are more important things than performing).

The current commercial for the Grammys shows the MJ Tribute and says who its featuring, and one NEW tribute is a Sgt Pepper performance for the Beatles, i know im going to vomit at this, i can only imagine what BAD acts are gonna be in this. And if Paul and Ringo arent involved in it, its useless "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F
