Wannabees

Back in the day I felt that Jack (I Go Wild), Giorgio (Sex Appeal), and even The Deal (remember Baby Face then?) where either rocking his Controversy hairstyle (The Deal), or singing suggestive lyrics (Jack & Giorgio).

Can you think of any? Past or present?

(Forgive me if this topic has come up before, but I'm a newbie.)

Don't forget these Prince wannabees...

***Ready For The World---Their first two albums borrowed HEAVILY from the Minneapolis Sound.I like their songs, but let's be honest, these guys never had an original sound or style.

***Dreamboy---I have their first album (containing the hits "Don't Go" and "Walk The Streets") and it all sounds like lame outtakes from the '1999' album.Their lead singer was struggling hard to hit those Princely high notes.

***Exotic Storm---If you've never heard of this band, you're not alone. They didn't have any real hits and quickly faded away after a flop debut album released in 1985.They were from Minneapolis, and their music was a blatant attempt to jump on the Prince bandwagon.

***Sexual Harassment---Their 1983 debut album contained the catchy hit "I Need A Freak".They specialized in sexually explicit lyrics straight out of the Prince songbook.Songs like "If I Gave You A Party (Would You Come)?" and "K-I-S-S-I-N-G" sound like outtakes from Prince's 1982/83 period.

Good call on Ready for the World! They should've just named the song "Oh, Sheila E"!

I forgot all about Dream Boy

I've never heard of the last two bands!

Personally, I think Rick James even had a wannabee momemt.
Remember the video for "Glow?" I was a bootleg version of "Purple Rain" James' frilly shirt and all. In addition he came up with rival versions of Prince proteges:

Process and the Doo-rags= The Time
The Mary Jane Girls= Vanity Six

I thought Rockwell was imitating just a bit.

Re: The Minneapolis sound... Am I the only one who thought that Klymaxx wanted to be the female version of The Time?

Oh, and Lusicious Dame wanted to be Vanity
