Maybe one day the official video will finally be released. "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Was there an original video? I´d love to see it too. I love the song. It´s one of MJ´s best. I love "The Kid". Chaplin was truly a genius. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Was there an original video? Yeah, Smile was to be the last single for the HIStory album and a video had been shot. Then Blood On The Dancefloor was released, and the single was cancelled. I remember Michael wasn't too happy about that decision "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

smile when your heart is breaking.... that almost sounds psychotic.. I agree, and it was a weird way to end HIStory. 80% of the record was him being direct, on edge and upfront, and that track was like something from a Disney movie. That being said, the single rakes in big bucks from fans all over. I know it is rare but I never understood the fuss or having the "Smile" LP. It was just the same version. It wasn't like he resang it, or like there was some wonderful B-Side out-take. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

If by "weird," you mean "perfect," then yes. That song is as forceful a statement as anything else on the album. "Here's all the shit that's going on with me, but in the end I'll still be smiling regardless." That's Michael in a nutshell AFAIC. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I think a better ending would have been "Stranger In Moscow." He coulda placed "Smile" following "Childhood." They both sound a like and would have followed each other nicely. On another note, "Little Susie" is one of the most chilling MJ songs..EVER. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

There is no way the album's best track deserved to be buried at the end. It's too long for that. And I have no idea what "Childhood" song you're talking about... I personally think a better ending would have been "HIStory" or "Stranger In Moscow." I'm telling you guys "Smile" woulda followed "Childhood" perfectly, then it coulda kicked into "You Are Not Alone" and the r&b vibe of "2 Bad" would blended nicely. Oh well. HIStory is still amazing, even with the non-blending order of songs. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

HIStory is still amazing, even with the non-blending order of songs. Its always the tracklist MJ gets wrong, Are you two competing to see who can be the dumbest? I don't even like History, but even I could see ending such a bitter album with a track like "Smile" was a masterstroke. It's MJ reminding himself not to lose his joy in living. Ending the album with "Stranger In Moscow" would've been the DUMBEST MOVE POSSIBLE! Thank God you're not one of his advisors. That would end the whole album on a defeatist note. As great as the song is, it would've been a downer to end the album that way. Also, what was great about ending with "Smile" was it was IRONIC. It showed Michael had not lost his sense of humour. After all that recrimination and vitriol, "Smile" was the perfect way to undercut all the seriousness and show that life must go on, even after great despair. That was the whole point. Believe me, Michael knew what he was doing when he ended the album with that song. I wouldnt be so harsh. I think sometimes - like Prince - you need to really listen harder to understand exactly what points mj is making on his songs - listen again to Blood on the Dancefloor and understand the point he is making. The History album started with Scream and ended with Smile , what does that say??
Ending with Stranger in Moscow would be the worst possible ending the album could have, and placing Smile next to Childhood would be a mess as both songs are very different sentiments.
