Tom Petty was entertaining. He wasn't Prince, but he was good. My thoughts exactly.

BORING~~~~~
Tom Petty has ALOT of great songs... but I felt the ones he sang were lousy.. (except Free fallin) His voice didn't sound all that great either and he kept breaking the show up by stopping between songs... Didn't flow well at all..... The Stage WAS very cool.... but for a 1/2 time show you need some one with some "ZIP"..... Prince has NOTHING to worry about against THIS 1/2 time show... He did AMAZING even in a down pour..

Pretty dull. And a marked contrast to last year when the halftime show was far more exciting than the game!
I like Tom, but he's not really a showman. Not surprisingly he put on a professional show with good music, performed through a stony grin. My Legacy

lastdecember said: Tom was good and the band ws tight, im not a huge Petty fan but the guy is always on. I was one of the few that wasnt blown away by Prince's performance last year at all, mainly because i have seen him so much live in smaller venues, his performance was good by far from groundshaking like people were calling it, plus his band was OFF big time. Im just glad the show was live, im tired of hearing "records" during these half time shows. Mariah would be an interesting choice but she would need to do it "live" and not with tons of fill ins and clip tracks that she uses of pre-recording vocals.
Mariah would be a boring choice if you ask me. She's never really been known for being a great live performer. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

Mariah would be a boring choice if you ask me. She's never really been known for being a great live performer. To me her best live performance was at LIVE 8 doing "Make it Happen" this had to be the only time Mariah did not use any form of clip tracks, pre-recorded vocals, or anything. Vocally she was on, though people said she was straining, to me it was like "finally you are singing". But outside of her, female wise, Beyonce is the only other one that i could see them asking. His performance was good, but not great. Now theres's question as to whether it was live.

I like Tom, but he's not really a showman. Not surprisingly he put on a professional show with good music, performed through a stony grin. Well this is why networks are always praying for a New York team in a whatever sport to make it. I remember the year the Mets lost the playoffs to the Cardinals, and the Cardinals played the Tigers in the World Series, it is now regarded as the worst played, least watched, most boring World Series ever. And i felt that way with last years superbowl with Chicago and the Colts, boring teams. I think that he was a poor choice for the half-time show.
I enjoy his music, his integrity towards his music, & I also enjoy watching him perform. But that's only because I already know what to expect from him. For the Super-Bowl, the majority of viewers don't expect a no-frills show. When I first heard that he was gonna play at this years game, I had already begun imagining how various celebrity news talk-shows would be complaining about how boring it was. Mariah would be a boring choice if you ask me. She's never really been known for being a great live performer. I LOVE Mariah, but I have to agree. She looks terribly stiff and unattached in all her live performances. love is a fate resigned memories mar my mind love it is a fate resigned Over futile odds and laughed at by the Gods and now the final frame Love is a losing game

How great can a performance be in 8 to 10 minutes?

I liked it a lot and was really looking forward to it. Tom Petty is a great.
I agree maybe he should have closed with "Free Fallin'". It's that song just about everyone knows..."Running Down A Dream" is good but hardly a closer. [Edited 2/4/08 15:02pm]

man this performance was especially and especially compared to last year. Who can beat a short black man playing an electric guitar in the rain with his hair piece laid to the side??? Not Tom Petty.
I found myself wanting to find the tape I had taped last year's Prince half time show on and popping it on the tv screen. And yes Tom Petty's set seemed way longer than Prince's performance. But that's probably due to boredom. And I thought that Sir Paul McCartney's performance was boring, shucks, I think Tom Petty should win the most boringest Super Bowl half-time performance ever award. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Prince's wasn't up to par 2 much else either. misfee said: man this performance was especially and especially compared to last year. Who can beat a short black man playing an electric guitar in the rain with his hair piece laid to the side??? Not Tom Petty.

I don't think you even need to be a big Tom Petty fan to enjoy it. I don't own a single record by him and I thought it was good. Sounds like some people didn't like it just because it wasn't Prince.
