Two of the best break-ups and re-formation of groups For me nothing is better than the split of the Bee Gees and the split of a-Ha. And than the reforming of each brought them to even better musical heights of artistry.
The Bee Gees had tons of amazing hits prior to their break-up in 1969 and lasting into 1970. Only to come back wiith two amazing songs "Lonely Days" and "How can you mend a broken heart" and of course everything that followed, i dont think that would have happend if it wasnt for that break, however short it was. It showed the Bee Gees as a group that despite changing in a time, they always needed each other. a-Ha though a one-hit wonder in this country has had tremendous success everywhere else, in the 80's they had 13 straight top 20 UK hits, but as the 80's ended they threw away the synths and that sound and totally went for a more live acoustic feel, as they began to do that in 1990, some cracks formed in the group and by 1992's "Memorial Beach" album they were sick of each other and played their last show in 1994, going their solo ways. Re-forming in 1998 a-Ha began work on possibly the best album of the 00's. "Minor earth Major Sky" released in early 2000 was huge for them, and took them into every market in Europe and South America where they are HUGE, and it continues to this day, a-Ha's change in sound was really the cause for bands like Radiohead and Coldplay and Keane. a-Ha as they have said knew when they got back together that they wanted to make "great albums" not just "great singles to gon albums" theres a big difference, and had the break up never happend they wouldnt have come back with this new level of artistry which their peers have finally given them credit for. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F | |
