Because she wanted to completely mimic Whitney's version, right down to the ridiculous high note at the end of "free" that every young dumb singer now does. biggrin

Because she is an American Idol product. Product Number 04945958

Because, she probably wouldn't have done it to the liking of 100%, which is what the the American Idol standards are making people attempt to be. Half of the fun of seeing someone live, is seeing how they change things vocal to accommodate the show. If I wanted to hear the studio version, I'd stay at home and play the CD.

I wonder how much longer it will take these clowns to figure it out.

I dont' fucking know. lol I didn't examine it that closely. I actually tuned in for the last couple lines. I'm just annoyed with every damn body having to sing "free" that way. barf

Sos - no, they don't all lip sync it, but, yes, Whitney did.

"Who are you talking to" - Whitney evillol

Yeah, she lipped too. nod Only Marvin didn't! biggrin But I don't know who really SUNG THEIRS LIVE! Gotta get credit to Mary, she performed the national anthem at some game (not the Super Bowl but it was something else) and she tried it, now people like to hate because she was "screaming" and "screeching" but that's my girl! Whitney lipped it because she had a cold that night, I think. Jordin lipped it too. But so did:

Cher
Beyonce

I think the Backstreet Boys sung it live though - acapella... I think... I watched the Super Bowl some time ago around 2001 or 2002...I think the Cheaters, er, Patriots, were playing at the time.

Someone said she did. I think even Whitney said it. I actually was shocked when I heard that the first time! Like "what, Whitney lipped it?"

IMHO, she kilt it when she performed it just minutes before her '91 HBO concert! biggrin

If I ever have to sing the National anthem,
I'm not gonna lip sync to it.
I wanna be able to improvise all the extended little doodads that are common whenever the NA is sung.

"Oh jose,
can you-uh see-eeeEEE.....
by the dawn's early, i said early, I'm talking to yuh, so ear-errly-ee nuh-iiigghht....!"

Not only does it make the performance eminate from more of an instinctual level, but also, it'll help it real when I do l that whole "Christina Aguilera moving her hand up down in accordance to the height of the note" thing.

No one lip-syncs the National Anthem at the Super Bowl.

Mariah didn't lip-sync.

The Dixie Chicks didn't lip-sync.

Billy Joel didn't lip-sync (and he work 2 Super Bowls).

Whitney went in the studio and pre-recored the National Anthem and lip-synched it at the actual show...

Aretha Franklin did it too

'Natural woman,' fake anthem?
DETROIT (AP) — Aretha Franklin's performance of the national anthem before the decisive Game 5 of the NBA Finals was pre-recorded and lip-synched, one of the Queen of Soul's producers said.

"We recorded vocals for Aretha Franklin last year at her house, in her vestibule," producer Brian Pastoria told the Detroit Free Press.

"We recorded vocals for Aretha Franklin last year at her house, in her vestibule," producer Brian Pastoria told the Detroit Free Press for a Friday story. "One of the things we recorded was the national anthem — the one that was played at the Palace on Tuesday night."

A representative for Franklin did not immediately return a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Detroit Pistons spokesman Matt Dobek, who initially asserted that Franklin sang live, said Thursday he was mistaken.

"I was unaware," he said. "She did something I did not

Orchestra may see anthem royalties

source: St. Petersburg Times, Associated Press
Date: December 18, 2001

By JOHN FLEMING

The Florida Orchestra has withdrawn its lawsuit against Arista Records over royalties from the rerelease of Whitney Houston's performance of the national anthem during Super Bowl XXV in Tampa.

"We are satisfied it will be resolved in a short period of time," said Leonard Stone, executive director of the orchestra.

The lawsuit, filed Friday, asked for enforcement of a 1991 agreement requiring the record company to pay the orchestra royalties on all sales worldwide of Houston's rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner, a patriotic hit during the Gulf War. The orchestra accompanied her performance, which caused a small flap at the time because Houston lip-synched the song at the Super Bowl. The recording was reissued after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and became a hit again, rising as high as No. 6 on the Billboard singles chart. The song had previously been rereleased in 2000 on Houston's two-CD Arista album The Greatest Hits, whose sales have topped 10-million copies.

I already knew about Aretha's performance. Artists lip-sync at NBA shows all the time.

Im sorry but if your asked to sing the freakin anthem, sing the freakin anthem, if you cant and you need a record than get someone else. Im tired of hearing excuses like "its a big time production because its the super bowl", bullshit, just sing the freaking thing or let someone else do it if you are that worried about your voice or forgetting the words. Shit Billy Joel did it live twice, Mariah did it live after her 'so called breakdown" and it was one of her first live appearances after she was called OVER by the 99% of the usa.

Not true. The production going over as planned is more important than a live performance. They all lip sync. There are 2 many things that could go wrong with a live feed. That is way they sing 2 tape.

Yes she did. From my understanding, ALL artists lipsync the National Anthem because of the acoustics on the field. Especially with a marching band and symphony. I know Whitney, Vanessa Williams, and others have all lip synced at football games.

They all lipsynch it. It's probably something that the producers ask them to do.

Well it might be some of them, because Billy Joel was live both times, without question. The others i cant speak on what the reasoning would be , i just think its bull that they can do the song live.
