Beastie Boys: Legit Act or Comedy Act?

I've always said that this group was a spoof act meant to poke fun at rap as opposed to a legit act that respected rap. I feel that it wasn't until they realized people thought they were legit that they started to take it serious and try and be a legit act.

If you notice, they ended up being more of a rock band in the end, and that's why I feel they were just fluff for the white audiences that wanted to have "fun with rap."

I think this is why their second album Paul's Boutique flopped. People weren't sure yet if they were legit.

For me, I think it was a misunderstanding. Licensed To Ill especially, but also their recordings to follow, would feature HUMOR as a major hallmark. Even their early punk rock records had a fun(ny) attitude to them.

It's like is Frank Zappa a legit act because he had humor in his music?

Even on their rap debut, Beastie Boys were legit enough for a REAL comedy act to make fun of them:

Morris Minor & The Majors "Sutter Rap"

Well, Zappa wasn't "mocking" a genre, while BB certainly did. It was like they were making fun of the Black culture (like sportin' the truck jewelry and medallions even though that was what they never about). It almost seemed buffoonery from my point of view.

It's both, they're cartoonish, to be sure, but they make good music.

Like the Chili Peppers, and our own Prince, they know they're weird, and they know they're silly at times, and they know what people think of them, but they take making music seriously.

I also think their image has become much more normal than in the 80's when they looked like a complete joke.

I disagree here, I think they took themselves seriously before most of the public did. Their second album really caught people by surprise.

I know I thought they were a spoof band, and when I listened to Paul's Boutique my attitude completely changed.

Now, I think what happened was they were shocked that people caught on to them and was giving them props so that's when I think they decided to try and go legit.

YEs, I played Zappa for my girlfriend and she was amazed. She said she always thought of him as being like Weird Al Yankovic lol

When do you think they made that change?

I don't really see a huge change other than that they're older & a bit toned down from the gold chains & Adidas.

I think this is how it went:

Rick Rubin: Yo, can you believe it! People think you guys are SERIOUS about this rap shit!

BB: What the fuck? Really?

RR: Hell yeah! So, let's try and make a more LEGIT record but still keep some of the antics.

BB: Cool!

They debuted in 1985 with "She's On It" though. How does that fit your theory?

Here's their appearance in the movie Krush Groove:

After the success of their debut album.

When Def Jam and Beastie Boys parted ways for them to record their follow up Paul's Boutique on Capitol Records without Rick Rubin? confuse

Ok, so it wasn't RR, but whoever it was handling them at that time. My little script was just for fun.
