I think we'd need the WHOLE damn quote because what she's saying is that she doesn't want to be limited to one audience or demo. That's exactly what Tina was saying and if I'm not mistaken she STILL did R&B, it was just that she added more pop-rock to her caliber whereas before, she and Ike were playing a brand of soul, R&B, blues and funk with some rock added in between there near the end.
