Scarlett Johansson album due in May! From Billboard.com:
Johansson Sets Date For Waits Covers Disc
January 24, 2008, 2:45 PM ET Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. One of the more unusual albums to be conceived in recent years, actress Scarlett Johansson's interpretations of Tom Waits songs, will hit stores this spring. "Anywhere I Lay My Head" will be released May 20 via Rhino Entertainment's Atco imprint. Johansson collaborated on the album with Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, Celebration's Sean Antanaitis and TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek, who produced. The track list sports 10 Waits covers and one original track, but full details have yet to be announced. Johansson recorded the album over five weeks last spring at Dockside Studios in Maurice, La. Her prior music dalliances include singing the track "Summertime" for "Unexpected Dreams," a 2006 charity album featuring film stars, and a surprise appearance with the Jesus & Mary Chain at last year's Coachella festival. http://www.billboard.com/...1003701662 Let the bashing begin.

This sounds pretty damn interesting. I dig Nick Zinners guitar work, and TV on the Radio have a unique sound. The only Tom Waits tune Im familiar w/ is "In the Neighborhood", which is pretty damn depressing(yay ). Is the rest of his stuff in that same hobo-esque/vaudvillian mode? Can Scarlett Johanson carry a tune? Why do I keep confusing her w/ Charlieze Thereon? So many questions. This sounds cool because of who associated with it, though. A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

At least she's not a model...

They've been working on this for a while, I'm actually happy for the kid, seeing her get a chance to diversify herself. I've already heard her do a tune or two on the odd compilation cd, she's not bad at all. I could easily see had she pursued a career as a vocalist instead of acting she very easily could have become an "it girl" in jazz.

I love her acting work, she picks the most intersting roles/movies,,,,,thats why I won't get excited over this.

You aren't excited because she's a good actress?

The fact that she chose Tom Waits songs get's her cred from the get go.
Also I heard her on SNL and she sounded ok. I am very curious about this. When was the last time an actress had a debut album with 10 songs from the obscure demented genius of Tom Waits>?? This could be really good. Music is the best...

The org is being more positive than I had predicted. I thought for sure 99% of the posts would be along the lines of:
Why the hell can't actors just stick to acting? Whenever actors make albums, they suck big time. Don Johnson? Bruce Willis? Jennifer Lopez? HORRIBLE!

That's because Scarlett is charismatic and lovely You don't have to tell me! I'll watch any sucky movie that she's in. And if Nick Zinner is involved, going by his track record, I expect the sound of the album to be very edgy--hipster-friendly alternative.

Just what we need Another actress who wants to sing.

It's quite a tall order to take on a whole covers album by someone with such a distinctive voice. Whether this turns out to be a joke or a modern classic, I gotta admit she has balls. The expected thing to do would be to hire a TImbaland type to do a variation on the Paris/Lohan concept... or worse, someone like the Moldy Peaches doing a sensitive girl folkie record with her.

Im waiting for the Hayden Panettiere CD due out in 2008. That will be this years Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus or whatever that High School Musical is.
