She was one of the first Black women that I recall going blond so she stood out. I think the person who keeps insisting that she looks like an "ugly Catwoman" is quite young and unaware of the style of the 50s with regard to hairstyles, eyebrows, makeup in general. Against the styles of today, every earlier decade looks a bit weird. She actually was considered quite attractive in her younger years. As for the original post, I don't have a problem with Beyonce in general, but I think she is a poor choice to play Etta, vocally and in appearance. I know they can do a lot with the look, but there are some others who I think could do a better job---Jill Scott or Queen Latifah come to MY mind. OOH YEA, Jill would be an excellent choice & I agree, Etta was beautiful imo...

I don't see Jill playing Etta,,,maybe Dinah Washington though but not Etta.....
They both have that snappy personality,,,,and both have the same intimacy level with their audience. Young Loretta Divine would've been an easy casting choice too...

Good Choices The more and more I think about it, Etta really is difficult to cast... There really isn't anyone that immediately springs to mind that knocks me out so much that I see "baby Etta" inside of them... ...I just know that Bouncy definitely ain't it . Since the rpeorts published all seem to point to the main storyline being about Leonard Chess and Chess Records, let's just hope that Knowles' screen time as Etta James will be limited....very limited

The thing about Beyonce is...
She got more talent hiding her feelings than showing them,,,,,which won't help her considering the fact that she'll be playing the role of a VERY fiery woman. This is a role that requires a lil' more than 2 facial expressions, which is the limit number to Beyonce's,,in public as well as in her ACTING.

Nonsense, she looks adorable. I've always thought there's something sexy about her,,,,she got THAT attitude. Etta James is a beautiful woman, very sexy with a cool attitude. She's great.

Agree with everything you said.I too feel that Beyonce won't be able to pull this off.

queen latifah would be perfect. she is making records like that time era nowadays, can pull it off and has the body structure. I couldn't see bee wanting to gain the weight needed nor the edge as someone said earlier. tina, as someone said earlier definitely, if you don't mind losing your voice from learning how to do it like tina. but not etta. even jill, I could even see erika doing dinah washington or elizabeth withers ( think that is her name). heck beyonce could do betty davis easily if she was popular enough in her day. That would be the smart choice. Enough with Beyonce already, damn. IMO, she's overrated and overexposed.

I agree! I'm SICK of Beyonce! She needs to sit her ass down for awhile!! Several years ago,J-Lo knew that she was getting overexposed,so she chilled a bit.Beyonce needs to do the same!

How the hell can that siren portray the power and energy of Ms. James? C'mon now....typical Hollywood. Beyonce's their "flava of the month".
