I hear ya! 45's have don't have visuals how true, but they do b side treats sometimes not found on lps, so yeah that is fun if we are on the same page with that. I am with ya nipsy

I think if we discuss 45s here, it would be music that was never released on albums anyway, A- and B-sides alike, so it could definetely be very interesting. But it would be quite an effort, and I wouldn't even know where to start ..

The Southside Movement was a Chicago group who had one or two hits whose breakdowns have been sampled quite a bit in hip hop. The'big' ones were I've Been Watching You and Can You Get to That? from their 1973 eponymous album. I wanted to post the cover art from that one but couldn't find it online. The photo here is from their second album in '75. (so how do you make the image appear larger?) I haven't played the '73 album more than twice since I got it 4 years ago so I can't really vouch for the sound but the cover art was classic cheap style first release stuff. Black and white grainy photo of 7 guys with big fros, platform shoes and giant collared plaid leisure suits standing in front of a tree with their arms folded in cool positions. One brother is wearing entirely different clothing; don't know if he was late to the shoot and didn't have time to stop by the cleaners or what but even though he was missing his band uniform he got to be in the pic anyway. Hilarious. Some sound clips here: http://www.cduniverse.com...+South.htm [Edited 1/29/08 10:48am]

One person mentions, its 5 orgers on this topic. Ok not many of us know about obscure funk music acts, but we know of it. Just being a fan of Prince (who incorporates a lot of funk elements into his music). So we can imagine what the music would sound like, lots of chicken scatch bass, and wah wah guitar. But its a good thread, as few of these acts probably got out of the chitlin circuit and its good to see these interesting cover sleeves. Clearly as a lot were underground or niche and the condition of a lot suggests they were well loved. Its a great topic. And here in New Zealand even a few Maori guys tried it out. One was a guitarist called Billy Te Paa who became obsessed with Jimi Hendrix, and there was a singing/funk group called the Hi Marks who covered a lot of blues, funk, soul material. There was another person who played in a group called the Kal K ulated formula and Blerta but his name escapes me (Its sad as he took his own life, his stuff was just too far out)
Although not a Maori (Jamaican I think) Eddie Lovette had funky reggaed versions of these songs 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

hi all!
this is about the b sides of 45's. I will say that I agree that it would be a crazy task to start a discussion on 45's. I can say that the funnest thing I have found on the b sides of 45's (since b sides weren't the thing to get airplay or attention but known more for their fill-in for a b side to a single on a 45) is a sample that was used by some rap artist or something like that. ex: I am listening to show and tell by al wilson. popular song--turn over out of curiosity to hear the b side and find the sample for this rapper named amg who made "bitch better have my money". Mind you I didn't see al wilson as making a song with that music since he was known for his sultryness. b sides are interesting. nipsy

Mind you I didn't see al wilson as making a song with that music since he was known for his sultryness. b sides are interesting. Agreed. It's crazy to start a discussion on 45s .. it would be opening a can of worms, because there are so many artists who have released just one 45, and sometimes only 100 copies were pressed. I have about 5,000 45s in my collection, and I know DJs who own more than that. I still bite .. these are currently on my playlist, mixed with some of my all-time favorites: Marvin Smith: You're really something, Sadie Curtis Mayfield produced groovy Soul tune on Mayfield Records. Dennis Landry: Sing my Song Heavy New Orleans Funk with a slight Disco touch. Released on the New Orleans based Soul Unlimited label. Landry only recorded two 45s, the other one is Miss Hard-to-get. 1619 B.A.B.: For your love Nice heavy Funk 2-sider on Chess with World on the B-Side (James Brown recorded that song as well). Love, Togetherness & Devotion: Success Tough to find Funk 45 on A&M Records, in the tradition of Graham Central Station, but a little dirtier. This group later shortened its name to L.T.D. Bataan: Woman don't want to love me One of my favorites at the moment. Of course this is really Joe Bataan on Salsoul Records. This track was also released on his album Afrofilipino, but the 45 was mixed differently and is a lot harder. Killer dance track. Rare Function: Disco Function Great funky Disco track on the New Orleans based Soul Unlimited label and definetely a legendary must-have. Dizzy Jones: Just as sure as you play A James-Brown-produced track on his New Breed label. Written by James Brown's band arranger at that time, Nate Jones. Sweet Charles: Hang out and hustle Another James Brown production. His former bassman Sweet Charles Sherrell recorded an album for People records in 1975, and this 45 is from same same session, but it was not released on the album. For that reason, this 45 is impossibly hard to find. The Devils: The X-Cor-Cist This is really Fred Wesley and the J.B.'s on People records. It's a crazy Funk instrumental with a toad grunting in the background and the devil screaming "I wanna do something to you, I wanna bite you!" Always shocks people on the dancefloor. The b-side is a bit milder - a cover of Booker T.'s Hip Hug Her. Barbara Stant: Shadow in your footsteps Since I live in Virginia, I collect rare Virginia Soul and Funk. Barbara Stant was a local legend, and this obscure yet beautiful 45 was released on Shiptown records out of Norfolk. Sir Guy and the Rocking Cavaliers: Funky Virginia Another Virginia track on D.P.G Records and the anthem of our local parties. Sir Guy released a few more 45s and they are all tough to find. Judson Moore: Push and Pull Simply beautiful, this song. It's pure Soul, but also works on the dancefloor. I don't really know anything about this 45, except that it was released on Capri records. Debbie Talor: Don't let it end That's what I always think - "don't let it end" - whenever I play this 45 on GWP Records. The track is that good. Calvin Arnold: Satisfy my woman A nice Soul 45 on IX Chains records. A bit on the slower side, but still good on the dancefloor. Kinda sounds like Color him father by The Winstons. Della Reese: It was a very good year Pretty popular ABC 45 in Europe at the moment. Hard to find, but when you see it, it's usually pretty cheap. There's also a live version of this track on Della's One more time album. John Zamot: You dig? Nice boogaloo dance track on Decca records. The Vibrettes: Humpty Dump A deep Funk classic on Lujon records. Some people are tired of hearing it, but I can't get enough of it. Brief Encounter: Get a good feeling A real mid-70s Funk smash on Capitol Records. Packed dancefloor guaranteed! Soul One's: Soul Pot Kinda eerie deep Funk track on Deal records from Texas. Little Tommy: Baby can't you see This Virginia Funk 45 on Sound of Soul is probably one of the rarest coming from this state. It usually goes for about $1,000 when it turns up on Ebay. Little Tommy was also a member of The Whole Darn Family who had a hit with Seven Minutes of Funk. The X-Citers Unlimited: Soul to Billie Joe Super-speedy and funky version of Ode to Billie Joe on ABC Records. I only know a few people who have it, so I don't have more info on this record. Ifyou do, please let me know. Nu-Sound Express, Ltd.: Ain't it good enough Heavy, heavy, heavy Funk 45 on Silver Dollar Records. Nuff said. The Golden Toadstools: Silly Savage Nice uptempo Boogaloo with very funny lyrics. Released on Minaret Records. Chris Jones: I'm the man People always mistake this classic Funk 45 on Goodie Train for a James Brown track. It's not. But it's equally funky. Willie Gresham and the Free Food Ticket: Step by Step Definetely one of the most original band names I have encountered so far. But this Deep Funk 45 on Majesty records is serious Funk. The Fantastic Johnny C: Hitch the Horse This cat was one of the outstanding singers on the Philadelphia based Phil-L.A. label. This track is actually a Cliff Nobles instrumental from his The Horse album and is called The Mule, but it was renamed when Johnny overdubbed on it. The horn-section on this tune later became MFSB. I can recommend some more later - if anyone cares. [Edited 1/30/08 13:30pm]

They were based out of Gainesville, Florida when I lived there in the 70s. We hung out together quite a bit. Hottest R&B/Funk band in the territory at that time. I was in a band there that eventually confiscated their guitar player. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
