But what Eddie Harris? Yeah, he made some funky albums in the '70s, but I wouldn't classify him as "unknown Funk act".

Primarily known as a Jazzer, from the late 60s through the 70s, generally assisted by Ronald Muldrow on guitar & Rufus Reid on bass Eddie Harris did release a couple of pretty funky albums.

...Is It In is another pretty good one.

Back in the day, some of his cuts got played right along side some of the artists that have been listed.
Maybe these should go into the Unknown Funky Albums category. wink

This is probably my favorite War album. "Fidel's fantasy" is trippy as hell ..

"3 fingahs and a smile...WAR! WAR! WAR!"
Of course the original version did not have that thin black border

The hit off this was "Come and Get Your Love". Really loved that chant they wove into it.

I have to admit, I always passed on Redbone .. that whole native American Funk idea seemed rather odd to me ... maybe I should give them another listen ...

Remember that BOMB I dropped on Vernon Reid at NAMM?

Ronald Muldrow (born February 2, 1949 in Chicago and died January 31, 2007 in Los Angeles) was a soul jazz and hard bop jazz guitarist.

Somehow I thought it was back in 2005.. sad

Naw; the song is really pop, but in LA all non-white bands were cool.

There is a cool Native American blues band called Indigeneous. Keep an eye out for 'em. They tour a lot in Europe.

Obviously these acts are all Known...*thats why you know them..and that why there are thousands of Lps still floating around in record shops all over the world..Thats why Magazines like Wax Poetics exist...Thats why "DIGGING" is a whole Fad..*even amongst kids that weren't born when these jams were originally released...
If I had to say somebody I would say KEVIN NANCE Badass keyboard player..(former fiance of Natalie cole) (former Kid Creole keyboadist) and The dude that played the classic synth line on the song
"There but for the grace of God go I" wink

C'mon man, us funkateers know all these albums, but the average person doesn't, not even on this site. And that is why there are only the same five people posting on this thread. Deal with it, the artists discussed on this thread are not known outside of our little subculture.

By the way, you are still wrong about "thousands" of these albums floating around. I dare you pick up an OG pressing of S.O.U.L. or Sir Joe Quarterman any day now ..

I have 1000's of albums and I have not heard of any of these groups. I may have heard the songs back in the day, but I don't recognize the names.

In my collection, a lot of these were promotional cut-outs. I grew up in LA and bought LPs at stores where employees would drop off items for cash or trade. Some were spotty in distribution and others were failed deals. Still others spawned regional hits that didn't play in all markets. Also, a number were just given to me because of personal relations.

Frankly, some of them were simply bad...outright dogs.

That's the thing. You need to be a true Funk collector or musician in order to know all these albums on this thread. While I agree with PrettyMansson that these LPs are standard among Funknuts, most of them are still pretty rare and hard to find. And you would not find too many people who own all of them.

I could have started a thread on what I think are truly unknown Funk acts, even among people from the digger scene ... acts like 1619 B.M.P., Don Campbell, Dennis Landry, Leon Gardner, The Vibrettes, Ann Alford, Marie Queenie Lyons, etc ... but this would be a pretty lonely effort on a website dedicated to a major pop star like Prince.

Lots I've not heard of before, some I have like Cymande, S.O.U.L., Queenie Lyons, Beginning Of The End. I suppose it all depends on what you are able to find in your local record pit, folks in the US should be able to find more obscure gems than I can in the UK.
Btw, for what it's worth I will add:
The 24 Carat Black - Ghetto:Misfortune's Wealth
Baby Huey & The Babysitters - The Baby Huey Story

Not sure if you could class these as unknown funk albums but they are worth investigating nevertheless.

Good choices, and yes, both albums you have mentioned are pretty rare. The OG pressings almost never go for less than $100 on Ebay. I love both albums.

That's the ironic thing ... much of what today is called Deep Funk or Northern Soul is extremely rare because it simply was bad and uninspired music and there was a good reason why only 200 to 1,000 units were pressed on small labels.

I think some of the musicians were Americans based in the Netherlands. They've done a few albums, but "Inside out" is their masterpiece.

Anyone familiar with this album:

Archie Whitewater

I only know about 3 or four people who own it (including myself), and I've never seen it since I got a copy about ten years ago. It's one of those albums I would bring on the famous lonely island with me. Amazing mix of Funk, Rock and Jazz. Cadet Concept was a great label for experiments like this at that time.

It was always believed that Archie Whitewater (not a person, by the way, just a name for the whole band) only released this one album. But a friend of mine in L.A. found the master tapes for a second album in a thrift store. It's some good stuff and it was never released, though their first album remains their best.

If any of you vinyl heads ever find it - don't sleep on it. It has never been released on CD, nor reissued on vinyl. You should buy it even if you don't like it .. it'll definetely make you some money.

Its just hard for me to say something like SHUGGIE OTIS in 2008...Maybe then I'll say..Willie Hale
