It should also be noted that the BNH were one of the first groups to promote a new genre of music that was very powerful in the Europe of the early 1990s .. ACID JAZZ. The Heavies started on Eddie Piller's Acid Jazz Records. I still have the Totally Wired compilation which featured their first track (an instrumental Funk tune, by the way). I got it in 1988, right after it was released ... and I didn't think too much of that track at first.

I was sooo hurt when they broke up. I know exactly what you mean about their latest effort too but I’m so glad they are back together. Music, especially live music can really touch, heal, change a person’s life. It can be a profound experience if you truly love live performances and believe in the power of the energy that comes from it. I’m so glad you had an awesome time but you were seeing BNH so there’s no way you couldn’t have a good time! JackieBlue said: What a wonderful experience! Well I can imagine how exciting it must be for your to read a post like this because I would absolutely flourish if someone devoted a thread like this here The first time I saw them I was amazed at how much energy she had. That woman RUNS that band.
You know, there was a point where she was in this freakin zone and she looked totally posessed It was great to just see her owning every second of the time she spent on that stage I was sooo hurt when they broke up. I know exactly what you mean about their latest effort too but I’m so glad they are back together. N'Dea said during the concert that they were back together so I'm glad that it's going to stay that way I think sometimes as fans we can be selfish and not realize or take into account that sometimes people need to stop what they are doing for very legitimate reasons. Throwing a fit about money, or control or anything like that does not qualify! But if someone needed to raise their kids, or if they are facing some personal hardship or they need to grow in other more important ways, then I can really understand why someone would choose to not be a part of such magic. But she was just silent for too long. Music, especially live music can really touch, heal, change a person’s life. It can be a profound experience if you truly love live performances and believe in the power of the energy that comes from it. I’m so glad you had an awesome time but you were seeing BNH so there’s no way you couldn’t have a good time! Yeah, at the time I had no idea that she had actually interrupted her solo career to become a part of this band and was just destroyed that she left them. But she did so to resume what she had intended to do all along. And really, I think she needed that extra time to develop her own voice so to speak. I think her solo is absolutely stellar. Very different than the Heavies stuff, but very fulfilling in it's own way I will touch on that album in a bit . I know people blow off Robin Thicke's music but the lyrics to one of his songs helped me get through a deep depression. it is always so amazing reading your writing, Richard. !!!!! Those are for you just because !!!!! Those are for the experience you got to have with India and Robin! I remember when you talked about meeting India and I thought that was simply amazing. I was so happy for you and for your experience. I was sort of jealous It couldn't have happened to a more beautiful woman though So far I have had the opportunity to tell 2 of my musical heroes what their music means to me. N'Dea and the lead from Inner City, you know the songs Good Life and Big Fun? I got to tell her what her music did for my life as well I did meet Me'Shell N'Degeocello at an in-store appearance for Comfort Woman and she was signing autographs and stuff and I blew it. Instead of taking the proper few minutes to express myself, I chose to say simply thank you and to tell her she has no idea what her art has done for our lives. She was very gracious, thanked me kindly and I moved on. Now the reason I chose to keep it extremely brief is because there were people in line that were acting like total stalkers and I didn't want to be that to her. I really wanted to respect her space but now that I look back I should have beat them bitches and taken the time that they squandered just being asses I could kick myself for letting that slip by. But next time, and there will be a next time, I will seize the opportunity to its fullest . [Edited 1/28/08 16:38pm] 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I always knew you were good people, that's just another perfect example of it! I mean I don't want to sound like a total stalker oh my god I hugged her! But it was just monumental to be able to say the things that were on my heart Music has been so commercialized that many consumers look to it as a commodity and it is often treated as such. Like cattle for the slaughter Dispensible, consumed and shat out. Music is so much more to me than that. Music has always been my salvation and is the thing that helps inspire me to write as music touches my soul. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be able to express just a slice of that. Wow.
You know what, Richard? I've always enjoyed the BNHs (especially looking at Jan ), but I never really thought about how good their music made me feel... until this thread. Their stuff is just good, quality feel-good music. Solid musicianship, respectable writing, great vocals. Nothing fluffy, but definitely lifting. Who couldn't use something like that in their life? After reading your post, I'm gonna revisit their catalog and probably replace my damaged and lost stuff of theirs. Thanks, bruh... and I'm thrilled to hear you've been so blessed by their music. Now that N'dea is back with them , well Im happy , over the moon , they never were quite the same without her , her vocals are in a different league to all the other vocalists they used . One of the best concerts I went to years ago , they were promoting Brother Sister and N'dea just ripped the roof straight off , pure contagious energy and the voice of an angel and a smile that can brighten up the whole damned room . Her stage presence is just amazing. She was non-stop, dancing and singing. I mean for real dancing and singing. OK, there are two truths about this band. They are talented as hell and their music is fonkay in its own right. But without the right lead, they can be forgettable. You can only rely on instrumentals to take you so far, you know? The difference between the stuff they recorded with Jay Ella Ruth and the reworks with N'Dea is just absolute night and day. Her voice is the engine to the band's gas. With the weaker singers it's like pouring gas on a bicycle and expecting to hit 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds I got into other Acid Jazz acts, like Incognito, because of this band. That genre is/was very fulfilling to me. Bring back the soul and live feel that was missing from the pre-fab music that was happening at the time .
