FINALLY I found a song that I really like from this project! I found myself groovin at my desk to this song. I hope Madonna and Pharell don't mess with this song too much cause I'm feeling this one. "Always the bridesmaid, never the bride"?? Come on, man, that's just lazy. In interviews she does it all the time. It's almost pathological. I don't expect her fans to notice of course. We all know what they're like, but to any sophisticated person it really shows how prosaic her mind is. And any artist worth their salt has a built-in cliche detector. Madonna doesn't. As much as I love Madonna,I really don't listen to her albums to find deep, amazing lyrics. She's not Stevie Wonder or Bob Dylan. She's a dance/pop artist and let's be honest, you won't find alot of earth-shattering lyrics in that genre.Seriously,if you wanna hear amazing songwriting, you pretty much have to stick with the 60s and 70s artists. We live in an era where a song like "My Humps" wins Grammys. It's like you almost have to "dumb down" your music just to get a hit. Cyndi's lyrics are often pretty great. Rene wrote some pretty good lyrics for Janet too. Madonna's brother-in-law wrote her some nice lyrics for "Don't Tell Me" too. It's not even about writing deep, amazing lyrics anyway. It's just about avoiding obviously weak lines that make the listener wince. Janet's "Feedback" has got some novel lines in it too, so genre is really no excuse. The truth is Madonna just sucks. She tried writing "deep" stuff on American Life, but she wasn't good enough to pull it off. "My father went to work / I thought he was a jerk". Terrible. And my point wasn't really about her wack lyrics anyway. It was about what a pretentious phony person she is. You meet people like this from time to time who hear something somewhere and then repeat it as if it's their own and expect you to be really impressed. Madonna is the queen of that. Her lyrics are only one place where you see this. It's in all her interviews too. You could fill a whole page with examples of this. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Madonna has a book of proverbs. In it you will find these penetrating insights. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained", "To thine own self be true", and "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it". I just hope she copyrights these sayings before some unscrupulous hack comes along and steals them. I admit that I had doubts about the album, but after hearing "4 Minutes" a few times (I much prefer the "longer" verison....why they are chosing to play the very short verison makes little sense to me), it's might be my favorite lead single from an album, but I'm still excited and I could careless about someone who bases Madonna's entire lyrical career on ONE SONG that was co-written by her brother in-law. Anyone have any idea why the radio verison is so damn short? Takes out some good stuff. Any thoughts or info on why they would take only 30 or so seconds out of an already short track for radio? I've heard the "full" (or fuller...I'm not even sure what is offical anymore) verison on BBC1 but the short verison plays on the Sirius dance station (which will definately play some longer tracks...instead of playing Madonna's "Sorry", they only play the PSB-maxi mix!, which is great (even though they don't say it is different). It makes as much sense of radio playing the longer verison of "Feedback", yet teh short album edits the track after Janet's vocals end!

i think that "mer girl" proves she can write really good and deep
lyrics that are introspective, mysterious and strangely universal at the same time. i know many fans don't like that song and perhaps that's why she doesn't tend to write deeper and more off center lyrics, because she is known for her pop music and pop lyrics and it's what the majority of her fans expects from her. still, her lyrics are dumbing down recently. there are good bits and pieces on all albums but in general everything past ROL is a bit sketchy. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

my opinion:
she's no great lyricist. She can't write a new "As" or songs like that. And honestly, I don't think it fits to her singing that kind of songs. As a John Lennon-Fan it hurt seeing her raping Imagine... BUT she can do better than : "Ring ring ring goes the telephone/The lights are down and there's noone home" Her Ray Of Light album has definitevly some of her best lyrics. No Substitute For LOve is beautiful. Then there are some songs, which have a nice meaning but she hasn't got the talent to express herself in a way, to not sound like a schoolgirl that's writing poems. But I really believe she's honest with the things she writes. I've heard she first writes poems in free form and then she makes them fit into a melody.

She loves the sound of her own voice for sure - and as a fan it grates me how cliche ridden alot of her lyrics can be (mainly over the last 4 records - Like It Or Not being my main hate). her interviews are my main bug bear though. When will some one be brave enough to do a propper interview with her where they dont ask her the same tired old questions that she's got pre prepared answers to.
She's a highly intelligent woman for sure - and while i think this certainly used to translate in her work (Erotica to Ray Of Light) - she gotten lazy lately. American Life had some good and some awful lyrics on it. Hollywood, Nobody Knows Me, Die Another Day, Xstatic Process, Easy Ride all had some nice lyrics in them, but alongside stuff like Im So Stupid, Love Profusion that good stuff is undone. The lyrics on Confessions said nothing to me - they weren't supposed to be the focal point of the record. Erotica is her lyrical highlight to me.

I think her best lyrics were on Like A Prayer.
I love "4 Minutes" to death, but was not impressed with "4 Minutes" - sounds too much Gwen & a bit of "Love Profusion"...

I#ve listened the whole morning to the long "4 Minutes" album and I think it sounds great.
It's in Gm... like the whole Music song (it had only one chord - Gm - as well), the middle has a very similiar chord change like the "Dress Me Up" chorus. I think the chords are Ebm F and Gm but I'm not sure. around these chords on the piano... anyway, Madonna just doesn't to the songs where the lyrics are most important. As a German, when I was a child I loved songs like Don't Tell Me, Holiday, Music, Ray Of Light, Frozen, Like A Prayer... because of the melodies. whether the lyrics were fine wasn't important. You just had to love these tracks, and it's still teh same with Madonna. She writes dancy pop songs nothing more. Sometime sshe tries to write something with an important topic but that's rare. I don't like the fact, that she thinks her lyrics are great. She said she did psycho-analytical sessions with Timberlake before they started to write songs. And she always talks about how inspiring songwriting is. But her lyrics are definitvely chliched. But as said before I don't care, and noone else should care as well. Nobody liked Madonna in teh first place because of her lyrics!

You seem to be the only one who actually understands what I'm saying. The lyrics are only one part of it. She loves the sound of her own voice, but everything she says is a cliche she heard somewhere else. Wasn't her speech for the R&RHOF the longest one in the history of the event? That says it all doesn't it? She wasn't so pretentious when she first came out. She was actually refreshingly shameless about her shallowness, but by the late '80s she started to believe the junk people like Camille Paglia were saying about her being a great "artist" and "revolutionary", and suddenly she started to play to that crowd. But since she was actually just a hollow fame-seeker, the only way she could carry off that pose was to repeat every cliche she ever heard that she thought sounded good. Like I said before, you could fill a whole page with examples of this from her lyrics and interviews. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”
