This is definitely her darkest album but I do not fear emotion so all is good Is the tracklist 10 songs? It seemed to me that there were like a million tracks for this Does anyone know the vibe for part 2? I think it's going to be more spiritual ala mama's gun as opposed to hardcore social commentary.
Also, it's obvious that Erykah is on a path but has she ever wrote about it or does she put her vibe out there regarding her spirit and how she feeds it? Was reading through the booklet and would love to hear her thoughts outside of a musical context 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Just copped it today. Classic in my opinion. Production is fresh and I love the flow of the album. Kick the old school joint 4 the true funk soldiers.

OK, I have been extremely scattered in my musical life but this year I made myself a promise to grab new releases when they come out instead of allowing bullshit to get in my way so..... This album is deep stuff! I can't even begin to explain what kind of things Badu is doing on this CD. One minute it plays like a social political record and the next minute, it seems like a spiritual meditation. It might not be the most typical or best thing she's made, but it sure is the deepest and darkest one she's done. I'm sorry uncool folks, but this gets my vote as the best soul release of 2008 (that is if you enjoy that free, thought-provoking music). Everything else, better come correct or else, they're staying on the shelf. I gotta give my humble props to Ms. Badu for this one! Now can the summer of 2008 come faster so we can get Part 2! The Cell is getting a freakin' lot of spins as of right now... [Edited 2/26/08 18:48pm] Check me out and add me on:

[Edited 2/26/08 19:04pm] Man you are so right! The main reason why Mama's Gun is still her best record is simple: this was Badu unmasked, with excessive pain, guilt, and wounds. She never sounded so honest and free before. Baduizm, as revolutionary as it was, didn't quite showcase that. With New AMERYKAH, you can hear her pouring out the pain and she also heals at the same time, but she still has some trouble not only in her personal life, but with the state of mind this world is in now. New AMERYKAH shows Erykah getting fed up with the bullcrap and getting all the anger and frustration out. I too, am glad she lets us get a peek of her emotions and healing pains here. I guess that's the reason why the new record is so deep, dark, and personal. Check me out and add me on:

yeah she really did... I'm so pleased... so proud this was beyond my greatest expectations that's why it's never good to expect and my hat off to Badu for tagging "Honey" onto the end as a bonus track "the track the record label chose for 1st single" a big FUCK YOU to her label... I LOVE IT! I believe this fact has been discussed here also... it doesn't fit in with the album even though it's the most radio friendly and the one people want the album for with it being at the end it kinda FORCES you to listen (ala "Be Happy" of Mary's MY LIFE album) also... no "Annie Don't Wear No Panties" (hopefully it will appear on Part Two) it's alot of trickery going on... and I love every loon boon second of it because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Thank you God yeah... that album cover is deep and yeah on the Katrina thing too this era reminds me so much of when Mama's Gun had come out... I can remember hoping the Cheebah Sac Mix of "Bag Lady" would appear on the album (which I'd had it already from the CD single anyway) this time around I'd already had the 12" for "Honey"... which I really like I said I expected her to be next level & raw & gritty... but I never expected it to be this great it's never good to have expectations cuz when i got into Mama's Gun things struck chords in me "I remember when I went with mama to the washateria..." I remember dat shit man!!! THAT LINE forced me to listen to what she was saying & where she was coming from... as a beat junkie I always get into the music first lyrics later... the washateria line is so funny to me though cuz in fact! I can remember one time going to the washateria with my mama and I'd always play the jukebox so she watched TV... and I begged for quarters to play tunes... I saw a new tune this particular day "Mountains"//Prince & The Revolution that is when I fell in love with that song I'd seen the video... but it was something about puttin my quarter in the slot hearing it drop... punching in my selection and the drums thumping in I think I plopped right down on that nasty ass floor LOL indian style... right there in front of the jukebox it was musical bliss... which is what I'm experiencing right now with New AmErykah Pt I ::curtains:: because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Ok..how is this album depressing and dark?
It is Freakquency. This was the album Worldwide Underground was making the prelude to. I love it. It is definitley a headphone banger just to get all the sounds and take everything in. Cant really listen to it on the speakers away washing the dishes, no this is not for that..this is brain and soul food. Im up to Twinkle and havent got anything that even closely resembles Voodoo as someone compared it to on amazon.com It is upbeat and trippy. Erykah is refining what R&B is and has the authority to do that at this moment. However be it not exactly there are no catchy songs other than Honey, but this is one album that will stand the test and one that will definitley be remembered of her collection. This is the album Meshell Ndegeochello should have done after "Cookie The Anthroprological Mixtape" which could have been a testament to the creation of Worldwide and this album. I gotta say, I'm halfway through the CD now and all i can say with what I've heard so far (I'm about to go into track 7, I left the CD book at home ) is this and it's from the words of Prince cause it fits perfectly:
This isn't music, this is a trip! It's weird, it's strange but it's so funky it's scary. I haven't looked at the CD book yet, shame on me, but I hope it has the lyrics cause she's saying some really deep stuff in there. So far. this is an excellent CD. I can only imagine what is left for me to listen to. [Edited 2/27/08 7:35am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
