MESHELL show(s) FRIDAY 1/11/08! RECORDABLE!!

One in Philly at noon at NPR World Cafe

Another at 9pm that evening in Brooklyn NY at
Music Hall of Williamsburg
66 North Sixth St,
Brooklyn, New York 11211
http://www.musichallofwilliamsburg.com

her official myspace page ( http://www.myspace.com/of...degeocello )
has a poster advertisement & blog for this show with a message that states:

"Since not everyone can make it to Brooklyn for the show, please feel free to record if you are attending. Both audio and video are welcome. Don't worry, unlike other artists that will go unnamed, there will be no lawsuits wink

Please leave expectations and flash photography at home though. Photos of the entire band are also encouraged.

Thank you everyone for your support over the past year."

pretty damn cool ain't it?

again please no NO FLASH photography... but it sounds like recording is fine! Indeed I was at a recent Meshell show where she mentioned that she was absolutely cool with folks sharing and downloading her live stuff as long as they still came out and supported the shows (and albums too i assume)...so...if you happen to be in the NY area around then...hint hint hint)

snarky, but true smile.

I can't say for sure that those are actually meshell's words per'se in exact quotes...in fact, probably not...but i'd bet she'd 'ditto' the feeling behind the words smile

but hey i can't speak for her, i'm just a fan...

I'm hoping to make it to that NY gig, though i doubt i'll be able to this time...hopefully someone will take her up on the post and record & share it at some point smile

by the way...in the spirit of Meshells open and clear attitude towards live sharing hopefully the org mods won't see this next part as a rule break (but if is just let me know and i'll edit and repost)...

but over at http://www.freemyheart.com in the 'Polylogue/Concerts' section & 'Polylogue/Meshell: Music and More' section there are several posts with links to live shows or clips of live that folks have shared over the last several Months...Detroit/Chicago/Minneapolis etc...these days she's playing mostly unreleased new stuff (mostly stuff that's SO new that it's not even on her latest critically acclaimed record "The World Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams". (theres also posts over at freemyheart with a bunch of reviews of tat album too by the way).
At her latests gigs, while she may play a few cuts from the record here and there, along with a few choice targeted covers...mostly she's been dropping brand spanking new stuff that you'll be likely hearing for the first time (and loving by the time you're done if you've got open ears smile )...just like i like it... unpredictable, raw, nakedly honest, creative & new...

thats my girl Meshell for ya....

So like i said, there seems to be two shows that day, Noon show in Philly and the 9pm show in NY...as mentioned in the blog on her myspace , recording of the NY show is welcome...

but for those who can't make it to THAT one...

...a post over at http://www.freemyheart.com says that there's a CHANCE that the NOON show that same day (in Philly) could potentially be FREE to some lucky folks in that area, AND could POSSIBLY be streamed on the web for the rest of us as well....see below...

".... a Friday noon show at World Cafe Life usually means WXPN "Free At Noon". If so, she'll be playing a free show to people who reserve their tickets through 88.5 WXPN (radio thru University of Penn). I forget if you have to be a member to get tickets.

ALSO,if it's a "Free At Noon" show, it will most likely be broadcast live on WXPN, which is also available streaming at
www.xpn.org. ...."

Update: i just went to the xpn link and Meshells noon-time gig IS listed as the ' Free At Noon ' set... so yeah, now I KNOW i'll be logging onto the web Friday at 11:59am to listen in...

enjoy!

The DV cam is too large to take, and I'm really in the mood to just enjoy the show, but the still has video mode, I'll try to get something...just for the org.

However, if the audio is crappy, I won't be posting. I'll wait to see if she posts, as she sometimes does, & I'll combine.

cool. either way, if you record something or not, post back a review if you can. Her last batch of shows she was playing 99% new stuff (killing fast paced revved up stuff!) stuff that was SO new it wasn't even on her latest album. So I'm curious as to whether she's rocking those songs (and if so, how they have evolved with the band) or wether she's got a whole NEW batch of songs she's gonna unleash...knowing her, probably a little of both. wink

one thing's for sure, whoever goes to see Meshell will be WOW'ed! She's in a class all by herself when it comes to what you hear when you hear her live, plus she plays many songs from the latest album (the best released in 2007, IMHO!)

So, did anyone go? I didn't make it. Someone flaked.
Something about Meshell and Van Hunt, I just can't seem to make it to their shows.

Bummed. But, I'll try for the next.

go over to http://www.freemyheart.com

hit the "Polylogue"/"Concerts" section...then look for the thread titled "So...Jan 11th...?"

...if you scroll through that thread there's two links to audio downloads of the Jan 11th afternoon mini-show in Philly. (one is just one long mp3 and the other is tracked for each song.)

In that thread there's also links to a video/photo montage and photos from the Jan 11th evening show in NY...

so far i haven't seen any audio of the NY show surface...but i'm still looking...

Update: In that same thread over at freemyheart there is now ALSO a link to the first audience recording i've come across of the 1/11/08 evening NY set (get it while it's hot folks!)

It doesn't appear to be the whole show, and remember it's an audience recording (not soundboard) so the sound quality isn't going to be crystal clear obviously, but Meshell and the band are on fire... it's a ferocious performance of some very powerful music...she's definitely doing her thing like only she can...i personally think the new stuff she's playing is SO kick-ass, creative and catchy...i'm loving it ALL to death. She's such a badass...the baddest of the bad if you ask me. Some amazing stuff.

anywayz...go get it while the gettin is good...

I've been checking out Meshell since the very beginning of her career but lately she seems 2 be in a ZONE. The live stuff is KILLING. Why don't they stream a hi-quality live set on the site?

i agree...this new stuff she's playing lately is so gutsy, and wide open.

For me what she does SO exceptionally well is manage to balance subtlety AND power in her music. There are so many artists who can be very explosive but lack the ability to cultivate a sincere & more subtle emotional connection...and then there are other artists who get the subtle emotional element down but they aren't so good at being explosive when something calls for it. Meshell always amazes me with her ability to do BOTH and do both so friggin WELL.

I mean I know some artist can 'fake' it if you know what i mean...create 'semi-pseudo' ideas/versions of whatever it is that they might not normally do so well. But Meshells stuff...whether its aggressive or intimate...her stuff just feels so naked, legitimate, honest and unpretentious in that regard. All the way through & through.

Sometimes i find myself shaking my head in disbelief when i think that the same artist who creates 'Shirk' or 'Drowning In Your Beer' also creates 'Lock & Load' and "The Sloganeer"...and then you have the song they are often playing live now "Green" where it is JUST as intimate and beautiful as it powerful & explosive (it's Mark Kelly's tune). The way they put that song together and pull it off is often literally jaw dropping...

anyway, your question about high quality streams...a lot of these recordings are fan made. There simply aren't any (known) high quality recordings of that particular show available to stream. There are some higher quality recordings of webcast/radio set that she's done in that thread (and others), but none (so far) for the late night NY gig. Maybe some will show up in the future (as have shown up for older gigs of hers over the years). Keep your fingers crossed smile

well i don't think so...word is that, though Meshell herself wanted to let folks plug in at the NY set, the club decided not to allow it or something like that. the tracked version of the Philly show that was streamed on the web has a slightly better sound level...

but so far that's all i've come across...
