It's definitely Prince-inspired, or at least it's the kind of song that MJ usually doesn't put on his one-every-5-years albums as it's not a real 'song' but more a funky throw-away (in the best sense of the word). As we all know Prince is a master at those smile

(btw, I *love* the direction MJ took on the 5 new BOTDF tracks. They were not necessarily great songs, but they were vintage MJ and a logical follow up after Dangerous and HIStory (unlike Invincible afterwards))

I always thought of it as crap. I don't like those songs like Superfly Sister (see also Privacy, 2 Bad, DS, Morphine) where he's just shouting and chanting rather than singing.

He's got one of the most beautiful, unique voices ever and yet he wastes it by not using it on these types of tracks.

The review for Invincible in Village Voice summed it up well where the reviewer says -

"An odd thing about Michael Jackson is that he has a totally spectacular voice but he doesn't feel the need to amaze us with it. At all. His favorite technique for conveying passion is to choke off his words. On dance songs he makes his voice as hard and compact as the percussion, reducing himself to icy shards and chilly wails. And when he lets loose with dazzling gospel-like displays, he undermixes these displays, letting them play in the background while drumbeats or simpler vocals take the spotlight. Or he'll just put whispers in the front of the mix, while scaling heights in the distance."

Not Prince sounding at all to me. It's Mike from the getgo with those generic newjack drums. I always skipped over this one.

But wait...

I agree that Michael overdid it with all the shouting and grunting in his songs. I appreciate the fact that he likes to experiment, but he had been singing like that for so long that I was just ready for him to get back to "real" singing and that was one thing I liked about "Invincible". Regardless of the terrible reviews the album got, I was glad to see that he had finally gotten back to actual singing on songs like "Butterflies", "Break of Dawn", etc. Vocally, that was the best he had sounded in years.

Yep, I agree with that. Break of Dawn and Butterflies were a welcome return to form. Heaven Can Wait came close too.

It might be slang, but I don't think it's a slur. Superfly is like "most beautiful" and sister is slang for "black woman."

Brilliant song. How good are the ad-libs at the end! In fact, the 5 tracks on BOTDF were amazing. There wasn't a real effort to be too commerical as with invincible, and the difference is quite notable.
