Tom Petty playing the Super Bowl This year Tom Petty will play the Super Bowl halftime show and quite frankly I am very surprised. Is he really an upper tier performer? I mentioned to my brother that are expectations were so low that maybe Tom Petty would surprise us. My brother replied: What is he gonna do fly across the stage? What do you think of Tom Petty as the choice for this years performance?

"Petty's songs and lyrics go to the root of the American dream. For over 30 years, Petty has been a rock icon who continues to inspire new generations of artists. We are honored to present him with the 2005 Century Award." yeah, he's top tier

I thought for a minute from the thread title that he had jacked in the music lark and taken up sports. "Bit old for that, isn't he?!" I thought to myself, but hey why not. This is not an exit

I saw Tom in 1990 and all he did was stand (or sit) there on stage. His songs are great and I'm sure he will perform them well, but I can't imagine any kind of spectacle going on. I'd like to see him do "Running Down A Dream" Good choice for the year after Prince. I wonder if there will be any mentions in the press this year about how awesome Prince was last year. Huge Tom Petty fan here (in fact have his Greatest Hits playin now) and I think he'll do a great job. He's still popular...I saw him live a few years ago at an outdoor arena and the place was sold out...also have to mention the weed smoke was THICK. But the guy is very mainstream and is very popular amoungst the football crowd.
But honestly halftime for me is time to pee, then get in line for food, grab another beer, and get ready for the 2nd half. Last year I watched Prince's kick ass performance while in line for food...and got a hell of a lot of shit from my buddies for holding up the line...until they all agree'd it was the best half time show in a LONG time. More important question...who do you all think will take it????

20-25 years ago...yeah http://en.wikipedia.org/w...iscography [Edited 1/17/08 6:10am] Kind of like Prince and alot of others that play the superbowl.
