Well a lot of people on the org can't hear it, either, so yup - whatever, indeed. Whatever, Alicia.

Ok so what artists do we honestly see growth in that have come out in this decade? i really would love to see that list? like i said it is what it is, people see growth in Beyonce in the last decade, really? what musical growth has there been? im still hearing the same song since 1998, and sales dont mean dick, i dont care how many she sells, sales dont show growth by any means. I tend to not trust the public since 90% of them said to invade iraq, so my trust in publics opinions is about zero. Artistry is shown by how much you put yourself out there, and where you go with it, Elton John had 17 albums between 1969-1975, no musician, artist whatever could even dream that output, and he also wrote all the music, to taupin's lyrics, and he was considered a POP star.

I really can't think of any off the top of my head, now I gotta come up with a list? lol

So, you are arguing that we should defend Alicia Keys for being "better" than most popular performers today? Nope, not going to do it. I am not going to praise mediocrity. Moreover, her music personifies blandness. I would rather have good music from the likes of Rihanna than bland recreations from Alicia, who would have failed as a classical pianist just as she is failing at popular music.

No just saying drop the double standard, i see a praise of Van Hunt and yet the good is just good, thats where it ends, and hes like 5 different artists recylced, what he is doing i saw Lenny doing in clubs 15-20 years ago. As for Rihanna her music is built off of the past even more, since when does sampling someones music or re-working their phrases an form of art, you are nothing more than doing Karaoke. Im not saying praise anyone, i could really care less on who gets praise, because i have never bought peoples praise of anyone anyway, if that stuff mattered than chart positions would dictate whats good and whats not.

When did I praise Van Hunt?

I like Rihanna's Umbrella. Better than 99% of what Alicia Keys has done in the last seven years.

Didnt say you but look at the majority of the org, who hate alicia, they tend to praise Van hunt, whos Ok but come on already, anyone who doesnt think hes recycling and can see she is at the same time. As for Rihanna , shes bland, shes boring after the first few listens, shes like chewing gum with no flavor.

Her voice is flat for sure. She has little input in the creation of her music. But she is smart, ambitious, and attractive (to some). However mediocre she is as a musical talent, she has had good singles. The extent to which Umbrella has been embraced in numerous circles is a testament to this, I think.

A number of orgers dislike Van Hunt. Just check out the "Van Hunt is Prince's Son" thread.

Just accept the fact that a lot of people think Alicia Keys is mediocre.

Do i care what people think about Alicia? Why would i? im not getting a check from her if i sing praise, nor am i praising her "like that" but i do see her better after cd 3 than cd 1, after cd 1 i didnt like her, and im sure if we go back on the org. im sure the majority liked her after "fallin", but i didnt say anything at that point. Ok Rihanna has had good singles, but her input is almost nothing, i will be more impressed if she gets through 5-6 albums and shows more than just hooks from past songs created by others, than i will give her praise. Alicia is not even close to my list of top "artists" of this decade.

Rihanna has a long way to go before she becomes what she has said she wants to be: the "Black Madonna." Her next album should be interesting.

As for Alicia, I have always thought she was mediocre. But I do like the songs Fallin' and If I Ain't Got You. Perhaps she has improved from her first album -- but not nearly enough to justify the praise she receives. Sadly she seems to be believing the hype herself.

But there again its the praise that she receives, thats what my issue is, i dont really care who likes her or who doesnt, we all have our opinions on every artist, BUT she isnt the one doing the praising, if she was than i would have issue. Just imagine she came out with statements and said things like "Me an Beyonce" are like Stevie and Prince? Crazy statement, but there are artists that do that, Kanye, Justin etc.. thats all im saying. Label people or critics who praise, thats their job, but its all BS with all their artists, so i dont listen to what they think, do i really care that someone like LA reid is saying the new Janet and Mariah will be great? Hell no, i'll decide that, he has to say that its his job. The problem i have is when the actual artist is telling me, and i have never heard Alicia say stupid shit like Kanye or Justin have.
HYPE is useless because NOTHING ever lives up to it, and this whole generation is all about HYPE thats why everyone fails or people just give up. So im ignoring people like LA because he's hyping up two records that i know, if i buy into his BS im going to be let down by, so i ignore him.

Still does not transform her into a humble talent in my eyes. Her music still sounds bland to me.

But other than our disagreement about Alicia, I agree for the most part about the state of the music industry today.

You know why this chick thoroughly sucks balls or in her case vagene?

What's the difference between her and some random hip pop artist, oh yeah the clothes and piano prop.

She has the technical ability of any random 11 yr old that got lessons since they were four, actually they're better.

She can't jam.

She can't sing. I'm sorry flat moaning and groaning don't count.

She doesn't write anything. She samples, bites, and waters down like the Beyonces and etc. and the microscopic material she has a hand in sucks.

She's basically the product of your typical stage mom that drags her kid to auditions, vocal and piano lessons, and hopes something comes of it so mommy doesn't have to get a real job to support her drug habit. She just happened to pop up at the right time when execs were looking for a different type of packaged act and found the right angle.

She was someone they could sell to the neosoul suckers and someone the shit hop fools would eat up and she's got the CROSSOVER look. Nice checks all around.

She's just as much a part of the wave of CRAP in mainstream as any T Stain or Stinkin Park.

Alicia Keys is a lot better that you people are giving her credit for, but she is still developing as an artist, and her output is more a reflection of the state of the current music industry than her actual musical abilities (or lack thereof).

As for the hype factor, you have to take into consideration who her peers are. When Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson first came out, they were competing against Madonna, Prince, Michael Jackson, Sade, Duran Duran, U2, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Phil Collins, and a number of other big 80's stars, so while they were considered to be potential superstars at the time, their hype was limited compared to the stars of the time. When Mariah Carey first came out, she was competing against the aforementioned Madonna, Whitney, and Janet and later against Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, and Sheryl Crow, not to mention Nirvana and the whole grunge/alternative scene and 2Pac, Biggie Smalls, Dr. Dre, the Wu-Tang Clan, and other hip-hop superstars, so even her hype machine was tempered somewhat. However, when Alicia Keys came out, her only real competition at the time was Britney Spears, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Emimem. Of those, only Beyonce, Justin, and Christina could still be considered her peers, as Britney has devolved into a tabloid freakshow and Eminem has become a recluse. You could throw in Usher and Kanye West as competing peers, but then you have a massive drop off in talent in her peer group, which includes T-Pain, Soulja Boy, Lil' whatever (Kim, Wayne, Flip, Mama, doesn't matter). At any rate, compared to the current crop of stars, Alicia looks like Aretha Franklin. She may not necessarily be worthy of the hype, but there are few artists that are worthy of that hype right now.

Everyone and their mother would not be so crass as to rewrite such a great lyric into something so hopelessly corny. That alone should tell you that this person just is not an artist. No-one with an artist's sensibility would do something so misguided. Imagine covering a Bob Dylan tune and replacing the lyrics with your own generic fluff. You would expose yourself as a clueless wannabe right away. Alicia's done that many times. But you find her hugely attractive, so it's no good trying to make you see the light. You are someone who is swayed by his dick far too much.
[Edited 1/20/08 15:54pm]

Everyone who samples and covers re-writes classic artists, i think we should blast them all, Destinys Child changing words to the Bee Gees song, Black Eyed Peas and almost every artist associated with the John Lennon "Darfur" album, that re-wrote his lyrics to do their stupid "takes" and "raps" on his work. And for the record i DONT find her attractive, so as usual an assumption you have no clue on the artists i like or listen to. I could point out how so many artists on this site that we praise are nothing more than WANNABE's all stealing from the past.

No artist of any worth would butcher a lyric like that. Once again, your defence rests on comparing her to the worst of her peers, which actually illustrates how she is really no better than them. And you may have forgotten this, but you've been up in here before telling us how sexy she is. You listed her as one of the most attractive women in music today. Seems like you're doing a U- Turn now.

My problem with Alicia is that she has a #1 song with NO ONE. And the song and music are ok.... her vocals are garbage.

I agree people rip her for some reasons that other's get a pass.

Can we discuss how the hell can someone think she is so talented and NOT BE ABLE TO SING IN KEY??

Last Dec, you know I hold you in high regard. Do you think A. she was in key for Human Nature B. is she in key in No One?

Vocally I can not make it through one performance of her's.

When she played with Keith Urban on Gimme Shelter my ear's were crying.

Song wise I have never had an issue with thinking her song's were bad, yes they are very derivitive but who's aren't right now.

And back to Ryan Adams.. He is light years ahead of her in song structure and vocal performance.

I have no agenda with Alicia, maybe it's just my ear's by I feel like when you are tuning a guitar and you hear the note going wah wah back and forth every time she sings.

nope there again you missed it, someone started a post about natural sex appeal, and ran down there lists, i pointed out that from this generation AMERIE was the only one that had it, like the old classics from back in the day, than someone later in the post chimed in with Alicia Keys and i agreed with certain aspects of her sex appeal, that doesnt mean a damn thing. Big difference, there are alot of people who can have sex appeal and not be "pretty" two different things, i find Mya to have "sex appeal" but she is far from pretty, Carmen Electra has "sex appeal" but isnt pretty, Christina Aguilera can have sex appeal but she isnt pretty, huge difference. Sex appeal and being pretty and not pretty are two different things which is what the post was about, go back and read it.

As for no artist butchering lyrics, i suggest you pick up the John Lennon Darfur charity album and i think you will agree that most of the artists on the record altered the lyrics and poorly just to make their stupid songs or raps, this album with the exception of u2, rem and a-Ha and Duran Duran, none of these artists had any "right" to even warrant inclusion on this record.

Her vocals to me are OK, im not really into these "slick, overproduced" vocals where it sounds like the artist had nothing to do with their records, or they did 400 takes to piece it together and make it right. John Lennon when he recorded Twist and Shout back in the early 60's did 40+ takes of it until they got a version where he sounded strained enough, because thats what they were going for. Last year AMERIE recorded easily the best "mainstream rb" album "Because I love it" and the beauty of this record is that fact alone, some people said she sounded "strained" in some vocals, but shit thats what its about, im tired of everyone cleaning up their records so much when they perform live you really see how they suck. For her singing "Human Nature" like i said before i wouldnt listen to it because i know the original and to me you need to have at least 10+ albums or a longer career before you even warrant singing classic covers, and this goes for Beyonce butchering a bee Gee song, talk about sucking the life out of a song.

As for Ryan Adams, he is light years ahead of anyone at this point for the most part, and like i said Alicia has done 3 records in 7 years, that isnt enough recording, when you are starting out these artists need to be putting out at least a record a year, i know labels dont like that, but its the only way you grow artistically, go back to any decade where the musical climate was strong and you will see artists doing at least a record a year.

The only defense some of you have for the girl's obvious lack of talent is that she'll develop and is better than T Stain, and oh yeah, you think her Fievel-esque lab rat like looks are hella sexay.

You can insist all day long that people dump on Alicia and praise Bigonce and the like, but you know that's just not true.

I actually might give the girl a pass if she could wow me or at least get my head moving when she sat behind a pianer because hell Lauryn has an awful voice AND she raps, but she can strum her way to forgiveness.

I don't know where some think Fievel is going when her body of work up to this point has been OTHER people's stuff.

I think some of you despite your obvious sense and taste bought the hype, but GONE are the days when someone who was shoved in your face most likely deserved to be there.

Seems like you're doing a U- Turn now.
[Edited 1/21/08 6:27am]

As for no artist butchering lyrics, i suggest you pick up the John Lennon Darfur charity album and i think you will agree that most of the artists on the record altered the lyrics and poorly just to make their stupid songs or raps, this album with the exception of u2, rem and a-Ha and Duran Duran, none of these artists had any "right" to even warrant inclusion on this record.

Looks like I have to repeat myself again. I didn't say "no artists butcher lyrics", I said "No artist of any worth would butcher a lyric like that". And once again, you can only defend her by comparing her to other non-entities. Sorry, but that is a PATHETIC defence. And let's be clear about this, you are clearly in the habit of defending women you find attractive. I don't hear you defending Usher, JT, Omarion, T Pain, or any similar MALE non-entities.

Actually i didnt buy the HYPE since i didnt think album 1 warranted the praise and i still dont buy the praise given to her or any other artist, i give the praise, since im the one buying a persons record. People praised ARCADE FIRE as the best band in the world, i bought it, and wondered where was this "band" everyone was talking about, because it surely wasnt on the record, and thats what i mean by HYPE. With Alicia, i think she is light years better on cd 3 than cd 1, to a point where i can listen to it all the way, but thats not praise. And yes i will site Beyonce since she has 10 years now countless albums and i am hearing the same song for 10 years now, the same singing style, the same song structures. As for as her songs being others songs, well, whatever, i mean there are artists out there now that base their songs entirely on samples from others songs, and using lines and catch phrases from other songs and yet its regarded in a higher light? Really thats very interesting.

Well look at the artist list of the Lennon album and there are plenty that have been given "worth" in this forum. As for i find attractive or not how is that an issue, if someone does a good record its a good record? I think Rihanna is attractive, do i praise her music? I think Mariah is hot but have i been praising her musically? I think Janet is hot but i have hated her last two records. Sorry but the people i have given props to did a good record, Amerie and Hilary Duff did a great fucking records last year, sorry that she is pretty also, but the record is the best that came out "mainstream" last year. Why dont i defend Usher or T Pain, well when they do something that warrants defense i will, up till now its not anything i care about because its just boring painting by numbers rb. Omarion well hes nothing more than Ciara and as you will see she is pretty and i havent praised ever. In the last year i praised work from Rashaan Patterson, Angie Stone, Jill Scott from RB and others like Crowded House,John Mellencamp,McCartney, Ann Wilson, Norah Jones and many others who all put out the best records of last year, where were all the MUSIC LOVERS on those posts.

So think what you will like, but its that simple, if its a good record i will praise it, if it sucks than i will say it. I mean a-Ha is my favorite band and they blow everyone away, but am i defending them to people because the lead singer is good looking? how come no one asks that, i mean be real already, thats just plain dumb. I think Madonna is a good artist, is that because shes attractive? No its because her work grows and challenges the listener, sometimes its shit, but most of the time its not. So i hated Christina Aguilera's first record but thought "Stripped" was great, so if i defend her doing a great album is it because shes pretty, or that she has talent of some degree.

They were posting on stuff they felt, and quite a few posters actually like the people you mentioned.

As for how I feel, well

Rashaan - snore
Angie - won't sing her own stuff, so so voice, snore
Jill - snore
Johnny Cougar - meh
Beatle - snore
Norah - snore, but she has a couple good songs in her

This thread is about Alicia Keys and her cover of Human Nature. The fact is most who have written in this thread think it was horrible. What about you? How do you think she did?

I dont like it mainly because i dont like covers, interpretations, stylings, samples or whatever of songs that were already done a certain way, plain and simple i said that 10 posts ago. Everyone who does covers 99% of the time fails, especially when they alter the song, change words or anything like that, if you are going to cover a song, do it note for note.

Sort of difficult to read your posts since you do have a tendency to go off tangent when you become passionate about something. smile

I dislike her cover because she is a horrible singer. I had no idea that it was possible to croak through Human Nature.

alicia is boring period.. from her looks, style, music and personality... its more then just talent that makes someone famous.. there are lost of people who can sing and dance....

rihanna has some nice songs, cute style.. and Barbados girl... with a cute accent... she is at least trying new things... and she is most humble unlike alicia keys...

Rihanna has really progress from her first album... and she said that she did not grow up singing or performing so its going to take time before she reaches her peak...

That was wack. There was no emotion and I don't understand why she changed the lyrics to one of my fave songs on earth.

Famous? who cares about fame, id rather artists make a statement and do good records and not be concerned with fame, if that were the case than a Billboard chart or some other nonsenes would dictate whats good and whats not. Alicia is boring to you to others she isnt, just like Rihanna is boring to others but not to you. People think the Eagles are boring but there album sold more than "these so called" famous people and they didnt have to depend on videos or airply, so boring is what again purely opinion. So a good % of the org dont like her, BFD, im sure she is crying over it. Music is more than get up and dance, sorry, but it is, if thats all you like than cool, sorry, but that doesnt cut it for me, i need to know the artist worked on the record and didnt just put together the HYPE producers of the month to have a hit single, because if that guides your career, than sorry, but artistically you lose alot of cred.
There again its all opinion, you hate her others dig her, you think shes boring, i think what Rihanna is doing is nothing more than being supplied her songs, looks and going with it, you could put anyone in that situation and get the same result, sorry but its true, just look at the whole POP of the late 90's early 2000's, get the right look and hook and sell, thats not being an artistic.
