I am from Austria. The most famous musicians/composers from there are probably Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Falco and for some reasons most non-Austrians think of the Sound Of Music when they think of Austrian music shrug.

Here are 2 local Austrian acts:

Actually, he reformed Crowded House last year. They toured for the last six months. BTW, you didn't mention his older brother, Tim Finn (co-founder of Split Enz, temporary member of Crowded House, and successful solo artist in his own right). Neil's son Liam Finn is also a recording artist who released his debut solo album last year after years in the band Betchadupa.

Bic Runga, another girl who writes Tracy Chapman style songs

She's best known in the U.S. for the song "Sway," which was featured in American Pie (and a host of TV shows). I saw her open for the Finn Brothers a few years back and she was great!

True your right, there was a reunion tour, but its a different drummer, the original CH drummer Paul Hester (Australian, only Neil is a kiwi and thats why a lot of people list CH as an Aussie band, the Aussies are notorious for stealing our thunder, eg Phar Lap was born in Timaru, Russell Crowe was born in New Zealand) took his own life 3 years ago.
Also sorry about Tim Finn, he fronted Split Enz and was the lead singer. He then embarked on a solo career from 1980 onwards with the hit "I hope I never" and then had a big hit with "Theres a fraction too much fiction" in 1983, and "Parihaka" in 1989 was about a maori land occupation which ended up in bloodshed in the 1880s. Tim is still active in Music and releases a new album every 3 or so years, hes also done some with Neil (Tim was born in 1952, Neil in 1958).

Bic has been very quiet lately, she released an album in 2004, but her sister BOH fronts an enormously successful group called Stellar. (They are of mixed Maori and Chinese ancestry in case u r wondering)

Two other acts are the Topp Twins (Lesbian singing duo and comedians who drag up a la Barry Humphries and yodel), and Herbs, the legendary Maori reggae group of the 1980s. The 1990s had the Maori groups, Upper Hutt Posse, Moana and the Moahunters, and Maori protest rapper "Damn Native" all became passe when gangsta rap arrived with people aping Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg in the early 90s

Ottensen

My expatriate country of Germany has a few enjoyable acts in between all the usual dance and rap nonsense they put out . I'll start with a smattering here:

R&B/ (Neo) SOUL

Glashaus (for those who like the subtle musicality of maybe Sade)

http://www.youtube.com/wa...XU7s3FLkLk

Joy Denalane (for all the Jill and Erykah fans out there)

http://www.youtube.com/wa...Jp0pbPvdao

POP & ROCK (this catagory could be good for Voices Carry & Cinnie)

Wir Sind Helden (clever indie pop band that blew up like a Motha)

http://www.youtube.com/wa...KAcShfgq54

Jan Delay (a MARGINALLY talented but very likeable chap who started in reggae & hip hop here)

http://www.youtube.com/wa...ZITtb-Abgs

MIA (the "it" band among the German fashionista set, from Berlin)

http://www.youtube.com/wa...Clb3XmzrgQ

HIP-HOP & REGGAE

Seeed (German dancehall)

http://www.youtube.com/wa...oJS0HCxUgY

Fantastischen Vier/the Fantastic Four (Old Skool icons pretty much the German equivilent to the Beastie Boys...they're ollld but have mad luv lol )

http://www.youtube.com/wa...rDQRSBWGak

JAZZ, ADULT CONTEMPORARY

Roger Cicero (German Harry Connick/Michael Bublé, but started his career as a Donnie Hathaway Stevie Wonder follower, a multi-instrumentalist formerly similar in style to maybe Robin Thicke/Raul Midon. His current breakout cd is actually the first time I've ever heard him sing in German since I've lived here, and heard him do swing, which his father was known for in post-war Germany and Romania

http://www.youtube.com/wa...8wvKWxUs9y

Annette Louisan (pleasant singer/songwriter adult cont. occasionally similar to Norah)

http://www.youtube.com/wa...3gWmMJ5cO4

OLDIES BUT GOODIES:

I know you guys haven't seen her since 99 Red Balloons, but she's been right here all the time making records for the last 20 years, prettier than ever, still skinny, and with 50,000 kids lol Germany's beloved rock/pop icon-soccer mom,

NENA!- this is from her 20th annivesary record back in 2002, "Nena Ft. NENA":

No Welsh orgers gonna post any Welsh-language bands?

Catatonia did the odd Welsh or part Welsh song, plus of course the Super Fury Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci (hope I got the spelling right).

I'm not Welsh, I'm English so I can't really add any more to the debate!

The funny thing is that many of these people are creative, professional, and social colleauges of mine lol ... and I can't belive I forgot Xavier Naidoo wacky!I totally could see some of the org ladies really falling for him smile.

Insofar as Roger Cicero, it's true he is a major fan of Prince as well as Stevie. Through the years (pre-fame), I've seen him cover just about everything from both, as well as excellent James Taylor covers in shows. You should see him do an acoustic guitar version of "Sometimes It Snows In April", it is absolutely flawless. He's made his mark celebrity wise by embracing his jazz baladeer "self", but his "hidden r&b-twin" ain't nothing to sneeze at. I've seen him in small clubs, having church-going tourist ladies from the deep south of the U.S. sit slack-jawed, eyes bulging & foaming at the mouth while he was singing a Prince or Stevie slow jam on solo piano falloff

We women are sooooo predictable lol

That's interesting that Roger Cicero has done Prince songs a lot, I didn't know that. Cool cool. I like Sasha's song "Slowly" and that's pretty much the only song by him I like and that was the reason I saw him live some months ago and he covered "I could never take the place of your man" lol.
