What did Gloria say?

I find it odd that these types of artists (dance music divas) would make anti-gay comments.Don't they realize that gays make up most of their audience? LOL

Something about how she believes in everything the Bible "says", lol, but never really saying anything, lol. Just letting people use their imagination. Apparently some take that as gay-bashing.

Take away all of Gloria's gay fans, and her fanbase would be non-existent lol Talk about biting the hand that feeds her, lol.

These days,it's all about survival.Cyndi has to do music that appeals to people..You want her to do that alternative stuff, but that kind of music obviously doesn't pay her bills lol She has to do something that people will actually buy.The gay/dance music market is a very profitable market, especially for older female artists,so why shouldn't she jump on it? Cher and Madonna have had tremendous success in this market, despite their age.

At least you're actually giving an honest response, and not trying to deny the very existence of the gay/dance market. lol But let's be clear. The last thing I want Cyndi doing is alternative stuff. I want her doing what comes naturally to her, which is organic pop. I sincerely believe that if her record company had actually promoted "Hatful Of Stars" in 1993 it would have been a huge hit and things would be very different. Like most people, I didn't buy that album when it came out because I never even heard about it. If I'd have actually heard it then I certainly would have bought it, and it's because of that lack of record company support that she's now having to employ this strategy.

Now I understand Cyndi wants to sell some records and this is a logical way to do it, but I just question if it's worth it if it means leaving behind what you really love. There are some things that are more important than commercial success.

The woman toured with Cher. Pandering to a gay audience is hardly a new thing for Cyndi. In fact, it's probably the only audience she's had left for 10 years now.

Good point.I had forgotten about her slot on the Cher tour. The mainstream/pop audience has left her behind.

Yeah, she hasn't had a top ten hit since 1989's "I Drove All Night" really.

I think Cyndi has done OK for herself. She's still putting out music, still making the late-night talk show circuit and getting her product out there.

Considering that she debuted as a cartoonish, annoying and child-like figure -- all of which did a great job at obscuring her considerable talents as a songwriter -- she's survived the music-industry meltdown with something close to longevity (just without continual superstardom).

She's done better than a lot of other talented acts from the 1980s, especially among female artists.

Yeah, it's just the untalented ones who did better than her. lol

Hey, man, you know how the machine works. Britney gets way more press than most of my favorite female vocalists.

Is the kind of press Britney's been getting the last few years the kind you want your favorite female vocalists to get? I doubt it biggrin

Bad example. Try Aguilera or Jessica Simpson, instead...

That alone tells you how desperate Cyndi is nowadays.

Do you know how Lauper is doing these days financially? Because if she is consistently touring and putting out albums (even if they are not blockbusters).... I wonder why she wants to work with Madonna. Perhaps she wants to go mainstream again?

That's exactly it. Financially, she's probably doing a lot better than you or me. lol She co-wrote "Time After Time" which has probably earned more money than any Madonna song, just on radio play and cover versions alone, and yes, she still tours regularly, but she's been struggling now for years. Even on her "Live...At Last" DVD, they show her risking life and limb to film video footage as a backdrop to be used in her show. The reason she had to film it herself was because, as she jokes, "we don't have the money" to pay someone else to do it. smile

But Cyndi never planned on being a cult artist. She's been heroically trying to work her way back to the mainstream for years now, but has been frustrated by "the gatekeepers" (her word) who basically wrote her off as "an '80s act".

That makes sense, since she wrote or co-wrote a number of her biggest songs.

I wonder what she thinks of '80s acts who are far less talented than her but have managed to maintain mainstream status throughout the '90s and '00s. confused
