With Prince's Backing, A Latin Band Soars

NPR.org, January 14, 2008 - An artist as elusive as they come, Prince hasn't often taken bands under his wing in recent years. But the Austin-based Latin outfit Grupo Fantasma, which played a two-month Thursday-night stint at Prince's Las Vegas nightclub last year, has increasingly found itself taking on the role of his "unofficial" backing band for concerts, parties, and events.

Grupo Fantasma first formed in 2000, and the 11-piece orchestra quickly made its mark by thrilling local audiences with high-energy live performances. The band's latest release, the appropriately titled Grupo Fantasma Comes Alive, was recorded before a live audience at Antone's in Austin. Just one great highlight in a seamless set, "Oye Mi Cumbia" with its blaring trumpets and funky rhythm section clearly illustrates the raw power that Grupo Fantasma brings with it, whenever and wherever it's on stage.

Let's hope they fare better than Prince's other pet projects.

The next time he's bumpin' around Austin and wants to get his Latin on,...

...he should check out Del Castillo.

Very good band, very good people and the del Castillo brothers (Rick & Mark) burn on guitar.

I hope he heard the funk rhythm that they switched to, and that's why he wants to work with them, or that they have various styles they can do well - otherwise FEH!

Saw them at the O2 and at the aftershow and man...they are one fun band to watch.. My wife and I never stopped dancing all night and let me tell you for my wife to dance at all is almost unprecedented!

And how cool are they?!

Downloaded a couple of tunes off iTunes for work and will invest in an album too, but I expect the live setting is where they shine best.

And yeah, those guitarists f*ckin' "BURN"

I was very surprised when they said they were from Texas...They sure don't sound much like Pantera or ZZ Top!

Get their music for free and legally. Join emusic (http://www.emusic.com) and you get lots of free downloads, 50 I think. I recommend the live album. Especially an extended band intros to the tune of Soul Power.

You have to register your credit card and choose the number of downloads you are entitled to monthly. But it's not charged for the first month (as you have free downloads) and you can cancel it. There's also Sheila E & Rhonda Smith on there, but sadly, no Prince. I got some old Pete Escovdo stuff from there. If you name a friend they get a free download bonus. There's also loads of P-Funk.

Either or. Prince doesn't exactly have a history of doing acts any favours by helping them out.
