Yeah, well I've seen y'all discuss Funkadelic here,
but I pointed out this particular song because,
as I child, one of my older cousins who lived with us would play this album, & at the time I loved this song.
As I grew older, I became more impressed with the music quality.
But, as I just recently uncovered this album from my stash,
I was also reminded of the great lyrics underneath.

For me,
its one of those songs,
as great as I thought it was,
just seems to get even better as time goes by.

No you're all wrong. eek

The original lp version of Slop was recorded in 1973. Mike joined the band in '74. Eddie Hazel is not playing on these sessions either; he was "on hiatus". The known (and credited) guitarists are Garry Shider and Rob Bykowski. Garry plays the first guitar part and usually does so live. Mike plays the second part that leads into a blistering solo.

usually Mike starts the solo and Garry joins in toward the second solo, if you're talking about them performing it live..

Not the solo the FIRST LEAD guitar part. It's Garry. They'll even start it with Mike not even plugged in. eek .

Newberg? The reference was specific to live version they released on Hardcore Jollies. The mix, at least, doesn't sound like Newberg.

If u read my my post, when refering to the live version on the Jollies album, NOT the the Slop album, which is the version I prefer, I stated that it SOUNDED like Mike to me. Although I could tell it was two different players. I KNEW neither one was Hazel. The second part, which was the most fluid and flashiest, beacuse of that, always stood out the most to me. THAT'S the part that I always thought was Hampton. I never thought of Gary as a lead player although I've seen him play some lead melody lines in concerts several times. But he's NEVER been on the level of Eddie, Mike and certainly not Blackbyrd. I saw Parliament live back in 78 when I was a kid with my older cousin but the only cats that I knew besides when Bootsy would guest was Bernie and Mike. Hazel wasn't at the show that I attended. I knew when Mike joined so he definately wasn't on board when the o.g. Cosmic version came out. I was alwyas refering to the Harcore version. I forgot all about the white cat that was on board during Standing and shit. Again, he too never left an impression on me, so he always slips my mind. But hey,...that's just me.

OK this got real confusing. Let's straighten it out.
On COSMIC SLOP the album, the track "Cosmic Slop" is Garry Shider (first lead) Ron Bykowski (second lead and solo).
The live version of "Slop" on HARDCORE JOLLIES is Gary, again, on first lead then Mike Hampton. As far as I know "Slop" played live has always featured Garry starting it off then it's usually Mike Hampton who takes over the lead (depending if he shows up). Here in LA, I've also seen Rickey Rouse and Eric McFadden do Mike's part when he is MIA.

Bottom line: No Hazel on these versions of 'Slop", but I'm sure he's played on it.

That's what I said from the giddyup; that it SOUNDED like Mike to me on Jollies. The second lead was the only part I was refering to. The first lead part was always cool too. Actually I like the TONE better. That's Gary...then cool. The second lead, ever since I was a kid, was the part that I always paid attention to the most. Because as I stated earlier, it was the flashiest. So that was the part I was most interested in learning first. Having learning all of the leads that I dug the most by Funkadelic cats, Hazel being my most beloved, I knew who was who as far as I cared about. Being that Mike had his moments on Funkadelic records starting from the mid 70's,, I was never really crazy about Mike's playing. He was a little too Zappa-ish for me. I loved Frank but not Mike's version of that style. Even live, I just wasn't into his phrasing. Never really dug his versions of Maggot Brain either. He needs to leave that alone, really. Mike to me, and I have stated this a few times on here in the past, lacks "soul" in his playing. That combined with his choice of tone....Ironically, his second lead on Cosmic on the Jollies album is my favorite recorded lead that he has done with them. I've stated this on here several times in the past years as well....besides Hazel, who's really the only guitarist in the Mob that I ever really gave a fuck about, Dwayne Blackbyrd is the best guitarist out of this camp of recent years. I favor him waaaaay over Hampton. And it's Blackbyrd who is exceptional LIVE with the All Stars. The cat can blaze and at the same time, he has "soul". Don't twist my term of "soul" with soul music. That is NOT what I'm talking about. Hendrix, Santana, E.Van Halen, Vai,,...they all have soul in their playing. As much as I always dug Randy Rhoads, he never displayed soul. Although very fluid, that's where Van Halen had an up on him because Eddie would through in some funk licks in the mist of his leads. Randy could never fuck with that type of phrasing. These are all examples of my thing with Hampton, overall.

CS, the album, becomes a notable point in the PARLIAMENT-FUNKADELIC legacy. My opinion is they smoothed things out into an r&b unit, as opposed to psychedelic blues-rock. This transition period lasts throughout '74 and carries over to Casablanca for UFTDS and back to Westbound for SOTV. Hazel's presence is felt on the writing end, but he plays on few of these tracks. Still, he has set the standard for fill-in, Bykowski and his eventual replacements, Hampton and Byrd. Shider also begins to assert himself, whereas earlier he concentrated on vocals and rhythm parts.

Things settle down by'75 with the twin releases: Let's Take It To The Stage and Chocolate City (Parliament).
