Well, there's nothing wrong with comparing yourself to another artist especially if you've spent a lot of time with them creating and if you're peers.

Thats EXACTLY what I was thinking..people will always have something to say about an artist...how do we even know that this Van Hunt "reply" is authentic? It's from his blog and he even takes time to (occasionally) respond to mails from fans. I wish Princ would do that at times. The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

I was telling an artist friend about this little drama. My friend lives in NJ and immediately was like....ugh at the mention of Van Hunt. He said he did a live art show at one of Van Hunt's concerts. He was like..."that little prick so wants to be prince its sickening." LOL....
He said he's VERY arrogant and full of sh*t.

He said he's VERY arrogant and full of sh*t. What? Not OUR Van? Yeah, anyway the whole Prince comparison is so damn tired. It's like a stock part of every neosoul marketing package, the mythical Prince sound. There's no such thing. He's devoted himself to avoiding that.

NOTE: I've never heard of Van Hunt before this thread. I like the little I've heard.
Of course, he doesn't sound as nearly energetic and musically diverse as Jshua: http://mog.com/Jshua Now THAT guy has some serious skill and energy - and talent, of course.

i dont know who van hunt is but he certainly has the right to speak his mind if people have been bashing him. prince fans are annoying in their hero worship and superiority complex, not everyone is gonna hold prince up as the greatest thing to ever happen to music.sure he's had some great songs but he's also released alot of stuff i thought was bullshit and he's become pretty boring over the last 10 years or so.its also funny to me to see prince fans calling anyone arrogant, i mean really there's not many artists in history more arrogant than the little purple man. some of you need to come down off the high horse and realize that not every black musician with a guitar owe their existance to prince....prince is not even the originator of his own image, he's a jimi hendrix ripoff. [Edited 1/20/08 21:58pm] you go on any fansite of major pop stars you will find worshippers. It is not only Prince fans. I agree though when you say not every black man who plays a guitar owe it all to Prince as that must be frustration and annoying for the musician. As far as Prince being boring the past ten years, perhaps to some people, everyone has their time, especially over the course of a 30 year career. Van Hunt will hit his dry spell at some time as no one can stay perfect forever. I just hope he can handle criticism which will come when his writing is not up to par because he seems quite sensitive. [Edited 1/20/08 22:22pm]

As much as Blaque wants to act like folks here are just Prince worshipers on here.....man, prince gets a beat down to me in comparison to how other fans are towards their fav artist. Van still looks like overly sensitive to me.

He said he's VERY arrogant and full of sh*t. Ha! Too funny. I read the original thread a few days ago and with the exception of a couple of posts what was said by fans was mostly positive or neutral. That being said, the long assed rant Van posted on his blog responding to the negative posts was just well ...kinda petty. As for Mr. Hunt's music -- he's a good musicican but what I've heard from him so far is just not my cup of tea. I think he had one song from the first album that was kinda of catchy. but the second album just came across as too Curtis Mayfield does NeoSoul/Rock to me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is a fansite, when you go to janet-xone, mj fansite, madonna, u2, you're going to find the same things, and if it bothers folks that much then they should avoid fansites period. As long as you are here, its cool to speak your mind, especially when you are right, but folks are never going to hate on Prince the way some people wish they would. Lauryn had fake locs too, and I've known a few women who rocked them for a minute. Mostly dudes have them for some reason, or at least it seems that way, and it's always these steroid freaks with mile long loc weaves looking like some kind of Nigerian Fabio. Then you have the "swishy" guys I always see with them. They love flipping those things around like teenage white girls. I imagine people go for them because of all the care associated with real ones, or real GOOD ones. Some can't be bothered with the rolling and twisting and what not and don't want to end up with one big loc or things living in them.

Van still looks like overly sensitive to me. Now see, I'm not really saying that, Rhonda. Only the fanbots get mad when they are called fanbots. If it doesn't apply, there's no reason to react. I just think that what he said, while perhaps hastily posted, was blown out of proportion by people on here. The only real mistake he made in my opinion was clarifying anything he said. Let people think what they want about you. It matters not. Anyone that says something that isn't all praise about Prince around here gets blasted and then made out to be the starter of it all. I've been to lots of fansites and I don't think Prince gets any worse of a beatdown than a lot of other artists. The problem is his fans have elevated him to a status above what he actually is. There seems to be no in-between among the "die-hard" Prince fans. You must either love him and all he does or "you don't get him". That's some bullshit. If Prince is not the pinnacle of your musical experiences, why should you hold him in such high regards? It doesn't matter if you're on a Prince fansite or anywhere else. He said some positive things that got glazed over as if he said nothing. People go straight for the drama.

Van Hunt never got back to me, most likely because his argument was weak and everything I said was true.
I hate these new artists who think they're so great, when in reality they couldn't wear the jock strap of those who came before them. Nobody is saying "I'm going to be the next Van Hunt!" That's ridiculous, unless you'd want to be invisible. For such a no name, no talent artist to say anything negative against Prince, he's got to be the dumbest person ever. At least have the tunes "up on the shelf" and a long, varied and important career to back up your words. You know that guy is weak when he has to resort to "Prince invited me to play for him" arguments. You can tell he's not knowledgeable about Prince, because anyone who's a Prince fan knows you can "judge" his output by what he's released. Just because he picks 10 songs you don't like and puts them on an album doesn't mean he doesn't write great songs anymore. Van Hunt is a meaningless musician, and he's even more stupid than he is a bad musician, so I simply called him out. And he lost the argument. Come on, he's writing a MySpace blog for Christ sake. Imagine if Prince was writing a blog telling people his feelings and how "some artist" wasn't any good. That's only something a new age so-called "artist" would do. Van Hunt would be lucky to sell out a county fair... "Don't you think one of the charms of marriage is that it makes deception a necessity for both parties?"

Van Hunt is the Michael Bay of Music, while Prince is Woody Allen. Only dumb people would prefer a Michael Bay production, whereas the refined, intelligent and sophisticated person (like me) would prefer Woody. That's the best analogy I can come up with at this time, 6:30am, working off of no sleep. Because I am a machine. Time for a sugar free Red Bull. Van Hunt's work has the quality of a Michael Bay production with the commercial success of a Uwe Boll masterpiece. Ok I’m lost
I didn’t read where he made a big comparison, he simply stated that Prince willed himself to be a great songwriting because he had to in order to be relevant, he even went on to clarify that prince no longer has to be relevant and he follows his own muse. And still practice music like a 20-year-old music student. He didn’t even attack the org as a whole, it seemed to be more aimed at the Van Hunt is Prince’s son thread, which I guess he has a right to respond. But whatever I’m not going to be his cheerleader, I just can’t believe this thread blew up like this. And I am going to repeat a previous point I was trying to make, it is funny that a artist responds to a negative thread and folks are all huff and puff about it, and the artist whom the site is dedicated to is filing a lawsuit against it. Prince never took the time to give a Q&A to explain his actions or anything. In fact someone said that Van is on myspace writing blogs as if to discredit him, but Prince actually hit the studio and wrote a damn song dissing the shit out of the people who run fan sites! I just find it all kind of ironic, we have to put things in perspective at some point. Is Van Hunts blog really that big of a fucking deal?
