Guitarist Larry Mitchell

He first came to my attention via a Guitar World feature back in the late 80s/early 90's. He cited Prince as an influence.

Thanx. Larry has a nice tone and nice vibe.

What model Ibanez is that in the video?

It's kind of a pre-cursor to that Andy Timmons kewl Strat tone also on youtube.

And now: Rare Jimi.

I'll have to try and slip away at NAMM and catch one of his demoes.

The Dan Reed Network is an interesting choice.
Not too many folks seem to be aware of this 80s era multi-racial Funk/Rock outfit.

We used to play in Vancouver with the Dan Reed Network. We used to hang out at the bar and drink Corona at The Cotton Club. Awesome group.

And now in yet another edition of Rare Jimi, here's JHE doing "Dear Mr Fantasy" by Traffic.

That's Tony Lewis on drums, he played with Arto Lindsay, Defunkt, Jean Paul Bourelly, and a lot of M Base/Black Rock Coalition groups in the late 80's - early 90's...

BTW, this footage is from a video called "The Crunch - Live" (it was available in Japan and Germany), although I've also seen it as "Christmas in Brooklyn, 91"...footage came from a Christmas Eve '91 show that featured The Crunch with TM Stevens and Larry Mitchell, along with Bernie Worrell, Defunkt, Eric Gales Band, Eddie Hazel, Stevie Salas and Jean Paul Bourelly...

I believe he's the one in the middle.
He's gone the trendy bald-headed route.

I consider Larry a friend an have known him for years...not the easiest for me to keep up with but one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. I actually sought Larry out after reading his profile in Mike Varney's Spotlight column. I had the opportunity to take a few lessons with him...I wasn't quite ready to study that seriously at the time LOL! He's a great teacher.

The best thing to me about Larry as a player is his ability to play melodically and tastefully. No doubt that he can seriously rip but he can really lock into a groove as well. That can't be said about a lot of other players that emerged out of the "shred" camp. Truthfully I never understood how that tag even applied to him. I'd been to a bunch of his NYC gigs back in the day & he always held his chops in check.

Anyway... check out any of his cd's I highly recommend them. If your taste run a bit heavier try and track down his 1st cd "Larry Mitchell" or even his 2nd "Mind, Body, Soul".

Does he have any shredding material?

I knew a photographer who said he knew Larry and he had a ton of unreleased Prince stuff on tape.

I am trying to remember if this was from Prince directly, but anyway he said he had a ton of outtakes.

So I take it he was a huge Prince fan.
Music is the best...

Well what do you consider shredding? That Term is way played out & no self-respecting grown ass man would be caught dead using it. No offense....LOL!

Larry's 1st album is about the closest he comes to that genre and it was released around the tail end of that whole movement. It's all instumental tunes. He does have a high level of technical proficiency on the instrument yet the songs themselves are more melodic, rhythmic & hooky than some of his contemporaries. Don't expect late 80's Paul Gilbert or Rusty Cooley type playing.

I don't consider him a shredder, but that's just my opinion. But folks who dig that type of thing might enjoy his first two albums.

Lol.....I would call Eddie Hazel's performance on his classic P-Funk joint shredding.

Yep! He's a pretty big Prince fan...at one gig Larry asked me if I dug the Prince song he did during the set. I was confused since the only new song during the set was a Blues tune on which he also sang.. which he almost never does..so I said "What Prince song?" He says it was a tune from the Interactive CD-rom..."The Ride?" I'm like...oh..since I didn't have the disc yet.
LOL! A really good cover BTW..even though the vocal wasn't exactly stellar...LOL.

I doubt that he had any sort of inside hook-up for the boots. They proably came through the usual channels.
