ThreadBare said: Stokely -- he's inventive and has crazy range.
BeBe Winans -- tone, power and really cool phrasing. Nat "King" Cole -- smoothness, enunciation and nuance Terence Trent D'arby -- TTD/Sananda has so much grit and sweetness, I think his is rock music's perfect voice. Truly. Stevie Wonder -- clarity, range and emotion Maxwell -- A killer falsetto and an awesome ability to convey feeling. D'angelo -- Bruh's voice just smolders. Doesn't move me the same way, but my female friends love him. And you hear a lot of church in his stuff. He just needs to study Cole's enunciation and quit mumbling. Donny Hathaway -- Oh my gosh. Donny wrote the book on soul singing. Countless contenders to his throne have studied that book well (Doyle Bramhall II, Harry Connick Jr., Kenny Lattimore, etc.) Sting -- it's his accent, mostly. But dude's phrasing is really cool. Marvin Sapp -- goodness gracious. Born to sing gospel. I'd hate to follow him in concert. David Hollister -- Power and nuance. Anthony Hamilton -- What vibrato and feeling. Soul. Al Green -- This brother. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. "Change is Gonna Come." Let's just leave it at that, shall we? [Edited 1/12/08 18:39pm] i'll add a couple 2 ur list marvin teddy and phillip bailey man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Well a few that i didnt see listed
Johnny Mathis alot of people forget him mainly because of Nat King Cole, but Johnny is pretty amazing in his vocals Morten Harket (lead singer of a-Ha) 25 years later this guy has not lost a step, and of course still owns the guiness record for longest note on record at 21 seconds, and its not one of those "pro tools" notes. Possibly the best male vocalist in the pop/rock field Russell Hitchcock- lead singer of Air Supply Dennis Deyoung- former co-lead singer of Styx "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Elvis Presley (One of the great soul singers imo)
James Brown Louis Armstrong (Soul personified) TTD Roy Orbison - Not mentioned so far? Johnny Cash - Ditto Bob Dylan (later years where he got that 'croak' ) David Bowie John Lee Hooker (Another Great Soul) Muddy Waters Son House (For 'John the Revelator' if nothing else) Tom Jones (Best white British soul singer?) Prince Wilson Pickett Freddie Mercury (Very few have his range and ability to make you feel great listening to him) Jim Morrison (Cool, weird and strangely sleazy all at once) Little Richard Frank Sinatra Mario Lanza Scott Walker (the Dark Angel) Brian Wilson Robert Plant (Especially in recent years) Bob Marley Burning Spear Horace Any Marvin Gaye Curtis Mayfield Stevie Wonder Jimmy Rushing And many more [Edited 1/15/08 13:34pm]

Wayne Cooper from Cameo Otis Stokes from Lakeside Philip Bailey from Earth, Wind, and Fire Sylvester . . . He's the dude who sings the falsetto parts? Love 'im! Yep, that's him. There's nothing better than a great falsetto. Of course, a great falsetto means nothing without great music behind it and Lakeside definately delivered that. Andy is a four letter word.

Lol.....that's wrong. Why? Is he too feminine to be considered a great male vocalist? You're so homophobic. Next you're going to tell me Prince can't be considered a great female vocalist because she's so butch. [Edited 1/19/08 16:07pm]
