I also doubt whether or not the two had a fling. They definitely hung out abit during this time - turning up to one anothers concerts and such, and have always had a mutual respect for one another - but i think it just fits nicely into the tabloid portrayal of Madonna sleeping around with music types. It also fits into the image of Prince as an uncontrollable womaniser, conquering every attractive woman he ever shared a room with, but there's actually no evidence for it at all. If they'd had a fling then I doubt if they would still get on as well as they do.
P.S. I read the story about Prince "patching up her hole" years before Taraborelli's book came out, so he must have just recycled it.
