Great question, brings to mind many, i will post some pretty recent ones from the last 10 years, and also some WHY NOT's on DVD!
Elton John 60- his 60th garden concert and his 60th birthday, nothing missed in this show, everything included, two discs, almost 6 hours of stuff, Elton performing tracks he almost never does, plus dvd of extras of peformances never seen , a true gift to his fans. Girls Aloud- wembley arena 2006, the UK's most successful girl group of all time puts on a perfect show, they can actually sing and keep you interested and look good, tough to do both. Rick Springfield live in Rockford- excellent 2 hour show from 2005 released through his website first, Rick kicks ass on stage and shows how to be a real rock star, super quality sound considering its an indie release. Duran Duran- Live From London- recorded on the Astronaut Tour, this will most likely the last time all members will be seen on a stage again, Duran Duran sounding amazing, great set list too Heart- Alive in Seattle- Rocks best women hit the stage, from 2002, Ann Wilson shows why she is the best female rock voice of all time, super tight band, some material in this show has never surfaced yet on any album STYX-One with Everything- Performed with CYO, the contemporary youth orchestra, whats better than seeing KIDS playing instruments!! Styx makes an actual ROCK show out of this, which in the past, orchestra performances by bands like Pink Floyd and YES have been boring, styx shows life and what rock is about! from 2006, styx also show that they are the only band that can pull off a live version of "I am the Walrus" Bon Jovi-the Crush tour from 2000, another great performance from the jersey band, possibly their best show ever, including a spectacular "slow reading" of RUNAWAY, and as always a perfect set list. a-Ha live at Vallhall Homecoming- a-ha are no one hit wonders except in america, this show from 2001 was a-Ha's first in Norway since 1994 when they split to work on solo material, lead singer Morten Harket has not lost anything in his voice, possibly the best male voice in pop music in the last 25 years. a-Ha rolls out tons of their UK hits and new songs, great extras include videos, and a tv performances and a 30 minute interview with the band. Norah Jones- live in New Orleans- from 2002, just a great simple show, piano, drum, bass type set up, Norah and her band show how musically tight they are, since they have played together since the later 90's, this show taped at the House of Blues in new orleans. OK some why nots, a big one would be BILLY JOEL 12 gardens, one of the best albums of all time was released by Billy in 2006, but sony held back on the DVD release due to.....stupidity. And some things that need to be on DVD.....
Classic stuff like Rick James, Mary Jane Girls, Elton John (live at the troubador 1970) Billy Joel (live from long island 1980) Harry Chapin (live at the Bottom Line 1980) Prince (really anything, at this point) John Mellencamp (same as prince) Inxs (final tour with Michael in 1997, there are boots of shows, so i know they were recorded) "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F | |
