Jazz heads, I need your insights on Weather Report OK, I'm trying to explore Weather Report's work. I've got Heavy Weather, but where should I go from here? Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Stick with the early records, when they were young, vibrant.
Don't forget to start with older Jazz, Miles, Coltrane, etc... All you others say Hell Yea!!

Hey Lammastide. Haven't been around for a minute.. But if u trying to really get into Weather Report you've started at one of their hottest albums "Heavy Weather". They have a live album called "8:30" which is hot. "Night Passage" is another good album. I would tell you that their albums all have different nuances. The post "Jaco Pastorius" albums are hot as well. I always liked "Procession". Nice to see someone delving into real musicians! Unfortunately we lost Joe Zawinul last year. What a great keyboard/synth player he was. What a choice of notes and harmony he possessed!

The first two albums are as good as music is going to get.
The rest, sans for a few later tolerable works like "Black Market" and "Heavy Weather" is just commercial instrumental music. I love Joe's and Wayne's best work, and they are both geniuses on their own right, but Weather Report did also some really bad music during the later years. But then again, they were making money and if you gotta sustain a lifestyle I guess you'll eventually have to go down that route. An ARP modular doesn't come cheap, nevermind two.

I wasn't comfortable recommending those albums to someone who was starting with HW. The eponymous debut, LIVE IN TOKYO and Body Electric are all superb, but more in a experimental vein. As per your "bad music during the later years" comment, the proceedings became dominated more and more by Zawinul's synths, Jaco's histrionics and Shorter's composed and played in a rapidly diminishing capacity. Things blossomed a bit with a new rhythm sectioin: Omar Hakim and Victor Bailey , but Shorter's interest could not be sustained. test

Odd. I just noticed I used an expression up there that would indicate Joe would be still alive. Guess I'm not myself used either to seeing the last greats go.

Happily I saw Joe's band on their last run thru LA; being a few months before he passed. His big band treatment of WR themes is superb! test

Don't forget to start with older Jazz, Miles, Coltrane, etc... Agree on both counts.... And adding Thelonius Monk to the list. "Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive."
