Mariah At Odds With L.A. Reid Over New Single?

All types of MiMi news today. Sources tell The YBF that Mariah’s brand new single is a track named “I’m That Chick You Like”. L.A. Reid very recently had the folks at Def Jam vote on 2 singles of hers, and “I’m That Chick” won. It’s a mid-tempo record, and the date it’s impacting radio is still TBD. However, sources say Mariah isn’t feeling that track for her lead single and is hell bent on preventing it from being released first. And L.A. only threw the track in the ring just to prove a point. Even though the lead single has been chosen, we’ll see who actually has the say in the end when her first single hits the airwaves.

"I'm The Chick You Like"?? disbelief doesn't sound too promising.

"it's a midtempo record"

Of course it is.Today's R&B artists don't know any other tempo lol

This is what i mean, Mariah is never gonna do something different. Whether this is a rumour or not just that it is a song going on the album its more of this "mid-tempo" stuff she has been doing for over a decade and its really run its course. My guess is they wanna go mid-tempo because the only two singles that worked last time around were "we belong Together" and "Dont forget About Us" which were the same song, as for "Shake it off" it only worked because it was the follow up to "we Belong together" so that was its reason for success. Its gonna be that same ass lazy beat, im guessing she even says something like "we belong together" in the lyrics to remind people. Its a formula, no one is shaking shit up. So far im not impressed with what im hearing from the "divas" and their "new ground"

Shake it off' had fans, alot of non Mariah fans, I hope it really is "part 2" next level Mimi, That was the first album that she really broke her old formula, it didnt sound like a Mariah album, not a single MOR ballad anywhere and she sang like soul singer.

I really hope though they didnt forget (or maybe it was just a few of us) but the heart of that album and what made it so listenable was the soul tracks ...tracks 4 onwards excluding Too floor and Get yo number.

the JD tracks were added by request of the label after it was recorded and during, imagine what the real vision for it was and the tracks those replaced (ie When I feel it) Sad but her best work wont come until she's irrelevant and doesnt have to care about sales, however she knows how to make a good pop/r&b album, just for fans like us, we been there with her, but these new and some young fans its all new..

Every pop artist must make some concessions to their vision if they wish to maintain their popularity.

I think for her fans she has definitely made a longlasting creative mark. I love so many of her songs, I love her voice...nothing is going to change that. I think maybe you are speaking more of artistic integrity, i.e. completely maintaining her vision with a project.

The problem is I think Mariah has gotten hooked on the commercial success. She was taught from the beginning that it's basically her sole purpose.

As a mariah fan from before day one, Mariah will always be someone that is a let down with her albums, and her music. She still has yet to create that IT album which is scary since she is 18 years into her career, but she hasnt done it. As big as her sales and singles have been they have also been forgettable for the most part, Mariah is that person that always gives you 80%, she has the talent and potential but never puts it into practice all the way. MIMI though her commercial comeback was a let down, it was like a step back once again, it was like an artist afraid of not being successful so she said "i'll sing whatever", and with the exception of a few good performances on the record, Mariah's stronger material will never be pushed. Tracks like "Subtle Invitation" or "My Saving Grace" should be lead singles, she should be dictating at this point in her career rather than following as she so often does. Mariah has lost "vision" to maintain this "commercial success" which at this point seems totally forced.

Mariah defined herself as a superstar pop artist from day one. If she wanted to release songs like Subtle Invitation or My Saving Grace as lead singles, she should save herself the money and just release an album. Those songs would go nowhere fast and she knows it.

lowkey

im not a mariah fan but i dont have a problem with any artist sticking to what works for them. i think it would be dumb for her to change what she's been doing very well for her entire career.she may be very happy in her little niche and her fans enjoy it. i've never felt an artist has to push envelopes in order to be considered 'real' artists, if its not them then it will come off as fake. i seriously cant see mariah doing anything other than what she's always done, thats the mid-tempo hiphop beats, throw in some collabos with rappers, a few power ballads, short dresses, superficial persona, ect, ect

You constantly state this about Mariah but you should be clear that this is your opinion as many of her fans would and have disagree(d). As a fan from day one maybe you still don’t get her.

Actually she would be better respected, and not by the public, her fans. If her fans voted, those would have been singles, as would cuts from early albums like "Vanishing" and "the wind" its ironic how Mariah someone that has had so many hits , when you ask her fans name your top 10 mariah songs, almost none of them were ever singles. So commercial success is cool, but there is a line that she needs to cross that she and many others are afraid to cross, which would be the artistic line.

Girls has self esteem issues lol Yeah as a fan, I can edit out some tarcks from each album and left with a great body of work, I guess she could be more than a Whitney or Beyonce, she could if she wanted I think be more remebered along side Minnie Ripperton, or even now be Erykah Badu's peer, Where's her "Songs in the key of life", now I maybe shooting too high, but she is def holding out, Maybe her body of work will hold up with time ..Led Zeplin were considered safe/boring/commercial puppets in their day(with the then 'cool trendy'media and crowd, but with time all you heard was the songs, maybe thats why Mariah has such 'stark' production for R&B/pop records most of it is vocal tracks where most would have more music production..., the best old songs are the ones without such heavy production from the era of music (Prisoner been one of the exceptions)

and no I didnt compare her to Stevie or Zeplin.

Well, yes, poll the hardcore fans of ANY artist and you are probably going to find a similar result: a lot of fans prefer obscure album tracks to singles. But if you ask those fans, "Do you think this track should have been released as a single?", the answer you will often get is NO. It all depends on how you ask.

Mariah is at a point in her career where she could release albums without singles and do respectably.

Well the funny thing is off her last album "Shake it Off" was at the bottom of "what should be a single" being polled by her most respected site (that she even uses) Mariah Daily, and My Saving Grace was near the top.

Well that poll is an anomaly then. Most of her fans have a commercial mindset when you ask them about SINGLES. Most of the fans of ANY major star have a commercial mindset when you ask them that question. Seriously, they may love the song but they are also realistic about its chances for commercial success.

And WTF was My Saving Grace doing on that poll, anyway? It's not even a song off Mimi.

But thats my issues with Mariah since day one, fear of taking a chance, which alot of artists have, she can write her own ticket at this point, even she flops, she isnt going anywhere, shes freaking Mariah Carey, she can dictate change, someone of her power, can really do anything, shes got the fan base, even in her commerical failures she still sells more than most artists do with hits. The problem is with her and many others, they just dont wanna go against the grain.

Some hardcore Mariah fans live for that self help stuff she does, Hero was their calling card..I hate that song, so Glad she does too...

Shake it off was the best JD track for me on that album...And heaps of people who dont like her liked that song, it was made for radio! Its "Ignition' 'Confessions pt2" all rolled into one...

My Saving Grace, is an album track, that would never hit 2007/8, just like Fly like a bird went nowhere...Gospel songs are tricky anyway, with the whole religious esp Christian element, some reporter asked her in europe if she was trying to convert the youth of the world to christianity when mimi came out because of that one album track..and they weren't asking in a nice way

Since we on the critism tip, only thing for that she could take next level is lyrics..That I know she could really hit out the ball park, she's quite articulate, more than some of her songs show..then again thats also on purpose, she wants songs/lyrics people all over the world can sing, even without a wide grasp of the english language, which is pretty cool...she almost lost them with "Elusive" lol

rolleyes

I just find that Mariah has a very diverse group of fans. They’re young, they’re old(er), they like hip hop, they despise hip hop, they think JD’s great, they can’t stand him, they love Hero and butterflies and Hello Kitty and don’t mind being called lamb or they love fine wine, haute couture, a good pair of stilettos and will slap you twice if you refer to them as any sort warm and fuzzy creature. The one thing they have in common is they love Mariah, so one fan’s crap track is another fan’s favorite. A single release versus a filler...it's up to the fan.

Well i have always loved Mariah, and as with any artist im going to put things down that she does especially when i know and others know she could be doing something better. I mean just look at someone like Prince and how he gets loved and hated for his work that he does by his fans. So with Mariah i have always taken that approach, and at this point i always know how her albums will be, very predictable, so i stop listening to the album and just care how hot she is going to look, im serious about that no joke, where as there was a time where i could care about both with her, the music is almost non-existent at this point because its so predictable.

I find her look predictable more than anything. The music not as much. She surprised me a little on Mimi. But I don't think predicatability is necessarily a bad thing--unless the music just sucks, of course. With some artists you pretty much know what you’re going to get but if you like that, then it’s no problem.

I guess this album will be the most telling since she claims it’s her favorite but if LA is putting the kibosh on things who knows what we’ll get in the end.

But what if there isn't more? What if she's already scraped the bottom of the barrel? This is pretty much it folks. I used to think there was more from another certain female pop star then it just struck me, "this is pretty much it:".

True she could never please all her fans, although I have a friend who's a writer said that her work is very cohesive, that she has actually crafted her own sound (mostly through vocal styling and vocal production and tracking)

I had another muso friend who hated her and when "When you believe" came out, he was fan of the original version said "when she starts her verse somehow she turned the whole thing into a Mariah Carey song" he meant it as a diss, but I said thats probaly a huge compliment that you can make anything sound like your own and no one elses, even if some dont like, which is actually a good thing right in music? to polarise people, if some "hate it!!" it means others will feel the complete opposite, better than ok by most..

This is interesting to me because this is why she appeals to me. Some songs are great, some aren’t, but once Mariah gets her hands on it, there’s just something about it... I was listening to a playlist of hers on a long drive awhile back and I hadn’t listened to much Mariah at the time, but that’s when I realized, she has her own sound. I can’t define it like a Sade sound, but she has something going on that’s not really like anyone else.

This is partly why I don’t have a tremendous amount of fear when I hear she’s working with people I’d rather her not.

she's gone for a style as opposed to fashion, which is good, there is no expectation! Imagine Gwen Stefani getting her outfits wrong as many times as Mariah? or having the same hair since 95, she'd be over!

"its what's underneath that really counts here and she knows it..

Not even Andre Leon Talley could curve her ways, bless her for sticking to what she wants, I think if Vogue and the whole fashion world declared that short skirts and high heels were the worst thing you could wear, she wouldnt stop! Its almost punk'ish of her biggrin

lol She's that friend that you just can't tell her what to wear. She's going to wear what she wants regardless!

Altho I don't mind her casual outfits like in Aspen and stuff. I think she looks rather smart and fashionable. I've never seen so many people have a problem with tight jeans in my life. I've seen tighter.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off
