Who is Dorothy Ashby? Can anyone advise me more on the work of Dorothy Ashby? I have recently acquired a copy of 'Soul Vibrations' and 'The Windmills Of Your Mind'. The latter being a lovely piece of music.
Any Ashby heads who can advise to further exploration? There's Joy In Expatriation.

Dorothy was in a class by herself.
She and her husband, John, were good friends of my mom and dad. Dorothy played at their wedding, John was my father's best man. My parents were married in June of 1960. Her music was/is amazing. She is the harpist on "If It's Magic" from Songs In the Key of Life, but that song doesn't showcase her jazz chops. She died of cancer in the mid-80's, I believe. My parents lost touch with her after she moved to California, although she did return to Detroit shortly before she passed to be honored by my music fraternity, Delta Omicron, of which she and my mom were members.

whoa. i learn something every day. I'm gonna do some homework on this woman. She did alot of session for Earth Wind & Fire, Charles Stepney, Curtis Mayfield among many people in the 70s. Her discography is impressive to say the least. She put a different and fresh spin on "Fusion". I'm glad her name got mentioned in theOrg.
