La La (Means I Love You) Prince or J5 version?

Wtf. I just realised J5 sings the original version of this. I got the Diana Ross Presents J5 CD recently and this track came on and I was like " eek eek ... confused sad sad " coz I thought Prince did it.

What version do you prefer? Gah I can't choose.. The J5 version is so adorable though. love

To be really real, me too. There are Delfonics songs I like more than "La La" even though it is damn near their signature hit.

All other version are just okay compared to The Delfonics' original. hmph! They're certainly not bad at all, but I'm on cloud9 with The Delfonics. To me, they're the best of the Philly soul sound. Nothing against Gamble & Huff's work, but Thom Bell created vocal magic with them.

In a related note ... The Jackson 5ive used to actually open up for the Delfonics back in 68 on the chitlin' circuit (before they were signed to Motown) at the Apollo, Regal, Uptown, Howard ect. One of the brothers actually said the 'Foncis was his favorite group.

The Delfonics
“Can You Remember,” one of the album’s William Hart/Thom Bell-penned originals, ended up redone by the Jackson 5 on their Motown debut album. The Delfonics had already crossed paths with the pubescent Gary, Indiana, lads prior to their Motown crowning.

“we used to do a lot of shows at the Regal Theater in Chicago, and at the Capitol Theater there,” William Hart recalls. “I remember they didn‘t have a place to change clothes, and we had a big trailer and all. They were opening up the shows for us at that time, the Jackson 5. And they thought that was nice of me, to let them come in and change, I remember Michael saying, ‘Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!’ I told them, ‘Hey, one day I may need you, who knows? I‘ve got a lot of faith in you guys.’”

The connection paid off-the J5 subsequently covered “LA-La” and “Ready Or Not Here I Come (Can‘t Hide From Love)” from the Delfonics songbook as well. “They got on The Ed Sullivan Show, and they asked the Jackson 5, who was their favorite group? And they said, ‘The Delfonics,’ laughs Hart. “They should have said the Temptations! But they were young, and just being honest.”

You know the track "Can You Remember" on that same disc (number 4 I believe) is also a Delfonics original.

Believe it or not..

I dug Prince's version of this tune also..

Sounds like he recorded it somewhere around 78

Added Chante Moore on the backgrounds just to upgrade the tune I guess biggrin

J5 isn't even in the mix for me! As much as I LOVE Prince, I still can't decide between his version and the Delfonics! I guess IF I was forced to, I might go with the Delfonics...the originals....

The Delfonics. I will admit, I never knew the J5 did a cover of this song but I'm sure The Delfonics still did it better. As much as I love Prince, this is one of Prince's worse covers, hell his worse songs. His version makes me wanna barf Too damm sweet for me. ill
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The Delfonics first, then Prince. I don't like The Jackson Five's version.

Gotta be The Delfonics version for me but I also like Todd Rundgren's version from the album "A Wizard, A True Star".
