What a creative hot streak Marvin Gaye was on in the 1970s: classic albums What’s Going On, Trouble Man, Let’s Get It On and I Want You; two great live albums; and, when he seemed to be losing commercial steam, up popped “Got To Give It Up,” a no. 1 smash.
Often missing from that list is the record that came towards the end of the decade: Here, My Dear, released in December 1978, a wrenching yet beautifully rendered chronicle of the end of his first marriage. With mixed reviews and no hit singles, the album was not a big seller.
Yet in the decades since Here, My Dear has become recognized as a masterpiece of romantic anguish. It’s also one of Marvin’s most influential recordings. Hear it in today’s young soul singers and in hip-hop's confessional raps. Listen to the many producers who obsess over every note. See it on the Rolling Stone and Mojo lists of Top Albums of All Time.
To honor this great work on the eve of its 30th anniversary, Hip-OSelect.com announces a 2-CD expanded edition of the album. Included in Here, My Dear: Expanded Edition is a newly remastered version of the original album, plus, on the second disc—cleverly titled Hear, My Dear—all of the LP’s tracks newly mixed in old-school style (no overdubs) by select artists and producers. Marvin fans from Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse, Nas), to Prince Paul (De La Soul), from Easy Mo Bee (Tupac, Alicia Keys) to Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson & James Posyer (The Roots, Jill Scott) dug deep into the tracks, delivering previously unreleased alternate versions that are new visions of the songs. (See track list.)
Hear demo vocals and alternate instrumentation. Spoken word passages left off the LP. Longer mixes with sick breaks from the original multi-track master tapes.
That’s not all, as a bonus track rounds out each disc: “Ain’t It Funny (How Things Turn Around),” a posthumously released track now in undubbed form for the first time, a mix produced by P-Funk’s Bootsy Collins; and the rare, original 12-inch instrumental version of “A Funky Space Reincarnation.”
This extraordinary collection is housed in a deluxe digi-pak that features a reproduction of the original album cover art, scans of master tape boxes and memorabilia from around the world. Further complementing the set is a richly textured 28-page booklet, packed with full lyrics, an essay by Gaye biographer David Ritz, and two sidebar essays detailing the creation of the controversial cover art and the making of this edition. In true Hip-oSelect.com style, also included are comprehensive recording and musician annotations for the first time.
Hear Here, My Dear all over again—or discover a classic for the first time.

HIP-O SAYS… THERE’S MORE, MY DEAR: Cover illustrator Michael Bryan had previously done album covers for Rod Stewart, John Lennon and Bootsy. He left the music business shortly after Marvin’s LP was released. But you can see his work on movie posters from Robo Cop and Rush Hour 3, not to mention those cool images for Halo 3.

AND ONE MORE… The folks at Christian Dior didn’t sleep on Here, My Dear: “A Funky Space Reincarnation” was recently used for a hot international Dior perfume ad with Charlize Theron.

confused

Talk about misleading.

And I think its a waste of time and energy when young producers remix old school music. Whats the fuckin' point? Its perfect as it should be, it doesn't need to be modified.

No, this shit ain't getting my money or downlouding time. And no demos or outtakes either? Forget iiiiit, child rolleyes

They do say, in the article, that's it's remixed in old school style. It's says the 2nd disc actually features he alternate versions of the original tracks. The new producers are just mixing it, to make it into a track, I believe.

Remixers aside, it's worth it just have this shit remastered woot!

And looking at the list of remixers, they didn't "seem" to choose anyone who would be sacrilegious when it comes to Marvin. Besides, it does say "no overdubs" ... meaning no new instrumentation... just mixing. It still sounds promising. John Morales mixed the Love Man sessions and he did an excellent job IMHO... nod

I agree! Whether this edition has unheard, rare stuff or even remixes, I'm just glad this has finally got deluxe treatment. I hope it inspires a whole new generation of fans who might only remember the genius for What's Going On & Let's Get It On. I don't know whether or not I will cop it now, though!

The main reason why I've preordered it is because of not only the remastering, but the deluxe packaging and liner notes. Can't wait, man! The remixes are probably going to be good, especially ?uestlove's mix.

Yup pretty much. I'm not exactly thrilled about the way this is presented. But the choice of people they have selected gives me hope that the mixes won't be vomitrocious. Since none of these alternate versions have seen the light of day until now, it makes me believe that these people are truly only mixing the sessions to their liking... not remixing in the sense of adding some rapping here and drum tracks there. No overdubbing! And everything being used is from the original multi-track masters.

This is one of my all-time favorite albums. But I could care less what some shit modern artists have to say about mixing Marvin's tracks. Whether or not to order this all depends on how the remastering sounds. Anyone heard the tracks yet? The old CD master is okay, but if it has been significantly improved (a la Stevie's remasters), then I'm all over this shit!

Here's what Questlove has to say about his role in "remixing": In a nutshell, he says Motown is cheap and didn't have to spend a penny by asking artists like himself who would kill to have the opportunity to work with/own some Marvin masters instead of hiring studio engineers to do it.

i did nothing but engineer it.think james brown "in the jungle groove" album. personally those mixes are WAAAAAY better than the album versions.
(compare talking loud and soul power and ESPECIALLY funky drummer)
they are misleading yall by saying we "remixed" them. we engineered em...

think Kenny Dope with the j5/bt express shit.
--then again i can only speak for me
my project was ed townsend's vocal demo for "sparrow" in which you hear marvin obnoxiously chewing gum as he directs the band
--actually i added a lil joke i slipped past the motown cats in which marvin is having a one way conversation with an assistant engineer who is adjusting the mic before he sings in it:
marvin 1977-say man
?uesto-2007-hey mar (the sound of a soda tab opening) you want some of my fresca?
marvin- yeah...thanks man...thanks
?uesto 2007-solid

then townsend walks in the room and they speak about the background and some vocal ideas (ed does some singing which is so bad motown made me recall it to fade him out on the offensive notes.)

so basically
its a rough demo i mixed before marv added final vocals.
but you hear him direct the band
you hear banter tween him ed and me.

here's a review from an okayplayer who received it:
having just received this today and listened I can assure you all that there is nothing to worry about regarding the questionable second disc. There is no scratching, rapping, or shoutouts to be found. lol

Given the nature of Marvin's recording style, with countless takes, vocal tracks, and alt versions, there's plenty of material which allowed the producers to breathe new life into these songs while staying true to the output from the original sessions.

And, for the record, the Easy Mo Bee "I Met A Little Girl" mix is exquisite, as is Salaam's "Falling in Love Again" and well, pretty much everything else on here.

GOOD! Because we have to remember Easy Mo Bee did an interesting version of the Tempts' "Just My Imagination" and Salaam worked with Amy Winehouse so I never expected that (the scratching, rapping, etc.)

I think some of yall are getting confused by semantics.

The original meaning of remix is not composing a whole new instrumentation and only keeping the original vocals on top, but actually using what is already on the original multi track master tapes and readjusting levels, mutes and EQ etc...

That's what it appears is being done on the second disc from what they've said in the notes there.

There are probably a whole bunch of Marvin ad lib tracks on those tapes that we've never heard. Possibly other instrumental stuff that was muted in the original mixes too. I'm very interested in what they may have uncovered from this vault.

I'm also interested in what tonal variations they come up with by mixing using a more modern style ie tightening up the drums and beefing up the bass. Will be intriguing to hear if it works...

for the same reason folks dropped $30 for the deluxe/expanded editions of What's Going On, Let's Get It On, I Want You and In Our Lifetime. The fact that this album is remastered is truly worth it. There was really no point in name dropping all of those people who mixed these songs. They did a good job. The only complaint I have is that the drums are dropped out of the mix on too many songs... But the version of Anger? whooo worship
