You know, when I look at some of this vintage footage--it just amazes me how STIFF the audience is. . .I can't keep still listening to that!

I catch your drift. wink

More from "The Trio (w/Coleman Hawkins) along with Nat King Cole on vocals...

...Sweet Lorraine

In 1953, Nat King Cole said to Peterson, "I'll make a deal with you, Oscar. You don't sing and I won't play the piano." Peterson had just recorded his first album of vocals, accompanying himself on the piano. His voice sounded remarkably like Cole's and his piano style had also evolved so that it sounded close to Cole's work with Cole's own trio. The two jazz musicians agreed, and Oscar Peterson gave up singing, while Nat King Cole recorded piano-less vocals backed by huge orchestras.

Wow, didn't know that Oscar sang...I have to hear that!!!!

...It's probably Oscar Peterson Sings that they're referring to in the story.

Once you hear some of the tunes (Romance & With Respect to Nat) are the ones i've heard, it's obvious that Nat King Cole was his vocal model. That "agreement" was a good one for Oscar's sake (his singing is OK but nothing to write home about).

But Nat should've welched on that deal and continued playing the piano. confused

nod That's true, Nat's Very Underrated as Piano player, I guess because there was so much emphasis on his voice in later years...

i use to work for a company called Marquette Electronics and the owner Michael Cudahy (filthy rich ol' dude) often hired this trio to come and play at his private parties. I caught him and the hall one day and asked him if this were true and he told me to come to his office and he gave me a disc of this trio playing at one of his parties recorded on his home studio! eek

Awesome Trio! don't know if Herb is still around (always looked as if he would play his last note first) but peace to Ray Brown and Oscar, yeah if heaven has a band.....

btw, i was able to catch Ray on his final tour and at his age he was still doing things to make my jaw drop.

Great story. thumbs up!

Here's one from "The Trio"...

Awesome footage. it's funny to see that many people focused in on the music like that. i don't know what to say, it is kinda cool but bizzare at the same time. lol

Oh, btw, would you like a ticket to the ol' Geezer's Ball question

That's what Mr. Cudahy used to call it. lol

confuse Maybe it's because today's YouTube generation aren't satisfied being in the audience. They'd prefer to be the center of attention.

Anyway, damn all that "Geezer's Ball" B.S.

Oscar Peterson is one of those musicians I can just about never get tired listening to. It's really too bad because I still had some remote hope that maybe one day I'd be able to catch him in concert before he died sad but I guess I'll just have to take solace in his albums.

Now see, this is simply unfair. Wow, what a performance.

Oscar will be missed. Another link to jazz as a living, breathing art form gone.

Be well, and rest in peace.

Trickology

I just thought i'd mention this.

There was a TV special that was unorthodox in it's approach because there were i believe 3 pianists playing at once.

1. Oscar Peterson
2. Michel Legrand

And for the life of me I can't remember the third one. Maybe there wasn't a third one.

But this special was AMAZING at how they didnt even trip over each other and clutter when they were doing improvisations on standards.

If anyone has any clue where to get that I'd like a copy. I saw it on a music channel "Ovation" a long time ago. I don't think many people caught on to it. I believe it was filmed in Europe. It was professionally shot if that helps.

I can stump with ease with something like that. Because I am guessing if you didnt have OVATION you didn't see it! wink

ThreadBare

Almost a decade ago, as I left work late one night in Baltimore, I turned a corner downtown and stopped at an intersection. My radio was tuned to the classic jazz station, and I couldn't believe the music I was hearing. Piano playing, both stately and soulful, was wafting through my car. I couldn't believe how gorgeous it was. Mastery was evidenced by nuance at times, dazzling artistry at others.

When it was over, the announcer said: [i]"That was the Oscar Peterson Trio with 'The Canadienne Suite.'" I made it my business to track down a copy of that disc, and I didn't rest until I had it.

As I reminisce, I'm listening to Oscar's late-1990s disc with Ray Brown and Milt Jackson, "The Very Tall Band." The man was just amazing. We've lost a giant.
