I miss liner notes. It was cool opening up D'Angelo's "Voodoo" album and seeing liner notes. I guess most artists don't have a thought in their head worth writing down these days.

Are they really necessary? I mean at all?

Anyway, other than David Nathan's site(Soul Music) that has liner notes from Rhino's compilation/remastered album releases, I can't think of any. I'm sure there are,,or at least in the works. It woulda been cool to have such a site.

Well, yes I am having a bad day (or still recovering from very bad one from a week ago, this being the season for christmas parties and everything ). Why thank you for noticing, but this has nothing to do with it.
I was mainly referring here to what for instance Miles Davis felt about them, and why he wanted to get rid of the whole thing in the 60s. And so did a lot of other jazz musicians as well. I'd rather see much more written about the albums for instance on the internet (even on the artists' own webpages these days), but having some sort of "listening instructions" printed on the actual album is sort of unnecessary in my opinion. Especially if there's a lot of information about things that are mostly relevant during that specific time period - often the tone and the approach of commentaries on any cultural products might seem completely irrelevant, if not even completely nonsensical, to listeners of future generations. Commentaries, reviews and such tend to get dated a lot more effectively than the actual music itself.

actually i meant like "who played what" and that sort of thing...(maybe liner notes is the wrong phrase)...like for instance, i know there's a site some where that tells you what song has sampled another song, but isn't there a site where you can type a song or album name and find out who played guitar on "track 3" or piano on"track 7"?

Oh.
I just checked it out from various intenet sources (including the mighty Wikipedia), and the word "liner notes" are apparently also used these days for the production data and personnel information as well. Don't know, that's a bit odd to me personally - I've never seen them being referred as "liner notes" at least in technical terms for CD pressings. Maybe I'm just lagging a few decades behind. But you apparently weren't using the wrong word either. But yeah, I guess a site where you could check out the contirbutions of session musicians to, at least, some classic albums could be cool indeed.

track by track liner notes that describe the gestation of a recording can be fun to read and never get old. though they can also be quite boring and take away some of the mystique.

In that case, its...
Allmusic.com While not track by track, it shows you who played in the album as a whole.

Is someone trying to flesh out their illegally downloaded music library!?!
...If you find such a site, let me know. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

You can always pretend to be from a country where downloading music is not illegal.
