Did you like the so called New Romantic period of the early 80's music scene?

Duran Duran, Adam Ant,Ultravox, Visage, Spandau Ballet. Remember them and the music and the fashion? It was big in England and had some success here also. What did you think of that time and that music in that time period?

Loved it!

Duran were the kings of New Romantics!

It was the fusing of the Punk movement at the time with the Disco club scene!

They were the first ones to play videos in nightclubs...it all started in some small club I think in Manchester or something, wherever Duran came from.

The painter Nagel and his paintings of graphic ladies...the Rio cover girl, that was what they were trying to replicate in style...that geomteric glamour if you will, mixed in with Buffolo Gals, Punk, New Wave, CyberPunk...too original!

It came from the streets, from the people. You won't be seeing anything near that again in spirit and style...now it's all premade in companies...the ones who took over "cool".

Planet Earth video pretty much was the high point of that period.

Not especially. Duran Duran were cool but for the most part it was more about clothes and hair and less about music. I don't think there's anything particularly distinct about it as a musical genre. However, the whole Revolution take on the style was pretty fabulous. Those ruffles made Prince a superstar!

I loved the new romantice period of the early 80s and most of it came from the UK (from Spandu Ballet to The Human League). Its a shame that the music that sells over their these days is total shit and IMO the charts are rigged (how on earth can that Gareth Gates be No 1 with that horrible version of Elvis's Burning Love???)

I'm here, just been away for a bit. I wasn't necessarily knee deep into the New Romantic period, but I listened to alot of those artists. Grant it Duran Duran took advantage of the visual medium and made some classic videos, and they were into the clothes and makeup, but they also made some great music. If you heard anything beyond Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, and The Reflex, you knew what was up. Gosh, Human League and Culture Club bring it all back. How about Animotion? Or were they more of a dance band?

It's funny how any non-Prince discussion turns into a comparison to Prince and proteges, and sometimes it's unnecessary. There's always room for artists other than Prince.

I hope you are joking!!! All 80's music wasn't great but, gangsta rap sucks ass. I would rather see a good looking band with real music than a bunch of bums off the corner with their pants hanging off of there asses.

Human League and you know my friend does anybody remember KLAUS NOIMI? Damn,he damn well died a long time ago and he was a Fucking Character Vampire Urchin! My Aunt told me she saw him at the Ritz along with the Human League. You know the Ritz charged $2.oo sometimes she said on Tuesdays and she saw like everybody like U-2 and Split Enz"I Got You." Not everybody was $2.oo just sometimes. Heard they made a Mean frozen Tequila sunrise for $6.oo which she said was expensive since Rolling Rock was like maybe 3 or 4$. She told me $20 was like a big Deal. Coke was tres Chic and all. They did it on the tables at the Ritz or in PRivate Rooms. Also, like people were Fucking in the bathrooms all the Time...Always in the Ladies room where Sex was Gratiuitous. Still is...

Under the cherry moon is the ultimate new romantic film. I read this in an article somewhere. They listed the ultimate new romantic records, clothes, films etc. and the number one spot in the film cathegory was held by UTCM. The review read something like "a black and white movie about two gigolos on the french riviera. can it be more new romantic than that?"

I also like ABC.Anybody remember their 1982 hit "Poison Arrow"? Culture Club kicked ass,as well.

Naw I'm pretty damn serious! NWA and such was much refreshing compared to all these synth bands and pretty Brit boys playing fake-ass r&b.

Yes,ABC . Shoot that Poison Arrow Through My Heart! That's The Look Of Love...How about Men Without Hats? Safety Dance? The Vapors Turning Japanese . Wall Of Voodoo...I'm On A Mexican Radio...I'm On A Mexican oh,oh...Radio...Depeche Mode though is My Favorite or Ministry. Love that stuff but it's not New romantic. When will Al Jorgenson record again? Remember Tin Tin? Kiss Me? He was from I believe Duran Duran and wasn't John Rhodes the Best ? Elvis Costello Alison...My Aim is True!

Ministry are great. They are even better live. Have you heard their first album? That's a new romatic album. After that they started to do the music they do today. I think it's quite hard to get a hold of.

ABC were THE definitive 80s band and The Lexicon of Love the best 80s album. Remember the Gold Lame suit in The Look of Love video? Fantastic. I saw an 80s tour (probably 3 or 4 years ago now) - Culture Club headlined and were excellent, Human League were main support and were great but ABC totally blew them all off stage. Martin Fry where are you now?

No, they released another greatest hits package with a couple of new tracks, one of which made the U.K. top ten. I forget what it was called.

Yes,check this out about Ministry. Well,I saw them at the Ritz before they closed I expected them to do the stuff from the 1st album which yeah,is so different for them. Tame. They had a Net on stage and Al Jorgenson came out with this Witch hat and all in black. I wasn't expecting this. They Unleased their New Sound which is what they do now. It was Amazing! I just had to stand at the Side cause they were Blasting and the place rocked. It was Great! Love Ministries Sound. Even saw some Laser show with them and NIN and all Gothic stuff . It was Fantastic. I'm not sure it could have been while I was in Minneapolis many years ago. Those Laser shows are Great! Prince should do one...

I LOVE ABC! They were the shiznit back in the day. Well, I can't really say because I only dicovered them in 1995. But "Lexicon of Love" is my 2nd favorite album ever. First would be,obviously, "Purple Rain" (nothing can top that). But, hell yeah, man, ABC is the joint. We got any Spandau freaks up in here? Remember that funky joint they did, "I DON'T NEED THIS PRESSURE ON/I DON'T NEED THIS PRESSURE ON/I DON'T NEED THIS PRESSURE ON!!!"?
