Patti Labelle on current R&B Music You're a pioneer in R&B. How do you think the music industry has changed for black women in R&B versus today?
Patti: Versus today... these woman can come out and do anything, sell records and can't do a show. That's the difference! Back in the day we could sing the record, perform the song on stage and give you a great show. There aren't many Gladys Knights left today who are doing it and doing it well. The only one I can say and I know for a fact -- Beyonce kicks butt! This is pretty much EXACTLY WHAT I'VE ALWAYS SAID...

Man, I love Patti. She knows what she's talkin' about. Patti was around before MTV so she totally understands that just because someone has a cool music video doesn't make them a talented artist, and she's 100% right. Most of todays artists, R&B, Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop, etc. are images with a soundtrack...that's about it. If music videos disappeared tomorrow, half of these people wouldn't survive. Image is nothing, talent is everything, thank you Patti Prince Rogers Nelson

But she is also simplyfing this too, Patti needs to stretch what she calls RB she is missing alot mainly because Beyonce is the one you always see. But i have seen RB females in clubs that could teach Beyonce something about putting on a show, so Patti needs to dig a little deeper with her scope for RB females, its not just who you see on tv 24/7. my personal favorite of Patti's is "stir it up" from Beverly hills cop,
http://www.youtube.com/wa...JydnCBlDbQ what a cracking song, truly outstanding, with amazing production by a German of all people! Harold Faltermeyer who also did the whole synthesizer score. Patti should do some more shit like that, put some soul back into music, what a bloody good song

The question is How do you think the music industry has changed for black women in R&B versus today? Of course she knows there are a lot of talented people, but INSIDE the music industry they mostly suck... And Beyonce kicks butt [Edited 12/20/07 16:59pm]

Sssssstretch r&b..,isn't that the reason why r&b is in its current state.
I think artist and record labels have got away with stretching r&b for so long, that it's thought of as standard r&b. When someone comes out that can actually sing and play it's thought to be boring. Todays minstrel shows don't impress me, all this feet shuffling, gyrating on stage no singing talent we have is a bore. As Seen On TV. The ones that can "sing the record, perform the song on stage and give you a great show" are over looked. I agree they are out there.
For a women today it's hard. Looks have to be perfect to be marketable, weight is a huge issue. If your overweight and average to ugly, you need not apply. I like looking @ beautiful women, but when it comes to listening to music it's the least of my concern. [Edited 12/20/07 18:47pm]

Patti is absolutly correct. For large selling every Alicia, Christina, and Beyonce who actually have vocal talent, there are many more who wont sell records, ever be shown on MTV or BET because talent isn't what sells any more. If the artist isnt a half naked size 2 who can bounce and pop in a video, they are pushed aside, lucky if thier cd can sell gold. Also, the music industry today are not as interested in real talent as they are in a cookie cutter formula that will sell quickly, then drop the artist as soon as one cd flops. Mary J still has the whiff of Amateur Night about her. Alicia is an annoying fake who tries too hard. Badu is cool, but hardly a dynamic performer. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”
