Not sure where this goes, but here goes...lol OK, here's the deal, I just got Kylie's X in the mail..an import with extra
DVD features, and I can't get the DVD to work with my computer. Does that happen with imports sometimes (not compatible or something)? Or am I being an airhead and missing something simple? I can't hang right now, so hopefully I'll have an answer when I get back... [Edited 12/20/07 12:08pm]

DVDs are region coded so that they only play in certain countries (depending on which region they were created for). So, if you live in North America, you're in region 1 and only region 1 discs will work in your player. If you've got a region-free or all-region player it's not an issue but most people do not. The DVD will have one of these images on it:

US DVD's are Region 1-encoded. Most foreign DVD's are Region 2. It's incompatible with Region 1 players. You'll have to play it on a Region-free player.

And what's the purpose of that? They need to just make all the damn DVDs so they will play in every country and every DVD player. I think they like to make things these days just to be a neusance or force people to buy different equipment that is compatible. Hell, when we used to buy a record in the 1980s, it played in every record player ranging from a DJ turntable, a tabletop stereo, a child's Snoopy record player, or an old Thomas Edison record player (or whoever the hell invented them). It's to keep the home video market from digging too deep in the theatrical release market. But that's changing quickly in recent years. Home video releases are making more and more.

No. Mine isn't. well then, there's free software on the net that can remove the region code. Not sure if we're allowed to direct people to these sites, so I'll shut up for now.

Not all the drives can be altered. Many cannot (and mine is one of those...believe me, I've tried. ).

Thanks everybody...I learned something today. Apparently I don't have
a region-free player, and I'm certainly not going to try and alter things; however, I ended up throwing the disk into my TV DVD player, and it worked....so at least it wasn't a complete loss. Yeah!
