Santa Claus Is A Black Man

Out of all the Christmas songs out there, this one gets absolutely no radio airplay anymore. Maybe Clear Channel doesn't like the fact that Santa Claus could possibly be a black man. lol

The R&B stations used to play this song a lot every year when I was growing up. A lot of people thought it was Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five but it was really Akim and the Teddy Vann Production Company.

Anyone else familiar with this Christmas song?

Daddy.

Yes Akim.

Last night I saw Santa and you know what....

What Akim?

He looked a lot like you.

He was handsome.

I can dig it.

He was black.

Right on.

He had an afro. He was really outta sight.

Now I'm going to tell everyone that I saw Santa.

lol

I'll go for that. Just like Jesus was black. I'm serious about this, no joke whatsoever.

I think Santa, just like Jesus, could be an "eye of the beholder" thing, in which case there's as many images possible as there are people on Earth.

That's a really cool prospect, in my book!

Santa could be black, white, chinese, mexican, indian, or even bi racial. Considering that it is really the child's parents that are putting the presents under the tree on Christmas Eve night, Santa is the race of the child's parents. And for gay and lesbian couples who have children, Santa is gay. lol

I looked all over for the song for years on R&B Christmas compilations and finally found it two years ago on the John Waters CD. I sure didn't expect to find it there. lol

There's another song on that CD that trips me out. Something about Fatty Claus is full of shit. lol

Wendy Williams has been playing it on her show quite a bit. I heard it for the first time a couple of days ago. Very interesting track.

What? I know you're not no spring chicken youngster. Well, I've always assumed you were in your 30s. They didn't play this song in Texas back in the 70s and 80s?

U r correct in ur assumption. I am in my mid-30s (the same age when Prince changed his name to prince ).

They never played it here. It is probably a regional thing. I grew up in East Texas (which was extremely conservative in the 1970s and 80s) and didn't get to hear too many "black" songs. As a matter of fact, there were NO FM urban stations until 1995 in that area.

When I was growing up, we had an AM station (KZEY) that played Soul/Blues music and they signed off when the sun went down. I didn't hear new music until I went to the Dallas area (which was about twice a month). I would take my tape recorder and record about 4 to 6 hours of radio programming just to hear new music.

So, to answer your question, that one never made the playlist in our area.
