You're probably right. Pharrell's got one track(not song) in him that he's been adding whistles to and selling over and over. Everything else is someone's hit watered down.

I don't get the Meshell fans or their obsession. No offense to anyone.
I mean I totally understand if you dig her because you've been following her from the jump and you want to bang her. I get that and can see how you'd overlook certain things. If you don't fall into that category, what is so amazing about this chick's work? It sounds like every generic "modern jazz" instrumental I've ever heard with her "I got the flu" vocals over it. I mean I honestly tried to give her a chance because of all her stans who claim she's slept on and she's not embraced in a major way because of her hair or whatever marketing garbage it is they repeat. Meanwhile I always hear about this chick when her albums drop and in the early to mid 90s she got a little shine on her own and from established artists not to mention the association with Whoredonna. Is Whoredonna the reason people cosign this girl? [Edited 12/24/07 17:25pm]

Dance said: Harlepolis said: Can you explain that? What does Madonna have to do with Meshell? Maverick And that's pretty much where it ends. There are those Madonna fans out there who probably support anything that was released on Maverick in the same way that there are Prince fans that supported anything that was put out on Paisley Park, whether it had any Prince input or not... One of the reasons Meshell signed with Maverick instead of Paisley Park is because of the same reason Prince signed with WB back in the day. She wanted complete control over her albums. And for the most part during her ten year stay with the label, that was the case. There were no tracks that were produced by Madonna. Madonna appeared on zero of Meshell's albums/songs. Meshell is no longer on Maverick btw. And to answer your other question, the reason admirers are still hanging with Meshell after 15 years is because of the run she's had artistically. Look at Prince from his debut album through Lovesexy and how prolific he was. The risks he took artistically and the critical acclaim he received for his work during that time period. Then compare it to Meshell's body of work from 1993 through today and you'll understand why anyone with an ear, a heart and a brain, support this woman and encourage her to grow. It's cool that you don't get her music and there are folks out there who won't give her a chance because of her sexual orientation, her image, or that she doesn't give a fuck about being number one at the bank, etc. She treats her supporters with respect and unlike some artists actually encourages them to record her shows and put them up on sites like youtube. Unlike some artists, it's about the music for her and nothing else. You've obviously never seen her live, or you'd get it. And I'm not referring to some grainy youtube video shot by someone in the dark at one of her shows. I'm talking about going and seeing a band that has 2 bassists, 2 guitarists and a drummer that tops any drummer you have ever seen live (unless perhaps you were lucky enough to see the original line-up of Led Zeppelin.) She plays none of her old material at shows (unlike some artists who rely heavily on playing their old material). In fact, during her most recent tour, she played mostly new material that wasn't even recorded yet. So yeah, you could give her grief about things that have nothing to do with the music, or you could come with an open mind and be blown away by the gifts this woman has to offer. There are few artists out there today that are willing to constantly change and grow the way Meshell does, and challenge her audience while doing so. It was why so many supporters of Meshell became admirers of Prince in the 80s. Thankfully there was someone like Meshell to take that "artistic/creative/risk-taking" torch when Prince dropped it.

First listen I'm only feeling 8 of the 16 tracks Work That Just Fine Til The Morning Roses Work In Progress(Growing Pains) Talk To Me Smoke Come To Me(Peace) Come To Me(Peace) is like nothing she's ever did before, It reminds of an old 80's track that's escapimg me right now (I'm sure it was a white band) that this song reminds of.. (someone please tell me what song this sounds like) Tell me how you guys feel about this CD.. PS.. Inotice that Mary used a lot of the same producers named in contributing to Janet's upcoming CD The Dream,Ne-Yo,Stargate,Tricky Stewart... I hope they did a better job for Janet not feelin this one I was a bit let down. ---------------------------------

This is my third listen and I have to say that I like the album really much. Even though I think it's far from her best work, it is another consistent record in her camp. "Till The Morning" has gotten lots of play on Zune and CD player. I love that freakin' song and the Neptunes production has that fresh 80's R&B-chic to it that I like. Check me out and add me on:

Mary J. Blige’s Geffen release, Growing Pains, will debut at #2, with an impressive 640k in sales.
I guess this whole releasing her albums a week for Xmas is paying off, I bet she will release her next CD in December 2010

I guess this whole releasing her albums a week for Xmas is paying off, I bet she will release her next CD in December 2010 That's a valid point because that's part of the reason why her last album, The Breakthrough was a runaway success... Even though I still feel that her latest album won't match the commercial sales of her last release, I think she has a hit on her hands with this album. Who knows? Check me out and add me on:
