I loved the man (well, I still do), but I do not listen to his (post MOI) output too often anymore. I hope the "zappa feeling" comes back one day.
Anyway, the (original) MOI is still among my faves (Freak Out, Abs. Free, We are.., Uncle Meat, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Weasels...). I prefer this albums very much over his later work Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe, Roxy, and so on.
Youtube serves up a lot Zappa, lot of gems there. If youtube had been around 7, 8 years ago, I would have been in heaven.

has anybody heard the Zappa Wazoo record thats out now? Live performance(s) with the Grand Wazoo stuff. I have heard very positive things about it.

When I put on post MOI Zappa, its Jazz From Hell, You Are What You Is and Joe's Garage... and sometimes Broadway The Hardway.

There's an old Mike Douglas clip where Douglad is treating Zappa pretty bad. People forget, the guy was classically trained, could write sheet music, loved classical music, hated cookie cutter pop and rock and railed against it, supported free speech when democrats became the thought police. Zappa was our friend.

I would recommend getting zappa on vinyl. The cds have weird reverb and added stuff.

Roxy sounds amazing on vinyl. MUTANT guitar sounds; just as zappa wanted. BRILLIANT!

Pretty good. The backing vocals don't compare to those on the record, but it's somethin' different and I respect that. The live solo killed. Zappa could pick a guitar.

Yeah, i submerged myself into Zappa's work for about three years and still never heard everything this man has created. People talk about Prince being prolific but musically Zappa was eons passed what P was doing back then and could never ever (that's right folks, you read it right) never ever compare to Zappa as a writer. The only thing P has on Zappa is the Funk and that's about it besides the whole mystery man, Svengali thing that he does so well....anyways, i hope that "Zappa Feeling" returns to me too. : )

Having just acquired and watched the excellent 'Classic Albums: 'Apostrophe'/'Overnite Sensation' DVD, I sense I am entering a new phase of Zappa listening. His music is amazing in some any ways. For me, his music is head and shoulders above all the '60-'70s jazz-rock/progressive stuff that it may superficially sound like at times, and he is my favourate lead guitarist alongside Hendrix.

As a composer, he covers so much ground, with influences ranging from Varese to Johnny Guitar Watson, Duke Ellington to Spike Jones, but you always know Frank when you hear him.

I am constantly amazed by the organisational skills the man must have possessed in order to compose, arrange, record and perform live such complex, unique music, while am also puzzled as to why his estate are releasing his apparently large vault of unreleased material in such occassional and imo sometimes unsatisfactory quantities and ways. His musical mastery needs to be even better known than it is imo.

His barbed wit and social/ political satire is much missed in these recent years.

I think the zappa family trust is not releasing dozens of albums becuase of the money involved. These would have to be mastered; pressed etc which costs alot of money if it's a box set.
