see, this is kind of an over the top complaint to me, and i consider myself the emily post of concert etiquette. lol

i think it's cute when someone, especially a kid or an older person, wears a t-shirt of the band who's playing. it's just kinda charming to see their excitement and enthusiasm. same with people who put on their merch table t-shirts as soon as they buy em. is it a breathtakingly original fashion statement? no, it is not. but it's cute to see people that jazzed to be at a show. it doesn't bother me at all. shrug

OMG, I wouldn't be caught dead at a show wearing a t-shirt of the band playing. I always considered that a major faux pas. Plus, I'm not gonna waste good advertising space on my chest for a band everyone else at the show is already into.

oh my. disbelief

i guess i've been lucky. i've never had any incidents with chronic pukers at any show i've attended.

but yeah, i agree with you: general admission shows are a supreme test of patience, as these shows tend to bring out the brutal thoughtless butthole in everyone. these days i either have to REALLY want to see the show, or else not care at all who i'm seeing but just go because someone offered me a free ticket and there's nothing else to do. in which case, gimme a beer and let me stand in the back of the house and i'm good to go. shrug

That's the spot! highfive

it warms my cold dark heart to see folks attempting to raise consciousness regarding concert etiquette. it's a shame that the buttholes who are the guiltiest offenders would never ever look at these sites. sigh

MEANWHILE

here's a rule:

if you arrive at a concert late, you have no entitlement to shove your way to the front of the audience.

NONE.

if it's so important that i gaze at the back of your head instead of the band i paid to see, then YOU can show up early for the show and protect a good space for an hour or two.

i once saw a kid get picked up and body surfed to the back of a crowd at a pixies show for trying this crap.

DON'T DO IT no no no!

Sorry Anx! You know I love you but BULLSHIT!!! I arrived late at a Prince concert because of a freaking accident on the highway that had nothing to do with me but I was held up...bitching and trying my hardest to get around it for like 50 minutes and I showed up late! I got in the arena just as Prince was taking the stage...sure there were folks getting all pissy because they had to gaze at the back of my head as I was excusing my way to my seat but for FUCKS SAKE...shouldn't they have been more pissed that Prince was just THEN getting his happy ass on stage almost an hour behind schedule??? hmph!

i don't understand. was it reserved seating? if so, then good for you. if you show up late and you have good seats reserved, it's not the same as showing up late at a general admission show and assuming there's a place for you wherever you choose. nothing burns my ass like when i get to a GA show an hour or two early to get a good spot, then three songs into the show some snotnose comes pushing around me and stands right the hell in front of me. and it's always someone who's 8 feet tall and if i'm SUPER lucky he brought his girlfriend and they're more interested in making out directly in front of me than watching the show. barf

at least if they're standing still, the people behind them know how to situate themselves and crane their necks to get a better view. you want him to be constantly shifting and bobbing around, blocking your vision as soon as you get him out of your view of the stage?

At the Atlantic City show in '98, I paid $250. for the tix!!! omfg ($500- I bought my Mom's, too)
So, naturally (4th row center), I wanted to shake my @$$... These damn old high-rollers in bad toupees and furs who were comped tix wanted to sit and watch behind me. Security came over and tried to make me sit down. She told me they were "important people". confused
After about 3 songs worth of arguing, they got up and left! hmph!

Please stop filming the show with your phone. It is blocking my view and nobody wants to see your crappy low res clips when you upload them onto YouTube.

If you must drink, do it in moderation. If you can't handle your beer, order a coke. The aftershow I attended at Indigo was ruined by drunken idiots who spent most of the night attempting to grope every female within reach. They were at a Prince aftershow fer christssake yet completely ignored the performance just to get wasted and say "I was there" to their friends.

yeah the whole drinking aspect i dont get at shows, not that i dont drink but theres a time for it and not for it, if i paid meony to see an artist i want to see the artist not get up every minute for a drink or to go to the bathroom, i never realized how dumb people can be, and the whole getting up during the "new song" bullshit has to stop, sorry that you dont know the new album, but i fucking do and i wanna hear Elton John do a new song more than i wanna hear "Your song" for the 400th time, you know its cool if you dont know the song but sit the fuck down why do i have to move caused you stopped buying his albums.

And oh yes the whole cell phone filming generation, i understand that everyone has a phone but why is it a law that you have to have it with you, shit people existed for decades without it, and 99.9% dont need the shit with them, its not like they are gonna get called into surgery last minute. Leave it home, take a fucking risk for one night, or if you drove, leave it in the car. I performed in a play this summer and at the beginning i went out and made an announcement to turn off the cell phones during the show, and i said simply, "that if your phone goes off during this show, and no one in your family hasnt been murdered and you arent a doctor on call, then im beating you to death with the phone".

"We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Sometimes I wonder why some people even GO to shows. It's not like they're there to listen or anything. I don't have a problem with most of the stuff on that list unless it's someone I REALLY want to hear, but I've been lucky so far. Still, people are so thoughtless most of the time. What the hell happened to listening to music? Why do we have to be drunk, talking on the phone, talking to friends, etc. while the concert it going on?

Oh and before I get folks on my back... I'm not against people going for a drink, I like a good session myself. I just think that getting totally wasted at a gig is a waste of money as you're really not gonna appreciate the gig if you are forever to-ing and fro-ing.
It reminds me of a concert I went to years ago with a friend. He decided to drinks a lot of beer and smoke a lot of weed before the gig. By the time the band came on stage he was fast asleep and slept throughout the whole show, totally wasting his money on a ticket imo. Anyway, at the end I woke my friend up as we had to leave. As he awoke he told me what an amazing gig it was and the following week was telling anyone interested how great it was and that he was there!!!

I think Mike Joyce of The Smiths is certainly one of the main offenders when I comes to band members wearing their own t-shirts, barely a photo shoot went by without him wearing one of his own band's shirts.
Give him his due though, he is a nice fella and can now be heard on Sunday afternoons on my local radio station playing some great tunes http://www.revolutiononline.co.uk/

My only pet peeve is people booing support acts. I know it's fun if the support act really does suck and everyone in the audience knows it. But if it's a decent support act and you're booing for the sake of it, that's not cool.

Also, yelling "Free Bird". I thought that shit was done with but I heard some dickhead yell it out at a recent concert.

i think the only time it's okay to boo a band is when the band is being rude to the audience first.

Yes, I think so too!

If the band was bad, but you could see they were trying their hardest and gave their all, you shouldn't boo!
