it warms my cold dark heart to see folks attempting to raise consciousness regarding concert etiquette. it's a shame that the buttholes who are the guiltiest offenders would never ever look at these sites. sigh

MEANWHILE

here's a rule:

if you arrive at a concert late, you have no entitlement to shove your way to the front of the audience.

NONE.

if it's so important that i gaze at the back of your head instead of the band i paid to see, then YOU can show up early for the show and protect a good space for an hour or two.

i once saw a kid get picked up and body surfed to the back of a crowd at a pixies show for trying this crap.

DON'T DO IT no no no!

remember kids!

be afraid of the mosh pits, i got pushed into once at gwar/municipal waste concert(a thrash metal band)..and almost died.

also be aware kids to bring extra clothes to a gwar concert.
i got semen, blood, and pus thrown at me from the stage( mind you it was fake)

remember kids gwar rules for a concert, but in actually there music is not that good..real good show, like alice cooper and dadaism with lsd.

Quite a few of these should be posted at Prince concerts! lurking

Oh!
Screaming is REEEEEALLY irritating! Please don't do it for the entire concert!
Also, I didn't pay the outrageous ticket price to hear U & your friend do the "drunk" version of every song.
no no no!

Nice topic. I had a few at the Ween show recently.

Don't sing every song in the person's ear in front of you

Don't sing every guitar line and keyboard line, we know the songs too

Don't go to an ANi Difranco show and yell I love you for 2 hrs straight

Don't go to a Prince show and scream like a banshee and every quiet moment

Don't spend half the time packing bowls (weed) instead of listening to the music, you are just their for the scene stay in the parking lot. You annoy the fans who actually care what song is playing.

Don't wear the T shirt of the band you see, it's just in poor taste even if its a vintage 1977 Police t shirt from their 1st cbgb's gig.... you still look like you are trying to hard.
Music is the best...

see, this is kind of an over the top complaint to me, and i consider myself the emily post of concert etiquette. lol

i think it's cute when someone, especially a kid or an older person, wears a t-shirt of the band who's playing. it's just kinda charming to see their excitement and enthusiasm. same with people who put on their merch table t-shirts as soon as they buy em. is it a breathtakingly original fashion statement? no, it is not. but it's cute to see people that jazzed to be at a show. it doesn't bother me at all. shrug

I don't know... I kind of see it as 'corny'. (I like to get dressed to show my individual style sexy at a show.) If you buy a shirt and wear it afterwards to show that you went to the show that's one thing, but at the show... disbelief
But I see your tribute point. That's the thing about here- we all have different opinions. No disrespect. cool

Well basically im pretty much done with General Admission shows for the same reason that theres always going to be the "asshole" who shows up 15 minutes before the show and is surprised by the line, and then he will try to push through during the show, did this crap too many times at Prince shows, and the way he is going i doubt he is gonna be doing any GA shows in the near future. Lately especially this year ive been seeing shows at the Beacon alot and a couple at BB kings some were GA but most were seated shows special for the artist playing. But i think my biggest thing with concerts is the whole selling of alcohol at events, this would go for sporting events too, though i know it will never happen, that shit should be banned, go get drunk after the show. One of the main reasons i hate that is everytime i see an artist that has been around and they have a new record, everytime they say "this is a new one" and they start playing a new song, JOE DICKHEAD decides he's gonna get up and go get another drink, so just because this guy doesnt know the artist past 1980 i have to keep getting up and down.

Precisely. Music and being an admirer of an artist is about fun. Now, when its no longer fun then, its time to drop the artist.

i WILL say this: it might be edging on bad concert etiquette when THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND come out onstage wearing their own t-shirts, especially if they're the ones available at the merch table. UBER TACKY. lol

sextonseven and I had this discussion within some other thread not too long ago.
At this point, i'd have to agree with lastdecember about avoiding GA shows.
It's gotta be someone I really, really, really want to see.

Combine the pushing to the front after the fact while carrying an a$$load of alcohol over their heads (which ends up getting spilled on everyone in the vicinity) and the obligatory banshee screaching makes for the deadliest of gaffs.

Oh yeah, forgot one...

Think i'm exaggerating?
This happened in the V.I.P. section during one of Prince's Rio gigs.
And what does he do after this barftastic performance?
Why, he starts drinking again, of course. disbelief

oh my. disbelief

i guess i've been lucky. i've never had any incidents with chronic pukers at any show i've attended.

but yeah, i agree with you: general admission shows are a supreme test of patience, as these shows tend to bring out the brutal thoughtless butthole in everyone. these days i either have to REALLY want to see the show, or else not care at all who i'm seeing but just go because someone offered me a free ticket and there's nothing else to do. in which case, gimme a beer and let me stand in the back of the house and i'm good to go. shrug

OMG, I wouldn't be caught dead at a show wearing a t-shirt of the band playing. I always considered that a major faux pas. Plus, I'm not gonna waste good advertising space on my chest for a band everyone else at the show is already into.

Ha, the last time this happened to me was actually at an assigned seating show. My friend and I went to see Nine Inch Nails/Bauhaus/Peaches at Jones Beach last year and the guy in the seat next to my friend had smoked too much doobage and yakked between his legs halfway through Trent's set. He kept his head between his knees for the rest of the night, semi-passed out. Dumbass. lol But my friend felt sorry for him; he looked very young.

Rule #7: Women are only allowed to sit on guys' shoulders if they are gonna flash everyone.

Rule #6: I admit I did this once (or twice redface ) at the last Goldfrapp show, but only because a few friends were arriving separately and I wanted to let them know where I was in regard to the stage.
