Discussion: "MORPHINE"

So I have been listening to this song... wow... I love it.

What do other orgers think of this song?

What a change from songs like "Rock With You" and "Man In The Mirror"!

when I first heard it when my friend got it before me and was trying to surprise me, I thought it was marilyn manson when I heard the hook in the beginning and started laughing, until I was told it was mj. Once I got through the whole thing, I liked it, though it sounded like an 80's song more than a 90's song. As much as I love the "new tracks" on BOTDF, I don't understand fans who call that stuff ahead of it's time and creative. The concepts were definitely creative, but the music sounded way too outdated compared to the r&b sound of 1997. As much as I'm an mj fan, I never list BOTDF as one of the best of 1997.

I love the piano part. "Relax, this won´t hurt you..."

One of the reasons he's my fave.

I think 90s was MJs best decade. I wish he didnt let that über cool side of him die with Invincible.

I love it!! I first heard it in the almost empty Olympiastadion in Munich, a month before it's release, shortly before Michael came... it was awesome!

Same here. Invincible had a few good moments, but all and all, he was trying too hard to be POPULAR.

BOTDF and HIStory (Disc 2) will always be my favorite, because it reflected Michael's true feelings, all and all, on just about every topic.

As for "Morphine" it is haunting considering Michael's own bouts with addiction. I try to avoid it, because it depresses me. That being said, when I have heard it, I love it. I love it when he sings/raps the word, "bitch." It sounds so angry and just powerful.

As far as BOTDF goes, I prefer the title track, "Superfly Sister" and "Ghosts/Is It Scary" best of all.

the song's a mess...stop enabling mj...it's just going to lead to more crappy music. lol

Well, when you begin to talk rubbish I will roll my eyes on you! rolleyes
Again, it sounds nothing like his other songs, let alone 5 other songs!
And I don't hear a mess.... actually it's a straight forward song with a unexpected bridge! Messes sound different! That JLo song, which samples the Jackson 5... that's an example for a mess and a example for a song which sounds like a couple of songs meshed together... but certainly not Morphine!

Dude, if you don't hear parts of Come Together, Scream, This Time Around anda couple tunes of Dangerous then I can't help you.

and how you gonna debate something that's subjective in the first place? IMHO the song is a hot mess...

and just because halfway though he decides to add a slow tempo song does not make it any more interesting to my ears.

For the record, my verdict still stands: HOT MESS

Yeah, it's certainly subjective that you're hearing things! Okay, I kinda give you Come together... although farfetched... but Scream, This time around and a couple of Dangerous songs?? What? Heal the world and Keep the faith?? rolleyes

IMHO I think it's an okay song, but not anything close to his best work. I don't even think it's the best song on BOTDF.

A single YouTube play is not going to do such an intricate song justice. You gotta hear it properly through real speakers.

Took me a while to get it when I first bought the album, but now I think it' damn good.

I suppose he could have called the song "Morphine... With A Side Of Demerol" but it doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Yes! "Superfly Sister" is the best song on there. It is a very underated MJ song. It's most def one of my all time favorite MJ tracks. Very funky.

Cool!

It was a month before the second leg of the HIStory tour started in '97 and there was an inpromptu press conference... I heard about it, like 2 days before! Michael was to be there and to receive a Munich plaque and a trikot from the Munich Soccer team, who normally plays in that stadium, and about 300 Fans were allowed into the stadium! Before he went on, they played the five new songs from the BOTDF album... it was a great way to hear them for the first time!
